Olympus, the Rapsani Grand Reserve starts with voluptuous aromas of blackberry, spice box and liquorice, offering fullbodied flavors of black fruit and olive on the palate. The fruit is well balanced by a spice and mineral backbone. A very good red for lamb, dried meats or stews. 91 Tsantali 2010 Rapsani Reserve Designation: Reserve Varietal: Xinomavro, Krassato, and Stavroto Appellation: Rapsani Winery: Tsantali This appealing red starts with a nose bursting with exotic tobacco, cocoa and red berries, followed by a juicy palate of black fruit, cocoa and sweet smoke. The oak is obvious here, offering vanilla and spicy notes, but the round fruit character keeps the wine in check. The wine is smooth from eight months in new French oak, though the oak could not fully tame such ripe, heavy tannins. Can be drunk over the next decade. Refreshing and spicy, it has weight but is extremely food friendly. Pair with grilled fish, salads. 86 Tsantali 2011 Metoxi Chromitsa X White Designation: Metoxi Chromitsa X Single Vineyard Varietal: Assyrtiko, Athiri, and Sauvignon Blanc Appellation: Agioritikos Winery: Tsantali Candied lemon and lush tropical fruits start this Assyrtiko, Athiri blend from an established producer in northern Greece. Fresh, fun and slightly sweet on the palate, the wine has a softer, more feminine touch than many Greek whites. Crisp acidity and a touch of richness give the wine both complexity and a food-friendly edge. Tsantali 2009 Abaton Red Designation: Agioritiko Abaton Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon and Limnio Appellation: Halkidiki Winery: Tsantali This is an exuberant but elegant Agiorgitiko, with its big berry nose and pretty, rounded fruit flavors. It’s mild overall, making it suitable for pairing with diverse dishes, but has a solid structure and spice that gives it extra character. A balanced but distinctive red. SANTORINI 89 Hatziyiannis Santorini 2013 Assyrtiko Designation: Hatziyiannis Varietal: Assyrtiko Appellation: Santorini Winery: Santo Wines This is a luscious wine but has an elegant balance, thanks to the mineral undercurrent so typical in Greek wines. On the nose, toast, vanilla and smoke lead, while flavors of apple, peach and flower follow. Soft and generous in style, but finishes clean. 89 Hatziyiannis Santorini 2011 Varietal: Assyrtiko Appellation: Santorini Winery: Hatziyiannis A trio of elegant whites comprises this blend from the island of Santorini, and each lends a unique facet that is authentically Greek. On the nose, clean, friendly citrus flavors reign, with an appealing touch of sweet fruit, minerals and spice adding dimension. On the palate, the wine offers fresh but rounded flavors that linger but leave it refreshed. Overall, an intriguing, food-friendly sip. 88 Spyros Hatziyiannis 2010 White (Cyclades) Varietal: Assyrtiko Appellation: Cyclades Winery: Spyros Hatziyiannis Anise, pear and mineral aromas and flavors imbue this wine with a fine degree of complexity. It’s also richer than most of the whites from Santorini, yet it still retains a refreshing bite on its tart, minerally finish. The nose starts with vibrant cassis, cherry and plum aromas, followed by flavors of blackcurrant, pepper, cherry and cinnamon that are rounded and layered. The wine ends with a lively mineral spin. 88 Papaioannou 2013 St. Elias Designation: St. Elias Varietal: Assyrtiko Appellation: Corinth Winery: Papaioannou Elegant and fresh, with a touch of light lemon rind and lime zest. Lots of balance and character. Lemon preserve and melon aromas are followed by peach and tropical fruit flavors, all balanced with telltale Greek acidity. Balanced and well made, and a good pairing with fruit, salads and seafood. 88 Papaioannou 2004 Terroir “St. George” Designation: Terroir Varietal: Agiorgitiko, St. George Appellation: Nemea Winery: Papaioannou Savory, smoked meat and clove aromas give this lively Agiorgitiko soul. Flavors of leather, smoke, spice and red berry are balanced and clean. A masculine pour that will pair well with dried meats, steak and burgers. 88 Papaioannou 2006 “Old Vines” Designation: Old Vines Single Vineyard Varietal: Agiorgitiko Appellation: Nemea Winery: Papaioannou Elegant, but with some muscle .This single-vineyard Agiorgitiko has an earthy olive nose and smooth, integrated flavors of red berry, herbs and spice. Soft but structured tannins and a spin of spice on the finish recommend it for heartier dishes, but it’s good enough to savor on its own.. Fresh and friendly but substantive, this wine can age. 87 Papaioannou 2013 Saint George Designation: Saint George Varietal: Agiorgitiko Appellation: Peloponnese Winery: Papaioannou Tart cherry and pepper aromas are followed by an earthy, masculine combination of flavors in this wine. Toasted nut, aged leather and spice box flavors speak to its native terroir. An affordable wine with good Greek character. NICO LAZARIDI 88 Nico Lazaridi 2012 Magic Mountain White Designation: Magic Mountain Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc Appellation: Drama Winery: Nico Lazaridi Nice Greek Sauvignon showing melon, apple and peach aromas more than piquant citrus. Offers fine balance, with the acidity propping up apple, honeydew and peach flavors. Fairly chewy and round, with a finish that’s slightly warm but satisfying. Nico Lazaridi 2012 Lion d'Or Red Designation: Lion d'Or Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon Appellation: Greece Winery: Nico Lazaridi The nose starts a bit funky and earthy, but clears to reveal scents of blueberry pie and grape jelly. Full in the mouth, it has a soft, smooth feel with acidity to give it a lift. The blueberry compote flavors are a bit hidden by heavy tannins, but drink this with a steak or rack of lamb and watch the tannins melt away. Nico Lazaridi 2001 Moushk Muscat d'Alexandrie Designation: Moushk Varietal: Muscat d'Alexandrie Appellation: Drama Winery: Nico Lazaridi Nico Lazaridi 2010 Merlot Varietal: Merlot Appellation: Drama Winery: Nico Lazaridi An earthy but slightly sweet nose leads into flavors of meat, clove and dark fruit in this beautifully colored, well-balanced Merlot. The structure is good and the finish lingers with lush fruit. 91 Hatzimichalis 2008 Kapnias Designation: Kapnias Vineyard Varietal: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Appellation: Atalanti Valley Winery: Hatzimichalis Aromas of red fruit, vanilla and cigarbox start this Cabernet Sauvignon from Greece. Its flavors are rich but balanced—cinnamon, cedar, cherry and savory spice—and the wine finishes clean and dry. Elegant with ageable potential. 89 Karipidis 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon Appellation: Thessalikos, Greece Winery: Karipidis You could easily get lost in this wine’s bouquet: plenty of new, spicy oak, scents of plum and blackberry pie, later picking up anise and coffee. On the palate, a streak of acidity is followed by soft, dry tannins, making way for more blackberry and anise. This wine has a lot of depth, and the firm tannins and solid acidity imply this could last for at least a decade, but it’s very enjoyable now. Robola Cooperative of Cephalonia 2013 Varietal: Robola Appellation: Cephalonia Winery: Robola Cooperative of Cephalonia Faint scents of rainwater and rock dust mark the nose, while the palate is assertively tart and lemony.
