Jewelry and Beading Art
$600 Awards Offered
Div# 4304
Sponsor: 1 Stop Bead Shop
Division Notes:




All items must be ready for display. Help us make your pieces look their best! Try to include a small jewelry display
piece or fixture for best possible display and viewing (name on bottom).
Mounted is good, but please do not tie as makes it difficult when judging.
Contestant must choose the category that best describes the piece of jewelry being judged.
The judge reserves the right to move an entry to a more appropriate category if entry is entered into a class that does not
apply.
Judging Guidelines:


Class 1: Judging will be on the quality of the beads themselves, not on the composition of a finished jewelry piece.
Beads may be finished into jewelry or mounted for display; however, if contestant’s goal is to have the beads judged on
the finished jewelry piece then it must be entered into the appropriate finished jewelry category.
Class 6: Contestant should identify what type of metalsmithing was used in the piece.

Ship models will be judged on a point system based upon historical accuracy, construction and "WOW" appeal.
Each model is automatically awarded 100 points and errors in accuracy, construction, finish and appeal will be deducted.
A three person team will evaluate each model independently, with the three judges points combined and averaged to
determine the average point level for each model.
Models entered will not be judged against each other.
Categories for Judging:




Historical Account Paper: Each model must have an historical account for the ship or the type of ship the model represents.
This paper should include source of the model (if kit - vendor, if scratch - source of plans and % of model that is scratch) and
scale built in. This should be one page only on 8 ½” x 11" sheet of paper, typed or legibly printed. Point Value 1 – 5
Historical Accuracy: Does the model accurately depict the real ship for the time period modeled? The model will be judged
based on the historical account given with the model, the model as presented and the judge’s personal knowledge of the
subject. Point Value 1 - 10
Construction Value: Is the model well built? Do pieces fit? Are edges cut to fit? Does the paint, varnish or stain look sloppy?
Is everything on the model in proportion? Are there glue marks anywhere? Operational models will be judged as static. The
modeler’s craftsmanship is being evaluated. Point Value 1 - 50
Overall Appeal: Does the model look pleasing to the eye? Does the extra diorama type effects that are made, make it a more
(or less) interesting model (figurines, displays next to the model such as anchors, ships boats, other fittings, etc.)? This is an
evaluation of the models "WOW" appeal. Point Value 1 - 35

Upon submission of your entry to the Ohio State Fair’s Creative
Arts competition(s), you agree to hold harmless and forever
discharge the State of Ohio, Ohio Expositions Commission, its
members, officers, employees, contractors and other authorized
agents from any and all claims, actions, causes of actions,
demands, costs, or damages that may arise from the loss, theft or
other damage to your property during or related to its exhibition at
the Ohio State Fair.
Entry tag and Quilt & Wall Hanging Description Form must be
attached with a small safety pin to each item (front right hand
bottom corner).
Quilts and wall hangings will be displayed at the risk of the
owner. Creative Arts staff will be in attendance to help monitor
exhibits and make every effort protect them.
A National Quilting Association Certified judge will assess the
quilts pre-fair, selecting class standings and BOS winners.
The judge will complete a comment sheet that will be returned
with each entry. This sheet provides contestants with skill
improvement assessments and helpful comments.
If contestant’s name is sewn into the entry or is on any label, it
must be covered for judging.
Entries must be fabric, except for Classes 16 and 17, and should
be quilted through three layers (top, batting and backing).
Entries must be stitched and quilted by the contestant (or group
depending upon class) and made within the past three years.
Class 2 entries are limited to first-time entrant; this contestant has
never entered a quilt at the Ohio State Fair. Awards given in
memory of Paul McDade.
Class 1 - 7 entries must measure a minimum of 72” on the shortest
side (undersized entries will be disqualified and will not be
displayed).
All entries, except class 7, must be hand or machine quilted by the
contestant (home sewing machine or mid-or long-arm machine).
All construction, including quilting, must be the work of the
contestant except for Classes 6-7 (Group/Team Project).
Classes 1 and 11 are hand quilted only.
Class 7 pieces were quilted by someone other than the entrant
who was paid for their quilting work.
Classes 1-14 and 18, Quilts and Wall Hangings, must be quilted
(tufted or tied will not be accepted).
Classes 15 and 18, Quilted Clothing and Other Quilted Items,
must be predominately quilted. A small amount of tufts or ties
may be present. Tied or tufted comforters will not be accepted in
the quilting division.
Classes 6-7, Group/Team Quilt projects must be made by two or
more people (i.e. club project, family members, neighbors, etc.)
whose names, one of which is the contestant, must be listed on the
Quilt & Wall Hanging Description Form. Only quilts in class 7
may be quilted by someone paid for the service.
Miniature quilt: with overall patterns reflecting reduced scale and
miniaturization. If blocks are used they should be proportional.
Quilts must measure 24” or less on each side.

Sleeves - Preparing Your Piece:
All entries (except classes 15-19) must
have a sleeve attached securely to the top
edge of the quilt to facilitate its hanging on
a metal rod.
The sleeve may be of muslin or any fabric
sewn or safety pinned to the back of the
quilt (much like a rod heading on a curtain
– absolutely no straight pins). The sleeve
must have a 4” wide opening to
accommodate the metal rod and should be
as long as the quilt width to allow the quilt
to hang smoothly.
Entries over 90” must have a sleeve
attached to the back at 90” from the
bottom for display.
Quilts with scalloped or irregular edge
should have the sleeve positioned, by the
contestant, in such a way as to have the
entire face of the quilt displayed.
Wall hangings must have a sleeve or
means for display hanging. Large pieces
will need a 4” sleeve; smaller pieces may
have dowel or heading for a smaller
hanging device.
Entries in Wall Hangings classes must
have a suitable dowel rod or lath strip,
clearly marked with contestant’s name, for
hanging.
