FROM THE FACILITATOR
Dear Parents and Community,
It is a tall order to be a Steiner teacher;we are expected to be wise and good
humoured beyond our years, not to mention
skilled in all areas and having infinite
patience. Steiner considered the role of
education to be central to the task of
social renewal and human evolution, placing
enormous responsibility onto teachers for
learning
and
self-development.
Anthroposophy, the philosophical backdrop
to the educational principles, is a limitless
field that can open up great vistas to the
earnest and dedicated;- it has a method of
disciplined observation, humble and
reverential inquiry into all aspects of
culture.
This Friday, all staff will participate in a
professional development day to delve
deeper into the art of teaching our
curriculum, as well as to participate in
artistic development for soul enrichment.
We hope that your day with your children
will be as fulfilling as our day of learning.

lessons at hand. Similarly, being on time to
pick-up is essential; - endings being as
important as beginnings. Children, even
though collected by parents are still the
responsibility of the teachers and the
school while they are on school grounds; regarding the school’s “limits” to behaviour
at pickup is essential. Please do not permit
your children to tear around, play with balls
particularly in crowded areas, wrestle or
climb trees. The carpark area too, can be a
dangerous place for children if they are
not supervised. If your children play at the
sandpit playground, please ensure that you
are keeping an eye on them.

This term, as a school, we are
concentrating on working better with time
and timetables; -punctuality. I would ask all
parents to help us in this task by bringing
their children to school by the commencing
time for classes. It is better to be at least
10 minutes earlier to give children a chance

FROM THE TEACHERS
Class 5/6
In Year 5 and 6 we have explored the origin
of written language in Mesopotamia, ‘The
Land Between Two Rivers’. Later in Term 1
we moved into the epoch of Ancient Greecethe Year 5’s focusing on Myths and Legends
and Botany- whilst the Year 6’s have been
focusing on Greek history and the
development of government in the various
Greek city states.

phrases have seeped into our daily
expressions and vocabulary. As part of this
series the students had to write their own
Greek Myth, some of which can be found on
our class website. (see below)
Both year levels have been learning the
Greek alphabet and how to write ancient
Greek words using this script. Many of our
weekly spelling lists have been based on
English vocabulary with Greek roots. Year 6’s
are made aware of the need to learn Greek
letters for secondary Maths. The first
important symbol they learn is Pi, pronounced
‘pea’ in Greek, but ‘pie’ Maths. They
memorise that Pi is a relationship of the
length of the circumference of a circle to its
diameter.
Soon we will present a play based on the
Greek god, Prometheus, and how the Greeks
tried to come to terms with their growing
confidence in Science and Technology; the
use of fire in this tale is a metaphor for
human enlightenment.
The Greeks gave
humanity a new perspective on the cosmos
and developed the study of the natural world
in more systematic and organised ways,
developing
the
studies
of
Music,
Architecture,
Philosophy,
Oratory,
Literature, Theatre, Politics, Warfare,
Government, Science and Technology.
The Greeks learned to trust themselves as
capable of making sense of the world and
nature, and this is why Year 5 study Botany
with the attitude of curious Greeks.

As part of their Greek studies on botany we
recently travelled to the Queenscliff Marine
and Freshwater Study Centre and explored
the various eco-systems found along our
coast and water ways. The students were
enthusiastic and it was pleasing to witness
the excellent knowledge displayed by our
students. Steiner kids certainly know their
natural world, and I was proud of their
contributions to the lessons and their
excellent behaviour.

Open Day Preparation - can anyone help?
Thankyou to the lovely parents who have
offered to help me set up for Open Day on
Tuesday afternoon — if anyone else gets to
pickup a little early— please do pop your
head in the Wetlands door; any help is
gratefully accepted! It would also be great
to have a couple of reps from the Parent
Community to welcome people, share their
experience of the school from a Parent’s
perspective, and answer questions on the
day.
Baked goods on the Wednesday
morning would also be gratefully received—
baking yummy goodies with love is one of
the things we do best! Thank you all for

and wisdom, ending the day with a Give Away
Ceremony. Although there will be a format

be followed. I will be guided by spirit to

strict rundown of the day. I completely trust
in the Universe to add or take what is
