The MANY FACES of the ASRT Foundation 2013 ANNUAL REPORT A tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to support and empower medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals and students as they pursue opportunities to enhance the quality and safety of patient care. RETURNING STUDENTS Christina Hendricks, R.T.(R), RDMS, RVT, of Madison, Wisconsin Bachelor’s degree program at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee Nhi Vu Recipient of a 2013 Parsons Degree Achievement Scholarship Christina is employed by a large academic hospital in the Midwest. When she’s not studying for her next test, her time is mostly spent in the ultrasound department working with a variety of patient populations, including pediatrics, trauma, transplant and oncology. Christina has a passion for sonography and appreciates the importance of her role in various ultrasound procedures, functioning as a team and providing essential services to patients who desire the best care possible. “Cathy Parsons’ legacy is inspiring in a field where a degree is not yet necessary but still an honored accomplishment. Being a working adult returning to college seems daunting, but the assistance of the ASRT Foundation in providing scholarship opportunities affords many of us the ability to focus less on financial considerations and more on our academic and professional aspirations.” Medical Imaging Educators Scholarship, $5,000 each Traci Fox of Pennsylvania Michael Hartman of New York Chad Hunley of Tennessee ofRonald Plano, Texas Walker of Ohio Parsons Degree Achievement Scholarship, $2,000 each Angela Abbott of Tennessee Anol Abraham of New Jersey Ellen Alexander of Florida Matthew Alyassin of Florida Craig Barnes of Maryland Christina Clarke of Iowa Sophia Dasilva of New York Stephanie Fogel of Indiana Jacob Hardin of Missouri Christina Hendricks of Wisconsin Stewart Hofmann of Wisconsin Krista Kackley of Minnesota Traci Knoblock of South Dakota Sharon Kurjan of Ohio LaVene Lohrbach of Tennessee Kayla Martens of Georgia David Moore of Ohio Mary Ann Talbot of New York Tanya VanTreeck of Florida Vickie Vinnedge of Illinois Professional Advancement Scholarship, $2,000 each Victoria Barnosky of Pennsylvania Dale Collins of Alaska Michelle “Karen” Eastham of Kentucky Elizabeth Price of New Jersey Kyle Prinkey of New Mexico Theresa Roberts of Florida Elizabeth Spencer of Kentucky Karen Sweeney-Lemus of Florida Todd Van Auken of Florida Benjamin Wood of Iowa Siemens Clinical Advancement Scholarship, $5,000 each Julie Aguayo of Indiana Kelsey Johnson of Connecticut Jennifer Ramos of California Tonya Viars of North Carolina Varian Radiation Therapy Advancement Scholarship, $5,000 each Mellonie Brown of California Alisen Fitzpatrick of Wisconsin Jeremy Gamble of California Jaclyn Herndon of Kansas Jonathan Jackson of North Carolina Michael Le of Massachusetts Nishele Lenards of Minnesota Mary McBride of Maryland Barbara Miller of Pennsylvania Amanuel Negussie of Minnesota Cory Neill of Nevada Lindsey Nelson of Michigan Robin Pritchard of Texas Maryna Razhko of California Kameka Rideaux of Texas Andrew Rieck of Pennsylvania Kyle Riffle of Ohio Marcus Robinson of Virginia Katie Simmons of Mississippi E N T R Y- L E V E L S T U D E N T S Nhi Vu of Plano, Texas Bachelor’s degree program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Elekta Radiation Therapy Scholarship, $5,000 each Nhi Vu of Plano, Texas Christopher Alley of Indiana Recipient of a 2013 Elekta Radiation Therapy Scholarship Nhi moved to the United States when she was just 17 years old. Her parents and younger brother remain in a little village outside Saigon, Vietnam. There, they run a small restaurant with the absolute best pho and dream of a better future for their daughter. Before attending UT Southwestern, Nhi studied at a local community college in Plano, Texas, where she earned an associate degree and always pushed herself to the best of her ability. Nhi believes that this scholarship not only helps her focus more on her radiation therapy education, but also makes her family extremely proud of her. After she graduates, she wants to become more involved with the radiation therapy community and use the knowledge and experience she’s gained to help others around the world. “I am truly grateful to receive this scholarship. This has not just helped me further my education, but helped me pursue my passion to assist others as well.” Jessica Culbertson of Texas Mark Fowler of Michigan Nhi Vu of Texas Jerman-Cahoon Student Scholarship, $2,500 each Janelle Davies of Washington George Hutti of California Stephen Nash of Texas Courtney Rausch of Wisconsin Samuel Taylor of Florida Royce Osborn Minority Student Scholarship, $4,000 each Rosa Crivelli-Medina of California Joleen Evans of Oregon Kawsar Khan of New Jersey Amanda Mullen of Oklahoma Gideon Tameru of California RESEARCHERS Jenny Soo, M.Ed., R.T.(T), of Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada Radiation Clinical Educator at the British Columbia Cancer Agency – Vancouver Centre Recipient of a 2013 Professional Research Grant Jenny chose radiation therapy as her career field because it’s emotionally challenging yet technologically advanced. She is continually intrigued by the potential acquisition, involvement and contribution of knowledge in the field at multiple levels – from educating students to interacting with patients to acting as a catalyst for change to create a better environment for patients, staff and students. As a researcher, Jenny enjoys making her own unique contribution to the profession while also pushing forward knowledge and information that has gone previously unknown and communicating that knowledge to the community so that it can be further developed and utilized to improve the profession as a whole. “I always encourage higher level learning for the interest of learning, but I also understand it plays a role in generating opportunities. Many people speak in silence in the sense that they comment on an issue and when it is not supported by any data or evidence, the comment alone does not cause a change.” Professional Research Grant “Smart Devices and Educator Burnout” in the amount of $4,786.45 to Jeff B. Fellowship for Developing Countries Jackie has been involved in different aspects of volunteerism her entire life at a local level, and she always had the desire to expand that outreach to a broader audience. When she read about the R.T. Fellowship Program, she was immediately attracted to the prospect of not only giving back, but also being able to do so in the arena of women’s health – an area to which she has dedicated her career. When she was invited to join the team traveling to India to support an ongoing women’s health project, she described her emotional reaction as “ecstatic.” Having spent her time in India teaching basic positioning skills, as well as helping the unit’s lead technologist apply supplemental techniques on difficult-to-position patients, Jackie plans to return to India in the future to continue working with technologists and share her expertise with others. “I feel blessed to have been given the opportunity to serve this community in this capacity. It truly makes my spirit soar. I have received 1,000-fold the reward of what I have been given.” R.T. She became involved with the Research and Grants Advisory Panel because she believes that research is a critical component of establishing the radiologic sciences as a true profession and not just a job. Nina had few role models or mentors available to help her build her research skills. That’s one of the main reasons she dedicates her spare time to mentoring others and sharing her knowledge and experiences through committees like RGAP. “Serving as a volunteer for the ASRT and Foundation has helped me develop as a professional while making so many great friends throughout the United States. It’s a fantastic feeling to know that you are giving back to the community that has helped you become who you are.” Board of Trustees Parsha Hobson, M.P.A., R.T.(R); chairman Steven J. Little did she realize back then how much the radiologic sciences would continue to evolve and expand. Today, Virginia believes education is more important than ever. She continues to support the Foundation through an annual gift each year because she understands how important it is for R.T.s to have opportunities to advance themselves and the profession. Training & Media Services, Elekta Kim knew she wanted to be a radiation therapist, but she never dreamed that one day she would use her skills, knowledge and experience working for one of the largest oncology equipment and software manufacturers in the world. As the Vice President of Training & Media Services, Kim sees firsthand the importance of involving industry leaders like Elekta in efforts to improve the quality and safety of care for all patients. It’s one of the reasons why she enjoys representing Elekta on the Health Care Industry Advisory Council. Through her service on the Council, Kim has contributed to various whitepapers and presentations and helped change the face of health care for the better. “HCIAC provides an amazing forum for companies like Elekta to work collaboratively with peer organizations. When we pool our resources, knowledge and experiences together for the betterment of the entire radiologic sciences community and patients worldwide, everyone wins.” HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY ADVISORY COUNCIL GIFTS Strategic Ally ($20,000+) American Society of Radiologic Technologists* Varian Medical Systems* Platinum ($15,000+) Agfa HealthCare American Registry of Radiologic Technologists* Bayer HealthCare Elekta* GE Healthcare Hitachi Medical Systems America, Inc. Letter From the Board of Trustees Chairman Helen Keller is quoted as saying, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” The accomplishments featured in this annual report are prime examples of how working together as a community of volunteers, donors and supporters brings to fruition more than any one of us could have achieved alone. In 2013, more than 70 entry- and professional-level students received scholarships so they could finish their college degree or certificate program. Each one of those individuals represents the best and brightest in the field. Scholarships like these help ensure that R.T.s across the nation can obtain the education they need to move forward in their careers and to provide the best patient care possible. Research is also a critical component of moving the profession forward and delivering safe, effective care. During the past fiscal year, researchers received more than $40,000 to help them conduct investigations into topics like MRI safety, repetitive subconcussive head trauma and methods for developing leadership traits among technologists. Quite often, these projects yield valuable results, which are then shared through published articles in the ASRT journals and presentations at the Educational Symposium or Radiation Therapy Conference. Making sure the entire community has access to knowledge has always been an important part of ASRT Foundation programs. Through both the International Speakers Exchange and the R.T. Fellowship for Developing Countries programs, technologists around the globe are able to learn from the best R.T.s in the profession. We all know it takes a village of dedicated individuals and organizations to achieve these types of successes. Whether you’ve written a check to fund these awards or you’re a volunteer who has dedicated blood, sweat and tears to helping others, please know that your passion doesn’t go unnoticed. None of this would happen without you, and I hope you’ll continue to help us create even more opportunities for the future.
