Servicio de Universidades, Calidad y Formación Sección de Formación y Calidad Santo Domingo, 8 – 2ª planta 31001 PAMPLONA Tlfnos: 848 42 47 75 – 848 42 47 76 How to Assess Skills and Content in the Natural Science Classroom in Primary NAVARRA-NAFARROA Type 5-hour course Addressed to: A maximum of 70 teachers teaching in English in Primary Education (PAI, etc). Please, when you register, specify your teaching area and whether you work in PAI or not. Teachers of English as a Foreign Language in Primary schools may also apply. Justification This is a follow up to the course “Do and Understand: A practical approach for working in Science through English” from last September. Many teachers told us that learning how to teach science was very useful, but they also needed help in the assessment and evaluation areas. Note: this course is open to everyone interested, not only to the teachers who attended the course in September. Aims To develop an overview of what assessment means and may not mean. To consider the efficacy of planning backwards: going from task to learning steps, with assessment in mind all thorough the process. To form working groups by sector to produce some practical examples of assessment procedure at different stages of Natural Science. Contents There will be discussion of the first topic- the nature of assessment within Natural Sciences and the new curriculum- leading to a pyramid debate. That is, we will work through our ideas in small groups and then hold a plenary. The next step will be a microteaching session on one aspect of the Natural Science syllabus so that teachers can see the relationship between a final task, prior learning steps and assessment. The grid format with “can do’s” will be examined in particular and, apart from subject content, we will look at the skills needed for children to develop as scientists. Finally, there will be working groups to produce something similar to the model for other topics and ages. Groups will then present their work to their colleagues and we will decide what working principles can be gained from this exercise. Methodology While there will be some theoretical input on assessment, the focus will be practical. Moreover, it will be more about learning how to fish than having the fish delivered to teachers on a plate. This is a new area with the changes in the curriculum and we have to collaborate to develop new assessment procedures, well beyond the scope of a five-hour course. Teacher Ana Demitroff has taught and done teacher training in the USA, UK and Spain for more than two decades. She holds the RSA Diploma and a Masters in TESOL. Nevertheless, she feels she learns most from working alongside her colleagues and the pupils themselves. Most of all, she has had the privilege of seeing how real primary schools in Galicia function from the inside because her language school has actively collaborated in pluralingual programs over the years.
