History of Yoga

History of Yoga
FIG 17
In Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, the word “yoga” means "spiritual discipline." Yoga is often
associated with the postures and stances that make up the physical activity of the exercise, but
closer study reveals that there are many more aspects of yoga. It is an activity that has been
practiced for thousands of years, and it is something that has evolved and changed overtime, and
different factions of yoga have developed since its conception.
The main course in this FIG, “The History of Yoga” (LCA 300), traces the development of
religious practices subsumed under the name Yoga in Hindu traditions of South Asia from early
to modern times. In this course, we will also study the adaptation of these practices in the West.
In this course you will also learn how to write a good research paper. Two workshops in the
Writing Center will introduce you to the basics of academic writing. You will also learn how to
use the library system at UW-Madison and how to utilize specialized electronic databases to
locate books and articles. Besides being important skills for this course, these are skills that will
prepare you to be successful in your studies at UW-Madison.
This FIG will also include these linked courses:
Anthropology 104: Cultural Anthropology and Human Diversity. This course offers a
comparative cross-cultural consideration of social organization, economics, politics, language,
religion, ecology, gender, and cultural change.
Philosophy 101: Introduction to Philosophy. This course will introduce you to ways to compare
various philosophical positions regarding such topics as the nature of reality, the foundations of
