SUPPORT,
RESEARCH,
AND CONQUER.
ABOUT FOUR DIAMONDS
Penn State Hershey Medical Center since
1993, and established the Four Diamonds
Center for Pediatric Cancer Research in
1999. Our funded research programs relate
to the investigation of the causes,
prevention, treatment, and cure of pediatric
cancer.
• Four Diamonds was founded in 1972 by
Charles and Irma Millard in honor of their
son Christopher who lost his battle with
childhood cancer.
•
Since then, Four Diamonds has served
more than 3,500 families receiving pediatric
cancer care at Penn State Hershey
Children’s Hospital.
•
Each year, Four Diamonds provides direct
support to approximately 600 children
with cancer - 100 who are newly diagnosed
•
Today, up to 75% of
children with cancer
can be cured, yet some
forms of childhood
cancers have proven so
resistant to treatment
that a cure is still elusive.
Childhood cancers that
continue to have a very poor
prognosis include: brain stem tumors,
metastatic sarcomas, relapsed acute
lymphoblastic leukemia, and relapsed
non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
ABOUT THE
CONQUER RUN
and 500 who are c
Conquering childhood cancer is our
primary purpose and we do that in the
following ways:
•
The event is a 5K run and fun walk. In 2014,
the event was held at Hersheypark in
Hershey, PA.
Superior Care – Four Diamonds
•
Since 2008, the event has raised more than
$454,000 for Four Diamonds.
•
Participants include community members,
competitive runners, and children and
families that have received direct support
from Four Diamonds.
•
The number of participants has grown steadily
since the event started, and includes all ages
•
All net proceeds from the event go
directly to Four Diamonds to support
programs and services for children being
treated for pediatric cancer at Penn State
Hershey Children’s Hospital and to the
Four Diamonds Pediatric Cancer Research
Institute.
WHY SUPPORT
FOUR DIAMONDS?
comprehensive medical care through a
team of expert pediatric oncologists,
nurse specialists, social workers, child life
specialists, a clinical nutritionist, a clinical
psychologist, and a music therapist.
Comprehensive Support – Four Diamonds
covers medical expenses for care and
treatment of the children not covered by
insurance or other means. Four Diamonds
also assists families with emergency
expenses that have the potential to
disrupt the welfare of their child’s health.
Innovative Research – Knowing that
research is what will ultimately lead us
to a cure, Four Diamonds has invested
in pediatric cancer research projects at
• Childhood cancer is the #1 disease killer
of children—more than asthma, cystic
combined.
•
•
One in 330 Americans will develop cancer
by the age of 20. On the average, 13,400
children and adolescents in the U.S. are
diagnosed with cancer each year.
Even though the cancer death rate has
dropped more dramatically for children
than for any other age group, 2,300
children and teenagers will die each year
from cancer.
