Familyshul.org בס"ד JUNE-JULY 2 0 1 5 SIVAN/TAMMUZ/AV 5 7 7 5 BETH ISRAEL SYNAGOGUE בס" ד Shalom Aleichem Owners and Friends! Our Lag B’Omer BBQ/PI@BI/Shabbaton was fabu- lous - it was great to have the opportunity to thank MLA David Xiao for all his years of service to our community and to congratulate and welcome our new MLA Lorne Dach. This year’s Zabludowski scholar-in-residence, Rabbi Burg was a real winner. We want to take this opportunity to thank Mike & Jodi for the last number of years of your major sponsorship of the Shabbaton. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end and we are now looking for a new major sponsor going forward. This Shabbaton is very important to our adult education portfolio – we do two big Shabbatons a year, one combined with the Kollel and one with a more Modern Orthodox flavour. If anyone wants more information, please feel free to contact us. We then held a huge community-wide Yom Yerushalayim event. It was probably the first time in the history of Edmonton that we had participation across the spectrum. There were only a couple of organizations that we didn’t get to in time;; we hope next year will incorporate everyone! It was a great turnout and everyone had a ton of fun! As always, our Shavuos all-nighter was a massive success. Thank you to Dave & Mike for the pasta dinner and midnight BBQ and thank you to Amir and Forrest for your Technology in Halacha pieces. And thank you again to the rabbis and rebbetzins for your shiurim and for being an ongoing integral part of our adult ed. Our next major shul event is the Gala Movie night honouring Mitch Klimove on Sunday. PLEASE PLEASE do your best to be there and bring your friends from beyond the congregation and community. This event is our big fundraiser for the year and it is integral for the ongoing funding of all our programs, but particularly our youth and young adult departments. Please call Luba ASAP for tickets. On a final note, we share the following news with you with mixed feelings. Rabbi Will and Rebbetzin Sarah Yeamans will be concluding their tenure with us this summer. They have found a position as the senior rabbi and rebbetzin at a shul in Philadelphia. We say mixed feelings, because on the one hand it is a real loss to our shul and community. But on the other hand, we take great pride in their achievements and their ability to transition from the position of assistant rabbi in our congregation to a senior position. It is a real tribute to our community and the level of activity and participation we have here. This coming Shabbos (6th June), the Yeamans had originally booked the Kiddush in honour of their new baby girl. With their permission, we are combining it with a thank you Kiddush in their honour. If anyone would like to take part and contribute any amount, please call Luba. Wishing you all a restful and enjoyable summer and well over the fasts of Tamuz and Av, Rabbi & Rabbanit Friedman Thank you to all for your kind wishes of sympathy on the loss of our dear brother Eli Adler z”l Bernie & Miriam Adler Thank you to all for your cards and donations in memory of our mother Betty Lazanik z”l The Lazanik family Thank you to all the people who have “been there” for myself and my wife in the aftermath of both of our recent health challenges. Your kind words, thoughts and prayers helped us through the tough times. Robert (Dov) Wood and Sherrie (Shira) Banks BETH ISRAEL SYNAGOGUE ~ www.familyshul.or g 1 The President Presents Dear fellow congregants. As many of you may know, we have recently experienced a wonderful and inspiring weekend. Lag B’ Omer was celebrated along with PI @ BI as well as the Edith and Lou Zabludowski sponsored Shabbaton. We were honored to both host and listen to Rabbi Burg, Eastern director of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre. Besides his talks to the congregation, he also held a discussion with the Board, which we really appreciated. Gabbai’s Gab .Gabbai’s Gab Although it may be months away, it is necessary for the Ritual Committee to plan now for services for Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur. The next day to mark in your calendars is Sunday 7 June @ 6.45pm, our movie night. We will be showing the movie “ The Prime Minis- ters” based on the book authored by Yehuda Avner. Besides being a movie well worth seeing, we are also honoring long-term member and BI friend Mitch Klimove. The movie will be screened at the Garneau theatre on 109 street and 87 ave followed by a dessert reception. Please make every effort to attend, it promises to be a wonderful evening and also a much needed fund raiser for our Shul. Please contact the Shul office or Metro theatres to purchase tickets and also consider a sponsorship. We are asking members who are requesting a specific honour to complete the enclosed request form and return it to the office. It will then be forwarded to the Gabbai for review by the Ritual Committee. We have set the date for our AGM. This year it will be held on Wednesday evening 10 June at 7.00pm. We are proposing a revision to the constitution, please try to attend. Your input is always valuable. As part of ongoing efforts to control costs, the bulletin will now be distributed by email. Those members who do not have email access will still receive a mailed copy. Statements will also be delivered by email. The Ritual Committee will review the requests and make the final decision regarding honours. It would also be helpful if members who are declining an honour would either return the form or notify the office. Members who will accept whatever honour is assigned do not need to send the form but may do so if they wish. Lewis Wasel One of the not so pleasant duties of being President is to remind members of their fiscal responsibility to the Shul. We still have significant amounts of money owing to us for unpaid membership, pledges and other accounts; some dating back a couple of years. We really would appreciate if all debts can be paid. Luba is calling members but we also need your help. No-one will be denied membership based on financial reasons; but if this is the case, please contact Luba in the office so arrangements suitable to all can be made. We promise strict confidentiality. Based on the above, the board has approved a motion that members who are in arrears with respect to monies owed and have not made plans to correct this either in full or set up a payment plan, will not be considered for an honor/aliyah in the upcoming High Holidays. Chag Sameach to you all. Stan Kitay BETH ISRAEL SYNAGOGUE ~ www.familyshul.or g 2 Director’s Diary Hi All, A decision was finally made – as very few came back to me to let us know about the mailing of bulletins – we have as you can see emailed the bulletin. Of course to those of you that do not have a computer we will still mail it out. If for any reason you come across some one that did not receive a copy please ask them to call the office. Well Lag B’Omar/Zabludowski Shabbaton/P.I. B.I. is over and what a wonderful success it was – I’m sorry that many of you could not attend, hopefully next time! By the time you read this Shavuot will also be over – such activity we are always busy with something. Rabbanit Batya arranged the Yom Yerushalayim celebration. All the various charities took part starting at T.T. with a walk to B.I. Well they arrived in droves – looking for food and drinks. What a marvellous gathering of children, adults young and old. All the shuls took part – I was so proud that our Rabbanit from Beth Israel, truly a Family Shul, took the initiative to organise such an event. Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who came to help make the salads and hotdogs – Dave Marcus together with your team worked so hard Todah Rabah! – As for the servers Thank you Thank you. What do they say “More hands make light work” Please take a look at the wonderful flyer that Tsiporah Reboh designed asking for helpers in different parts of our shul- Guys, Gals, Ladies, Gentleman, we are doing a great job, but we need to to spread the help around and get more ideas from you – so please come forward and let us know where you fit in – if we’ve left anything off let us know and what more we can do and where you can help. The office is running smoothly, tribute cards are going out at a regular rate. Please use us, we have cards for all occasions, donations start at $10 a card . We have had some wonderful kiddushes the last few weeks, some catered by us some by caterers, and you coming to enjoy have no idea what goes on in the inside to make each Kiddush perfect for you. Yuri works hard to get the tables done as it has to be chairs are moved from one room to the other tablecloths to the laundry, tablecloths back from the laundry, is there enough of everything, ordering etc etc This is what goes on every week Kitchens have to be cleaned so even if there is another caterer we appreciate it when someone comes along and donates an extra amount of money to say Todah Rabah! I would like to say Todah Rabah to Dr. Sam & Eva Weiss for making such a donation. Mazel Tov to Dr. Weiss on your 2nd Bar Mitzvah coming up! We are sending the statements out by email as well – Please, please, as I have asked in each of my letters, try and pay us on receipt of your statement or at least make some sort of arrangement with me with regard to the payment thereof. We have commitments to meet each month , when we have functions, we have to buy and pay for things in advance and it makes our cash flow rather difficult in the office when payment of statements are held back. So please help us to keep everything running smoothly – As they say in the classics “I’m only a phone call away”. We will never turn anyone away for financial reasons – but at least come forward and speak to us – all discussion are absolutely confidential. Thank you to Joel Allen and a group of doctors who got together to raise the money, and now we have a defibrillator in the office which will soon be mounted on the wall in the hall way. A big “Thank You “ to Benaron Gleiberman for setting us up with new computers and a server which is just about up and running within the next day or two, all this donated by Benaron, Norman Wasel, and several anonymous donors. What would we do without such wonderful people. Hope you bought tickets to the movie night on Sunday June 7 th we are honouring Mitch Klimove...Please phone the office now!!! Luba. YIZKOR MEMORIAL BOOK DEADLINE IS July 31, 2015 A new addition of the 5776-2015/2016 Yizkor Memorial Book, will be presented at Yom Kipper services this year. The book will also be used for the remainder of the year during Succot, Pesach and Shavuot services. Inscribing loved one’s names in the book is a way of honoring our dearly departed relatives, friends, and members of our congregation. Yizkor is the time when we remember those who are no longer with us by pledging charity to honor their memory and elevate their souls. This book will include the names of loved ones being memorialized, and as in previous years, it will contain prayers and other materials related to Yizkor. Please return the Yizkor memorial book form enclosed to the Beth Israel office by July 31, 2015. We are looking for volunteers to help with the mitzvah of putting together this book.
