April was a great month with a lot of wonderful activities and events for our students. We have really
great students and it has been fun and inspiring to see them with all they are involved in. The month of
May will go extremely quick and is just about as busy.
We have several concerts with great singers and musicians that will take place to end the year which are
excellent if you haven’t had the opportunity to attend one. Our choir, bands, and orchestra received
steller ratings at Colorado West! In addition, we have our Fruita Graduation ceremony on May 12 th, at
7:00 pm. It is definitely exciting to see our former freshmen walk across the stage to receive their diplomas and continue on their path to success. The following day, May 13 th, there is no school for both FMHS
and Fruita 8/9 students as in past years. On May 15th, we have our annual Grill-n-Chill where we get to
hang out with our students in the afternoon and participate in various planned fun activities.
In the last week of school, we have finals on the 19th and 20th. It will be the same schedule that we had at
the end of first semester. Students will be dismissed on Wednesday, May 20 th at 10:50 after their last final. The last ten minutes of time will be spent cleaning out lockers. Students will show teachers their
lockers before they leave to ensure that it is checked off as cleaned out. Those students who do not clean
out lockers or who damage a locker will be assessed a $10 fee. Busses will run the normal time that day
for those students who stay until the end of the day.
For those of you wanting to get a jump on dates for next year, we will be doing check-in on July 22nd
and July 23rd. Those students who have last names A-K will check in on July 22nd, and those students
who have last names L-Z will check in on July 23rd. Check in times for both days are from 10:30-3:30.
The first day of school starts August 3rd.
Please see the school web-site for specifics on all activities and events remaining for the year. I would like
to thank you for all the hard work that you put in with your students. It has been a pleasure to work with
them throughout the year. I look forward to another wonderful year next year.
Have a great summer!
Sincerely,
Jason Plantiko

Preventing the “Summer Slide”
According to the National Summer Learning Association, all students who do not
participate in educational activities over the summer will experience learning loss. Lack of
access to reading materials is one of the biggest contributors to what is dubbed the
“Summer Slide.” Here are some tips to help reduce summertime lapse:
Expect your kids to read every single day this summer. You could start a family book club, turn amount of
reading into a friendly competition between siblings, or participate in the public library’s summer reading
program.
Plan to visit local educational places (such as museums and libraries) or attend local events that would have
educational benefits. WCCC has summer camps available for youth.
If you’re going on a vacation, ask your child to plan a part of the trip using maps, brochures,
budgeting, etc.
Use online games or apps to practice math and foreign language skills.
Require a daily balance between fun outdoors, screen time, and reading time. Everything in
moderation will help kids to make the most of their summer.

VISITOR PROCEDURES - PARENTS/GUARDIANS VISITATION
The Fruita 8/9 School has a large student body and realizes that there are times when parents/guardians may need to
contact a student during the day on an informal or non-emergency basis. To maintain security within the school, we
request that all parents/guardians report to the Main Office and show proper identification (this name must appear as
a contact on the student’s record) to request contact with their student. The student will then be summoned from his/
her class. Visitors shall be required to check in at the Main Office and show proper identification and reason for being
at the school and shall wear nametags identifying them as visitors (Board Policy ECA/ECAB).
NO STUDENT VISITORS ARE ALLOWED DURING THE SCHOOL DAY
LEAVING CAMPUS FOR LUNCH
To: Parents and Students
It is required to send your student with a written note giving permission to leave campus for lunch.
We ask that you provide student’s name, person picking up student, date and time. Note needs to be present
the same day of lunch outing. The person picking up student is required to come to the office and sign student in/out. Also
note that when leaving for lunch, only their lunch wave will be excused. This is only for your student’s safety and for our
Secretary to keep track of attendance. Please no phone calls regarding permission to leave campus.
Health

WATER FOR LIFE CELEBRATION!!!
Thank you, Fruita Community, for helping us to not only reach, but DOUBLE our fundraising goal!
We had pledged to raise $1,500 to enable School #5 in South Sudan to have the remaining funds
needed to build a well for clean water for their students. Through YOUR generosity, we raised
$3,250 so will be able to support one of the other seven schools there towards building another
well. Thank you families of Fruita 8/9!!! Thank you, Enzo’s Pizzeria and Italian Café and Hot Tomato Café, for
your partnership and generous donations totaling $1,352 to our cause. Thank you for empowering our
students to make a difference in the lives of children in Africa.
