2014 Sacramento County Fair Metal Mania Friday, May 23rd, 2014 Cal Expo Grandstand Event Starts at 7:30 p.m. 1st $800 2nd $400 3rd $200 Truck Class Rules All rules are not subject to the interpretation of the officials, how they are type is how they are, any equipment that the officials consider not in the intent of the rules will be considered illegal for competition. These are not suggestions, nor is this a menu. This is what is allowed as far as preparation of the car. Please do not try to read anything more into these rules. Safety: 1. Anyone entering the pit area must display a pit pass on their arm. 2. No animals in the pit area. 3. Please keep your pit area clean. 4. Verbal or Physical abuse will not be tolerated. 5. No hot rodding in the pits. 6. A fire extinguisher in your pit area is recommended. 7. No person under the age of 16 allowed in the pit. 8. No one under the age of 18 without a sign waver. 9. No open toe shoes allowed in the pits at any time. 10. No Alcohol, Drugs, Firearms allowed in the pits at any time. Event: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. All injuries must be reported to track officials no matter how minor. Regulation racing crash helmets must be worn during the entire event. Long sleeve shirts mandatory, no shorts. Seat belts must remain buckled during the event. Drivers must remain in the vehicle with helmet, seatbelt and eye protection on until notified by an official that it is safe to exit the vehicle. 6. Driver’s Meeting will be attended by drivers you well draw for your heats at this time. 7. Drivers door hits are illegal. If the hit is deemed by the official to be careless or intentional, you will be disqualified. If you use your driver’s door as a defense, we will not enforce the rules. Sandbagging is not tolerated and will be strictly enforced. Locking up the brakes prior to a hit for anything other than a driver’s door will be a cause for disqualification. The fans pay to see a show, put one on for them. 9. You will be given two minutes for restarts. We try to work with you if you are hung up. Hitters get more time than sandbaggers. 10. If your car is rolled over during the event after being pushed back over if the official deems the car and driver to be ok you may continue. 11. Drivers may be disqualified for: a. Hitting a car when that driver has waved off. b. Team driving well not be tolerated. c. Car condition (Anything that endangers participants.) d. Driver or Pit Crew Behavior. e. Not stopping when the red flag is out. (If you reposition your car during this time we will reposition you to the middle of the track.) 12. Every car will be given a flag. If you break off your flag you are done for that event. 13. Protest must be in writing and must be submitted by a driver only and must include a protest fee of $250.00 cash. Sorry no checks Vehicle Rules TRACK OFFICIALS WILL INSPECT ALL CARS BEFORE THE DERBY. THE TRUNK AND HOOD AREA OF ALL CARS WILL BE OPENED FOR INSPECTION. ALL CARS MUST PASS A TECHNICAL INSPECTION TO QUALIFY FOR DERBY. ALL WINNING CARS WILL BE REINSPECTED AT END OF EACH HEAT AND PRIOR TO LEAVING THE ARENA, AND BEFORE AWARDS. NO PIT CREW IS ALLOWED IN THE ARENA AREA DURING REINSPECTION OF WINNING CARS. DRIVERS CAN BE DISQUALIFIED IF THEY DO NOT COMPLY WITH DERBY RULES AND/OR THE OFFICIALS DECISION DURING THE TECH INSPECTION. ANY CAR FOUND TO BE ILLEGAL, WILL FORFEIT ALL WINNINGS FOR THAT NIGHT. ALL DECISIONS MADE BY OFFICIALS ARE FINAL!!! RULES FOR TECHNICAN INSPECTION “THIS IS WHAT YOU ARE ALLOWED TO DO TO PREPARE YOUR TRUCK.” Any added metal, welds, or rods/plates not specifically covered in the rules will have to be completely removed along with the surrounding metal. CUTTING YOUR TRUCK WILL WEAKEN YOUR TRUCK SO DON’T ADD ANYTHING THAT YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO ADD. 1. All trucks must be full size American made ½ ton or ¾ ton pickup. No Crew Cabs, Dually’s, 4X4’s, Military. Stock truck beds only, no utility boxes. 2. All glass, side chrome, door handles, flammable material must be removed. Glass cannot be rolled down, it must be removed. Rear seat must be removed. This must be done before bringing the vehicle to the event. There will be no building of vehicles in pit. (Please do them at home.) AFTER YOU HAVE PASSED INSPECTION YOU CANNOT WORK ON YOUR TRUCK. Please bring it ready to run. This includes changing tires once you have passed tech. Material sizes, unless specified in rule are as follows: Chains ½”, Welding filler 3/8” rebar or ¼”x 2” flat stock or ¼”x 2” x 2” angle. All are maximum sizes. 4. Truck # must be installed on both sides, and on roof. Min 18” lettering. Numbers Only!! 5. Gas tanks must be removed from stock location. New tank installed rear of cab passenger side. Chains, cable, or steel brackets must secure gas tanks. Tanks must be made of steel or similar quality. 5 gallons max tank. No plastic tank or plastic connectors. Tank must be installed within safety bars and covered. Holes must be made in the floorboard around the gas tank for possible spillage. 6. EXCEPTION: Because of newer model cars equipped with fuel injection systems that have to run with electrical fuel pumps, an electrical kill switch MUST be added and placed where an official can turn it off as a safety precaution. Drain holes must be in the floorboard for possible fuel spills, near the gas tank. 7. Batteries must be relocated to front passenger floorboard. Batteries must be covered and securely attached with bolts, chains or welded. No Plumbers tape. Batteries or battery boxes in no way may be attached to frame or body bolts. 8. Mandatory Safety Bars: Side bars from dash to back of cab. Cross bars, at dash, behind driver. Side bars and cross bars must be connected by welding or bolting. Side bars 6”x 3/8” material min. and cross bars minimum 3” pipe, or square tubing. Schedule #40 min. All 4 corners of safety cage must be welded to frame, 4” max attachment to frame. Front cage attachment not to exceed center of front axle. Mandatory 2” vertical bars from rear cross bar to roof with 6” plate connection on roof. Mandatory 2” min. bars (2) from top of cab angled down to front bed mount (2nd set of bolts back from cab) Rear cross bar may be mounted inside of bed no more than 3 inches from front of bed panel. 9. Mandatory: Weld or bolt windshield braces (2) from top of opening to bottom of opening to prevent hood from entering cab. 10. Bumper heights, front and rear, must be a maximum of 20” measured from the ground to bottom of bumper. Trucks must be raised or lowered to range this height. Spring spacers or bump stops welded to axel are accepted methods for lifting. Used trucks heights will be determined by officials. 11. Bumper may be welded to bumper brackets. Bumper brackets may be welded to frames. Bumper seams may be welded, no fillers or added material. 5mph bumper may be installed using 6”x ½” flat mounting plates on bumper max. 4”x 14”x ½” flat material with 2” gussets tying it to bumper or 2”x 4”x ¼” square tubing, channel. Brackets may be installed on the inside or outside of frame rail, not on top, bottom or stuffed in frame! Bumper brackets will be measured from bumper, anything over 14” needs to be removed, including stock brackets, front and rear bumpers. Barden type bumpers may need to be adjusted per official’s inspections. Trailer hitches and associated connections must be completely removed. No engine mounts forward of engine block. 4” max welding of mounts to frame horizontal and 4” max welding of mounts to frame vertical. Engine Cradles and distributor protectors are allowed as long as they do not add reinforcement. NEW – distributor protectors are allowed in Pickups. 13. Engine swaps OK and engine setback OK. If engine is moved back the maximum setback must not exceed beyond the factory firewall. (Example: valve covers must not be past factory firewall) NOTE: 12” X 12” hole may be cut in firewall for distributor clearance ONLY! Maximum of 4 motor mounts may be used, no mounts to rear of heads. Engine cradles allowed but must be welded or bolted to center cross member only, NOT to frame rail. No pulley protectors will be allowed. 14. Radiators, if used, must be in stock location, may be strapped or wired in, no welding. 15. All trucks must have an engine air cleaner or similar carburetor cover for fire safety. 16. Doors must be chained or welded, filler not to exceed 2” inch stock. Truck bed may be welded to cab along outside and top 12” max each side. 17. Tailgate must be welded or chained, 2 chains on bottom 2 on top, do not wrap around bumper, around rear frame ok, chain ¼” to ½” max. Tailgate must not be folded over. Bed Rails are to remain stock and not be folded over. Tailgate may be welded with 2” angle on the inside all the way around. 18. Steering, break away joint may be solid; all other steering from steering box to tie rods must be stock. 19. Hood must be chained or bolted, no welding. Mandatory four bolts or chains, no more no less, ¾” bolts max, chains ½” max. No frame contact. Max 6” gussets welded to body if bolted. Hole (12”) must be cut out of hood over carburetor for fire suppression 20. Seat belts are Mandatory. Front seat may be bolted or welded down. Bucket seat allowed. In no way may seat or seat belt be attached to truck frame. 21. CAB and BED body bolts may be up-graded to ½” bolts with 6” washers. 22. Spring clamps, Rear only, 4 per spring, 2” wide x ¼ “ thick max. See officials for any spring repairs. NO shortening of springs! 23. 16.5” maximum rim size. Any ply tire rating allowed. Valve stem protectors are ok. No aggressive style tread allowed on drive tires. NO screwing rim to tires. 24. Frame repairs allowed up to 12” total per frame rail. Frame repair must be more than 2” separated from Bumper mounts. Minimum repair 6”x ½” thick x 4” wide max size. Call for information. No cutting away body, No welding, No bolting to frame. Two bolts max may be used per chain. 26. It is illegal to weld body seams unless specified in rules 27. It is illegal to weld, paint, undercoat, mud, sand, grind, etc. any portion of car’s frame unless specified in rules. Used cars must have frame washed of debris (dirt) from prior derbies. DRIVER AND VEHICLE OPTIONS (NOT REQUIRED BUT RECOMMENDED) 1. Goggles and Gloves are highly recommended for driver. 2. PADDED DRIVER’S COMPARTMENT AND DOOR IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. 3. Floor shifter O.K. Mounted to floor OR transmission ONLY not both. 4. Locked rear end 5. Radiator Fan (electric fan O.K.) 6. Hand throttle 7. Tranny ultra bell housing O.K. in no way can housing be attached to frame, body, or cage. 8. Transmission coolers may be placed inside vehicle, but MUST be covered or in a ice chest. Transmission cooler box cannot be attached to frame or covering body bolts. 9. Only (1) AUTOMOTIVE A/C condenser allowed in front of radiator bolted to radiator support only. No A/C condensers out of tractors. 10. Mud screen allowed in front of driver only. 11. Exhaust may be diverted through the hood AKA "ZOOMIES". 12. SAFETY: Drivers door may have iron on outside with no width limit but must not be more than 3 inches past edge of adjacent panel and must be tapered at both ends. 13. ¼” Thick plate under drivers compartment floor OK but MUST NOT be welded or bolted to frame.
