PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE - By Tom Marazzi
TCA activity is picking up with both car shows, driving
events and raffle truck events. We have two car
shows where the raffle truck will be in attendance
and one BBQ event at the Freeman Expo Center, all in
late September. Then in October we will have three
events where we will be selling tickets for the truck.
Gary and Gay Burgess led our run through the hill
country on Saturday 9/14/2013. What a great drive.
I believe we had 27 cars and one constable on the
run. See article below. The Burgess’s did a great job.
At our September 3, 2013 General Membership
meeting we started accepting nominations for the
election our 2014 officers and officers at large.
Nominations will close at the start of our November 5, 2013 meeting. This gives everyone two months
to consider running for either an Officer position or an Officer at Large position. Active members may
nominate themselves or another member (with their permission) for these positions. Members
choosing to run only need to inform one of the current officers for nomination. From those named we
will have our ballot and our secretary will then mail the ballots to the active membership list. Each
person running for office may take a minute at the November meeting to introduce themselves. Voters
will then mail their ballots to Mike Forbis to be tabulated. Mike will announce those selected at our
December meeting.
And finally the planning for the 2014 Caravan to the NCM is proceeding nicely. Lake and Kathi Ellis, our
caravan captains, have mapped out the route, selected hotels and will plan a separate meeting for the
caravan participants sometime early next year. If you plan to attend you MUST have registered with the
NCM. Lake has blocks of rooms reserved but will not release them to someone not registered. The
agenda of activities at the museum will not be out until sometime early in 2014 and with that we will be
able to complete the planning process. The one way trip is just over 985 miles taking over 15 hours of
driving time. This does not account for meals, bio breaks etc. So we will have two long days. This is
looking to be a great trip.
Thank you for making the TCA the best car club in San Antonio.

The App Corner – By Lake Ellis
The APP Corner is a place to share your favorite smartphone or pad APPs with other TCA members.
Here are two APPs that I have found very useful. You can download these from your favorite APP store.
MileBug Do you drive your own car for business? Track your trips and get your tax deduction with this
app. At tax time, simply email the report to yourself directly from MileBug. The is a free app or get one
that is more detailed for a one time fee of $2.99.
Starbucks No doubt one of my favorite most used apps! If you are like me and need a Starbucks fix while
on the road in your Corvette, you will love this app. It locates the nearest Starbucks, gives you the store
hours, phone number and will give you directions to the store. This is a MUST HAVE app for caffeine
lovers.
Send me your favorite APPs to be shared and included in future editions of THE APP CORNER.
Email your favorite APPs (along with a brief explanation) to lake.ellis@gmail.com to be included in
future editions of the APP Corner.
On My Bucket List - Car Week in Monterey, CA. – By Lake Ellis
Les Hobgood, Mike Forbis, Sam & Cathy Castorani, Paul & Sherrie Cavazos, Paul & Irene Meri, Gary &
Linda Davidson, Jim & Carol Chandler, Kathi and I all have checked off Car Week at Monterey from our
respective Bucket Lists. We traveled to Monterey, California to attend Car Week on August 14th through
August 19. During the week we enjoyed a Mecum Auto Auction, The Small Car Show, a review of the
Tour d'Elegance cars in Carmel, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca (Corvette was
the featured marque) and the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Cars everywhere! Corvette, Ferrari,
Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Rolls Royce, Duesenberg and many, many more! Life is good during Car
Week in Monterey, and we enjoyed ourselves!
TCA members, Joe & Brenda Murphy, live part of the year in Monterey. They graciously invited us over
to their mountain top home to enjoy dinner and the fantastic scenery with great friends. What a great
site to see the Chandlers', Castoranis' , Cavazos', Hobgood's, and our Corvettes next to Joe's three (3).
Joe "twisted" the arms of Les, Paul and I and "forced" us to hit a few golf balls over the side of the
mountain to a ravine below. Joe & Brenda's "Texas Hospitality" is alive and well in California, and we all
had a great time!
Driving to and from California was a great trip. Les & Mike, Sam & Kathy, Paul & Sherrie, Jim & Carol and
Kathi & I drove our Corvettes. Gary & Linda and Paul & Irene flew to California. The Corvettes were well
tested over the 5,000 trip (they were made to drive!!). We saw temperatures ranging from a non-
5
seasonal (for us) upper 40's to a sweltering 122 F in Death Valley!!! The Corvettes performed
exceptionally and averaged approximately 27 to 28 MPG!
Be sure and add Monterey Car Week to your bucket list! You will not regret it!

Celebrity Watch At Monterey – By Lake Ellis
An additional highlight of our trip to Monterey was spotting a number of celebrities at Laguna Seca and
the Concours d'Elegance. The relaxed atmosphere at the track provided a great opportunity to catch
photos (and a few autographs) of these automotive notables. Among the more famous that we
encountered were Jay Leno (Tonight Show), Craig Jackson (Barrett-Jackson Auctions), Johnny O'Connell
(Corvette Race Driver), Peter Brock (GM designer, author, race driver, race team owner), Justin Bell (TV
personality, LeMans Driver), Chad McQueen (son of Steve McQueen) and Sir Jackie Stewart (Formula 1
Champion).

The Truck That Keeps on Giving – By Ken Rodriguez, The San Antonio Express News
What would happen if you asked Tim Duncan’s
Blackjack Speed Shop to customize a 2013 Dodge
Ram 1500 4x4?
The truck would emerge like nothing you’ve ever
seen -- and impact the community like you couldn’t
imagine.
The two tone vehicle -- painted white and silver -- is
one-of-a kind. It not only has a six-inch lift and 35inch tires, a custom bumper and chrome mesh
grille, a 20-inch LED driving light and AMP Research
electric-powered running boards. It’s got a hood
cowl wrapped and signed by the 2012-13 Spurs
roster.
It’s a truck lover’s dream. The best part is this: it’s
been making a lot of other dreams come true
throughout the San Antonio community. The
vehicle, donated by North Star Dodge, has been
sold and given away multiple times to benefit three
charities and will benefit a fourth in April. If the
fundraising goes according to plan, the truck will generate more than $250,000.
“It’s fairly common to go to an auction, buy a vehicle and donate it to charity,” says HOLT Companies
Executive Vice President Larry Mills, whose company purchased the truck for $60,000 before giving it
away. “But no one has heard of anything like this before -- where a vehicle has gone from one charity to
another and then to another. It’s unique.”
Ken Rodriguez is a San Antonio native who
covered his first Spurs game in 1981 for The
Daily Texan, the University of Texas student
newspaper. He spent 26 years in the
newspaper business -- 21 of them covering
sports -- before joining the marketing
department at Our Lady of the Lake University in 2009. His Spurs.com column will appear every
Wednesday.

Three Twisted Sisters – Drive, Drive, Drive, and Dine Event
The weather was perfect for our great run through the Texas Hill Country. The route was called “The
Three Twisted Sisters” and it certainly lived up to its name. These three roads are rated highly by
Motorcycle and Sports Car enthusiasts, and we all learned why. There was a fantastic turnout, with 27
Cars signed up for the event, and 29 showed up! We all met at the Court House in Bandera, TX for the
Driver’s Brief. From Bandera, we traveled through Medina, and Vanderpool to Leakey for our first “Pit
Stop”. After a short break, we continued on “The Sisters”. Camp Wood, and Barksdale were the only
“Wide Spots” until we returned to Leakey for lunch at The Bent Rim Grill. There were many twists and
turns, with quite a few dramatic elevation changes. If you missed this event, don’t fret. We are already
planning another ride on “The Sisters”. Most likely the ride will be after the Holiday Season. Keep an
eye on future newsletters for the date and time.
All lined up and ready to go!

Performance Test for C 7 – Reprinted From Motor Trend Magazine
Among the biggest questions about the all-new 2014 Corvette Stingray Z51, from the very start, was
this: How much power does it make? Chevy kept us waiting with promises of “at least 450 horsepower
and 450 lb-ft of torque” before finally settling on 455 horsepower and 460 lb-ft, or 460 horsepower and
465 lb-ft with the optional Dual-Mode Performance Exhaust. But how much does it really make? We
took a trip to K&N Engineering in Riverside, California, to make a run on their chassis dyno. Our car was
equipped with the seven-speed manual transmission, Z51 performance package, and the optional dualmode exhaust for that extra bit of power, but mostly for the sound. It’s an early car, VIN 13, but it had
2200 miles on it at test time, so it was broken-in. The test was run on California-grade 91 octane. The
verdict: 402 hp at 5900 RPM and 400 lb-ft of torque at 4800 RPM at the wheels. Factor in drivetrain
losses and you’ve got almost exactly what Chevy promised at the crank. That SAE power certification
really does mean something.
