Central Park, Fourth Avenue and Broad Street
Grinnell Farmer’s Market will take place in Central Park 3-6 p.m. Enjoy the market, or visit
downtown Grinnell for dinner or shopping. Shuttles to Central Park will be available from the
front of the JRC starting at 3 p.m. Shuttles will run every half hour. The last shuttle will pick up
guests at 8 p.m. at Central Park.

Join current students for a walking tour of Grinnell’s campus. There will be golf carts available

Music in the Park – Featuring I-398
Central Park, Fourth Avenue and Broad Street
I-398 formed in the fall of 1969 and draws its name from the independent-study course in which
band-members earned college credit for composing and performing rock n' roll music. They play
a mix of 60's and 70's rock favorites and their own compositions. Back in the day, they often
collaborated with their faculty adviser, David Abel of the Francesco Trio (who played electric
violin in the band). I-398 has morphed to include other players over the years. But the general
reaction of current-day younger-generation listeners is "Hey! These old folks are pretty good!"

Meet at Bikes To You, 921 Broad Street
In this guided ride, you will get a chance to get some exercise while exploring the town of
Grinnell and the countryside of Iowa. The group will bike approximately 10 miles on paved
roads while Craig Cooper, owner of Bikes To You (the local bike shop) and past Grinnell
Chamber of Commerce president, will share interesting historical and community information.
Helmets are required and both helmets and bikes are available for rental. Call or e-mail Bikes To

Associate Director of Planned Giving, Mary Stahl, will discuss general estate planning concepts.
She will also talk about the variety of opportunities to establish your legacy and invest in the
future of Grinnell College. Content of the program is appropriate for individuals who are
interested in learning more about planned giving in general as well as individuals who may
already have included Grinnell in their estate plans.

Trip to Conard Environmental Research Area (CERA)

Join faculty from the Department of Biology in touring the College’s biological field station.
The 1.0 mile hike will take folks through reconstructed prairie, restored savanna, along Willow
Creek and Perry Pond, and through two experimental plot arrays, and end with a brief tour of the

In keeping with Grinnell's mission and core values, the Liberal Arts in Prison Program enrolls
people in prison in a demanding college program equivalent to a year at Grinnell College. In
addition, a student volunteer program supports and supplements the accredited program. Join
former incarcerated students, President Emeritus and professor of history, George Drake ‘56,
and Prison Program Coordinator Emily Guenther '07 for a panel discussion about the program's
impact.

Meet at the courtyard by the Bookstore
This game will make you learn new things about the campus you thought you knew. Moomba is
a perfect activity for families to do together and is appropriate for all ages, as long as you are fine

Communities and Responsive Governance: Academic and
Practical Perspectives

How do communities create and influence governing agencies and public policies that are
responsive to their needs? When they attempt to do so, what kinds of problems arise and how
might they seek resolution? William Ferguson ’75, Gertrude B. Austin Professor of Economics
here at Grinnell College, presents an academic perspective, including discussion of problems
inherent in collective action, models of self-governing, and externally governed
communities. David Calvert ’75, community organizer and nonprofit director, provides a
practical perspective. He will discuss successful community-based campaigns to guide public
policy and effect systemic change through community participation and shared action.

Brain to the Body and Back: Paul H. Patterson's ‘65 Life in Science,” and Palmer Hartl ’65 on

Grinnell College Chalutzim and Rabbi Rob Cabelli welcome you to celebrate Shabbat, the
Jewish Sabbath. A brief service welcoming the Sabbath will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed
immediately at 6:00 p.m. by Shabbat Table, a special vegetarian/dairy dinner prepared by
Grinnell College students – as has been done every Friday night throughout the academic year
through many generations of Grinnell College students. All are welcome to participate in this
characteristically Grinnell form of building a caring and pluralistic spiritual community. Shabbat
Table dinner tickets are required.

The Land’s Music – a film hosted by Director of Photography,

The Land’s Music is a fictional story about a nomadic tribe coping with severe drought in the
vicinity of the Silk Road 1000 years ago. Filmed along the actual ancient route, in remote parts
of Xinjiang Province in China, the film offers a feast of rarely seen landscapes. Presented in
Kazakh with English subtitles. Carl Thelin ’90 was involved in the project from script
development through the film’s completion. Carl will host a talk-back after the film. Sponsored
by the class of 1990.

Celebrate the 60th Reunion at a special social with music.
Toward the end of the Friday night gathering, M.J. (Poynter) Zimmerman ’56 and George
Drake ’56 will host a conversation about student days at Grinnell in the late 40’s and 50’s.
While conducting research for a biography of Joe Rosenfield ’25 he is working on, George has
been reading trustee notes, the Scarlett & Black, and other papers from that era. Now, with a new
appreciation for the challenges that faced Grinnell in that era and the way that the college
responded to those challenges, George and M.J. are eager to hear classmate perspectives after 60
years.
Shuttles to the Mayflower will be offered beginning at 7:00 p.m. Shuttles will depart from in
front of the Joe Rosenfield ’25 Center and will depart approximately every 10-15 minutes
through 7:45 p.m. Return shuttles will be offered on an ongoing basis from the Mayflower

classes are challenging yet supportive. Please bring your own mat. A limited number of blankets

Rachel Dobkin ’05 will lead this yoga session with options for both beginners and advanced
practitioners. Rachel teaches all levels vinyasa yoga in Philadelphia. Rachel believes yoga can be
beneficial for everyone, especially those who are suffering. Rachel’s alignment-based vinyasa
classes are challenging yet supportive. Please bring your own mat. A limited number of blankets

will be available for use. In the case of inclement weather, this event will be held in the Dance
