NATIONAL RIDE TO SCHOOLDAY: Congratulations and well done on a highly successful ‘Ride 2 School’ Day last Friday. Judging by all the
bikes in the gym, it was an outstanding response from 179 of our students. Big
thanks to Lucy for organising the logistics of the day!
New smoking bans to apply on school grounds and at school
entrances.
From 13 April 2015, smoking will be banned within four
metres of an entrance to all primary and secondary schools
in Victoria, and within the school grounds, under an
amendment to the Tobacco Act 1987.



A similar ban applying to the entrances and grounds of Victorian childcare centres and kindergartens will be
introduced at the same time.
While smoking was banned on the grounds of all Victorian Government schools by the Minister for
Education in 2009 via a Ministerial Ban Order, the new bans are enshrined in legislation and will also apply to
Catholic and independent schools in Victoria, thereby ensuring a consistent approach across the government
and non-government sectors.
It is a legislative requirement that each school installs suitable ‘No smoking’ signs at all entrances to the
school premises.
END OF TERM 1
This Friday, 27th March is the final day of Term 1. We will have our end of term assembly and draw our EASTER RAFFLE. Students will be

Introducing some of out Educational Support….
Hi my name is Dianne Catley and I have been working at F.P.S 3 days a week for 6 1/2 years. I am
fortunate to work in the E.L.C on a Monday. I am lucky to work with such wonderful children and to be
part of an amazing team. I live in the mountains and enjoy the outdoors.
Hi my name is Alina Dickins and this is my 8th year working here at Findon. This year I am running the
Language Support Program for the junior school under the direction
of Ruth, our Speech Therapist. It’s a wonderful program and I love
working with the students one on one and seeing the great progress
that they make in their grammar, auditory memory, vocabulary
and phonological awareness. When I’m not working I’m spending
time with my husband Grant, my 2 children, Michael and Natalie and
our little dog Roger. We love to travel and just last year went to New York for Christmas to visit my
family. Feel free to knock on my door and say Hi!
Hi! I'm Rhiannon Patterson and I'm 23 years old. I am an Education Support staff member and am currently
assisting in Year 4 DF!! I have been working at Findon for almost 2 years now and have loved every minute of it!
I have worked in a school environment over the past 6 years. I love to dance and play sports.
I am completing my second year of my Bachelor of Education (online). I cannot wait to become a teacher!
See you around the school!
Rhiannon.
Hi, my name is Michael and I’m the ‘Tech Guy’ here at Findon. I have been here for just under a year and
have loved every second of it. It’s a really friendly small school with great kids, parents and staff that come
together to make an amazing community. When I’m at home, I like to spend my time working on my
computers at home (surprise, surprise), Listening to music, cooking and hanging out with mates. Hope to see
you all around, don’t be shy to come by the Tech Office for a quick hello or some techie advice if you need it.
Hi! My name is Tegan and I am one of the Education Support Staff at Findon. This year, I
am working in Year 6, Year 2 and Foundation. In my spare time, I enjoy going to my
dancing class on a Monday with my friends, and a Saturday with the toddlers. I also like
going to the shops, and watching my fiancé Andrew play football on the weekends. If you
see me around the school yard, come up and say Hi!
Hi I am Shelley, one of the fabulous ES staff at Findon. From Tuesday - Friday I take care of
all things library, first aid and I am an aide in lovely Laura's year one class. I really enjoy the
time I spend in the class room it is quite a change from working as a registered nurse in
mental health. On my Mondays off I plan to start working towards getting a post grad. in
Adolscent Mental Health but for now I am enjoying the quiet of the house to
myself. At home with my 3 children and hubby Michael we love to build lego,
play cricket, follow North Melbourne in the AFL and are about to embark on
our first camping trip as a family in a real tent. No more glamping for this
family. Happy Easter and have a safe holiday.
I leave you with the following words to ponder
‘Grandparents bestow upon their grandchildren, the strength and wisdom that time and experience has given them. Grandchildren
bless their Grandparents with a youthful vitality and innocence that helps them stay young at heart forever. Together they create a
chain of love linking the past with the future. The chain may lengthen, but it will never part!
Have a happy and safe Easter and holiday break!

Restorative Practices and Circle Time at Findon
All Staff at Findon Primary School recently participated in Restorative Practices Workshops and teachers have
begun implementing the restorative practices approach in classrooms across Foundation to Year 6. You may have
heard your child mention ‘Circle Time’. Below is some information that explains the philosophy of ‘Circle Time’
and the benefits of this approach. (source: http://www.restorativepathways.com.au/circles/)
Circle Time
‘Circle Time’ in schools is a structured framework used with groups in many different ways. It takes place
regularly throughout the week, varying in length and content depending on the purpose and age of the
participants. There are rules; everyone gets a turn, individuals may pass, there are no put-downs. Although the
content varies, when used regularly (2 + times weekly) circle time enhances:

Relationships

Self awareness, knowledge and skills

Knowledge and understanding of others

Emotional literacy

Collaborative decision making, conflict resolution and problem solving

A sense of belonging and connectedness
Restorative Practices
In terms of Restorative Practices, the use of circles with students, staff and community can go a long way to build
and strengthen relationships. We want to be spending the most amount of time building social/emotional capacity
within our classrooms and school so that when we need to manage difficulties and disruptions we have people
who ‘buy in’ to the process.
By actively encouraging positive relationships within all sectors of the school community we enhance:

Understanding

Empathy

Compassion
This week’s value

Acceptance

Belonging
is:

Tolerance

Harmony

Happiness
Positive relationships play an important role in preventing conflict and dealing with conflict. When we have
positive relationships with our students they are more likely to cooperate with us, more willing to work with us in
a calm manner and more likely to comply with consequences.

‘Harmony Day’ Everyone Belongs…
On Thursday 19th March Learning Team Two celebrated Harmony Day by dressing in orange
or wearing their culture’s clothing, participating in rotations involving cultural activities and then
welcoming family and friends to share their culture’s food together. It was a wonderful day that
fits well with our school’s values and commitment to Kids Matter and creating a positive school
community by being welcoming, inclusive and developing a sense of belonging!
