AOTA 95th Annual Conference & Expo Administration and Management Specialty Interest Section (AMSIS) BUZZ Session 203 (Friday, April 17, 2015, 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.) Mentoring Employees to Increase Engagement and Participation While Maintaining Work/Life Balance Session Description This session will assist participants in partnering with their employees to include mentoring new and experienced therapists as well as how to inspire others to get the highest level of engagement from the entire team. Work/life balance will also be discussed and strategies shared. • BUZZ Session Format o Brief overview of key points o Group discussion/sharing Session Objectives At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to: • Explore ways to engage staff in meeting departmental expectations, quality care, efficient and effective documentation while maintaining work/life balance • Gain information on mentoring new and experienced employees to meet the demands in healthcare Discussion Questions • What type of formal and/or informal tools or approaches do you use to assess your staff’s strengths, weaknesses, and interests? • What do you feel are essential considerations for mentoring? • What do you do to improve work life balance for yourself and your employees? • You have a staff member who show excellent evaluation and care delivery skills and abilities, but is chronically behind and frustrated with documentation. When you assess his/her documentation, you find that it is very thorough with a tremendous amount of detail. How do you help this staff member to find a balance between thoroughness and conciseness? • You have staff member trying to care for elderly parents and another for two small children. You must cover weekends and deal with late afternoon admissions on Fridays. How do you work this situation out? • Other situations and/or discussion points?
