Shorewood High School
D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S
Welcome to CABARET, the final production in the 2014-2015 Shorewood High School
Drama Season! After opening last autumn with the dark comedy LITTLE SHOP OF
HORRORS, we then produced Neil Simon’s hilarious comedy RUMORS in January. Tonight,
we end our mainstage season with a wonderfully powerful musical classic.
Last year, I took about 30 students to see a professional production of CABARET in
Chicago. It was mesmerizing. I have never had the opportunity to direct the show before,
although I was lucky enough to see the 1998 Broadway Revival with Alan Cumming. The
show seems like a natural fit for Shorewood, with its clever wit, important message, and
progressive themes.
The original Broadway production opened in 1966 at the Broadhurst Theatre and had a
1,165 performance run. Joel Grey was the Emcee and Burt Convy (of game show hosting
fame) was Cliff. CABARET was nominated for 11 Tony Awards, and won eight, including:
Best Musical, Best Score, Best Featured Actor (Grey), Best Featured Actress (Peg Murray),
Best Direction, Best Choreography, Best Scenic Design, and Best Costume Design.
John Kander wrote the music for CABARET and Fred Ebb wrote the lyrics. Other famous
musicals by this duo include CHICAGO, KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN, FOSSE, and CURTAINS.
The cast, crew, and orchestra are particularly excited about this show…the set is huge,
the costumes are gorgeous, the orchestra is beautiful (and in costume!), the dancing is
challenging, and the story is exciting. Hats off to the entire SHS Drama Artistic Team for
all of the hard work getting this musical prepared. For each production, our goal is to
have the audience leave the show saying, “I can’t believe that was high school theatre!”
We hope we have achieved that goal tonight.
Our musicals cost a lot of money…if you’d like to become a supporter of Shorewood
Drama, please email Mr. King at jking@shorewood.k12.wi.us
Finally, thank you for your support. The spring musical is an endeavor that includes the
entire performing arts department – band, orchestra, acting, costumes, technical crew,
and choir. The arts are alive and well in Shorewood Schools. Thank you for being an
ambassador for the arts in public schools! Enjoy CABARET!
