S.O.N.S. VOLUNTEERS’ PICNIC Our annual Volunteers’ picnic was held on Monday August 5th at the Lawrence Park Fishing Club. One hundred and twenty eight S.O.N.S. volunteers and guests were in attendance. Ron Lubak worked his usual magic by organizing and managing a great picnic. Trawka’s Market provided some great food. Mary Kissell, Linda and Terry Pfeffer, Char Markiewicz and Maureen Herbst helped out serving the food. Bob Zawadzki brought in chests full of pop. Frank and Elaine Kuzma passed out name tags to the guests. Alma Jean Skrypzak and Sandy Brown passed gifts to all of the attendees. All of our volunteers were given a Perry 200 commemoration S.O.N.S. T shirt ( See Picture Below), the ladies were given a small tray and a book from Dave Frew’s Lake Erie Quadrangle series and all of the kids got some goodies too. Mike and Donna Felege organized and sold door prize raffle tickets. Our officers, directors, and volunteers work the year around to further the goals of the S.O.N.S. They worked at 30 scheduled events working more than 3000 hours. Many of our volunteers went above and beyond for the club. Larry Lipinski is a prime example of the dedication and generosity exhibited by most of our volunteers. He participated in over 54 events! Larry led the pack of our crew followed by Gerry Vollentine, Jack Klapthor, Rich Smith, Chuck Miller, Bill Henderson, Jim Mattson, Ralph Corvaglia, Jack Bock, Ron Bolash, Bob David, Mike Felege, Rich Brine, Charlene Markiewicz, Cas Haraburda, Joe Springer, Don Tombaugh, Ray Halt, Ken Minns, Ralph Friend, John Krupinski, Rich Mando, Buddy Yurcak, Jeremy Figal and Ron Lubak who all participated in ten or more of our activities. These outstanding individuals were awarded a S.O.N.S. fishing vest for their work and dedication. To see a set of pictures taken at the volunteers’ picnic go to our web page sonsoflakeerie.org. SPECIAL PERRY 200 S.O.N.S. T-SHIRT Creative Imprints designed a great piece of artwork which is imprinted on the back of the T-shirt that was given to each one of our volunteers at the picnic. NOTE: IF YOU HAVE VOLUNTEERED AND DID NOT GET A T-SHIRT AT THE PICNIC, YOU MAY GET ONE AT OUR SEPTEMBER 23rd GENERAL MEETING. S.O.N.S. I would like to borrow and scan them for my slide presentations. The HAB, which is comprised of cyanobacteria, has the appearance of brightly colored latex paint floating on the surface of the water and is most noticeable in calm backwater areas such as coves and marinas. “On July 31, DEP collected samples to determine that a Harmful Algae Bloom has taken place,” DEP Northwest Regional Director Kelly Burch said. “Boaters and bucket fisherman are advised to avoid contact with the algae where it occurs in the near shore.” A FRIEND RECORD OF MEMBERSHIP Name Address City Renew New ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________ Phone “It is very important to keep out of areas that are visibly in bloom,” Director of the Erie County Department of Health Andrew Glass said. “We are working closely with the DEP as the situation occurs.” Additional cyanobacteria blooms may occur throughout the remainder of the summer, depending on environmental conditions. DEP will continue to monitor this situation as it develops. The heaviest blooms do not appear to be affecting the open waters of the bay. HABs have not been detected in Lake Erie that would affect the bathing beaches on Presque Isle State Park. 2013 _______________________________________________________________________ _________________________________ $5.00 ADULT State Date ___________ Zip ________________ _______________________________ $4.00 SR. Last reminder, S.O.N.S. members who do not win, but have entered a fish, will be eligible for a consolation drawing which will be held at our September General Membership Meeting. For more information and an updated leader board, visit our web page at sonsoflakeerie.org. Neil Conaway shows off his 33 inch Steelhead that he caught off the point in 60 feet of water on July 3 using a multi colored NK 28. The fish was measured at the East End Angler Bait Shop. It is the longest steelhead entered as of August 12th. POTENTIAL FISHING OPPORTUNITY Crews and equipment from Lake Shore Towing are installing over 900 ft. of sheet piling around the former GAF property at the foot of Sassafras St. When the GAF development is completed there is a potential that this improvement could provide more public access for the bucket fishermen. Cyanobacteria are a natural part of the ecosystem that can bloom in warm, calm, nutrient-rich waters. While most algae blooms are harmless, some cyanobacteria blooms can lead to fish kills and have been known to harm pets and livestock. The public is advised to avoid contact with any visible surface scrums or films and should rinse thoroughly if contact occurs. Pets and livestock should not be allowed to drink from water with visible surface blooms. There is little risk to healthy recreational water users where visible surface scums are not present. TODAY! Center has died. The fish was apparently suffering from an apparent physical problem which was evident by its failure to maintain a normal growth cycle. It had been felt that his food was being hogged by its female tank mate. They were separated but still it did not survive. On another note there is a rumor circulating that a sturgeon was caught off of one of the channel piers. What have you heard?
