Kath set up the business in May 2009 and Lynn became a partner in October 2009. It has grown from that day to become the busy little salon it is now. We believe the owner’s lifestyle as well as the needs of the dog have to be considered and will always discuss these. Top Sellers We handstrip terriers and spaniels, never clipping them unless the owner has requested the dog is clipped. We have a range of natural shampoos to suit all breeds and coats which can be purchased in the pet store below the salon for owners to use between grooms. Lynn is qualified in canine behaviour and training which ensures even nervous dogs are groomed with the least amount of stress. What makes your business special? All our dogs are groomed on a one to one basis. We never have more than one dog at a time unless it is appointment change over. We get to know the dog and the owner and show them how to take care of the coat between grooms. Perfect Pooches Dog Training owned by Lynn Whitelaw Business History Having had dogs all my life I gained a rescue dog 7 years ago. I went to consult a behaviourist whose methods made the dog worse. In despair I went back to college part time and gained a Foundation Degree in Canine Behaviour and Training. The experience and the exchange of knowledge and understanding with a diverse range of students were invaluable. Top Sellers I am a qualified teacher/trainer of adults so I not only train the dogs but the owners too – giving them the confidence to train their own dog. One of the methods I use is ‘Clicker Training’ which is based on the principles that are used at Sea World to train dolphins and whales. What makes your business special? Part of successful dog training is to ensure that the owner and dog bond. To do this, both have to be enjoying the training so all my training is like a game to the dog and fun for the owner, even though it is designed with basic obedience at its core. There are many extremes in dog training, some good and some bad. I always adopt a commonsense and fair approach and use rewards in one way or another – be it food, toys or just a cuddle. I base the training around the breed and the owner. There is no magic wand but the rewards when the dog and owner achieve their targets are very satisfying for all. Cawthorne House owned by Jayne and Steve Barrow Business History We bought Cawthorne House, which was an established B&B, in February 2009. Having been a primary school teacher, this was a new venture for me (Jayne) and it was to be a steep learning curve as our first PPGs (Proper Paying Guests) arrived on February 14th! We spent a busy summer learning the ropes and getting used to our new lifestyle; the autumn and winter passed redecorating the bedrooms and refurbishing and upgrading all five en-suite shower rooms. 2010 has been another busy year (in spite of the current economic climate) and we are looking forward to another successful season next year. Top Sellers Cawthorne House is a beautiful Grade II listed building which has a charm and appeal all of its own. With many original features, decorated in keeping with its style and age, yet offering modern day comforts, Cawthorne House aims to provide a relaxing and welcoming place in which to spend a few days. What makes your business special? When I told my children that I was going to buy a B&B, their reaction was ‘But why Mum? You don’t like cooking or cleaning?’ My answer .... ‘I like people’. And it’s simply that – I really hope that it is Steve and I who make our Guest House stand out from the crowd. We both want to make sure our guests have a happy, relaxing and enjoyable time, in what is after all, our home.
