VICE-PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE – HAZEL HOLM
As our new President is away on holidays, I have taken the helm for a few weeks. So watch out 
First of all, Welcome aboard new Board Members! We had a Board orientation session last month, and
everyone has a ‘job’ on a committee. As the Phoning Committee convener, I would like to Thank all my
phoners for calling our Members for each important occasion. Special Thanks also to everyone for the
donations of baking and money. We made $352.60 and that’s clear profit for our Club, folks! Special thanks
to our gals at the Bake table: Zena, Linda and Hazel.
Mayor Nenshi has proclaimed the week of June 1 – 7th as SENIORS’ WEEK 2015! It is an
opportunity to honor our seniors for their many contributions in our City! There are many exciting things
happening this week, so be sure to pick up a brochure listing all the events you can participate in.
Finally, the Executive, Board and Staff express deepest regrets to Carol, the Executive Assistant,
during this sad time with the loss of her beloved dad. Take good care all, and have a safe summer. Hazel

~ From the Pen of the Executive Director ~
Welcome to Summer (almost). Warmer weather will soon be upon us. Thank you everyone who volunteered,
supported, and donated to the 2nd Annual Ethnic Food Fair & White Elephant Sale. All proceeds from food sales have
been designated to Nepal ($700). About $550 was raised from the “Changes’ clothing donations, the Jewellery corner,
treasures & collectibles, and a shuffleboard table sold too!
Our Membership has climbed to 387 and we have a reduced rate for new members. You can invite a friend
along to join for $15 for the rest of the year. This will help us reach the 400 mark. 
There are so many wonderful events happening at the Club during the Summer, so come on in, sign up for
something new, a trip or two, or just drop in for some socialization. There is always someone around to engage in
friendly conversation and a cup of java. The tea is always on for us ‘tea’ grannies.
Thank you ALL Volunteers for your hard work in and around the Club. Take time to check out our garden
boxes, the front perennial beds ~ Special thanks to our Thursday Bridge group for taking time to enhance the front
perennial garden. My hat goes off to you all.  Thanks to all who donated the beautiful plant as well. Thanks again!
We have rented out a total of 4 ½ boxes ~ first to our Members and lastly to the Killarney-Glengarry
Community Association. (KGCA had a wait list at their garden site). Community engagement is one of the FCSS (our
City funder!) priorities. This is our 4th year of gardening and thanks to John Bailey and crew, we have 10 beds!
Once again you are in for a delightful surprise as the Alexander Ferguson Elementary children from the Grade
4 & 5 class present a ‘summer’ treat for all Lunch Bunch attendees. Come on out for the last one‘til Fall!
We will be celebrating our Seniors’ contributions to our Club by hosting a ‘VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION
LUNCHEON’ on Wednesday, June 24th. A sign sheet is up on the Volunteer board, and if you have volunteered this
year, we would love to Honor you…so please sign up soon. Psst! We want all those ‘hidden hours’ too.
In closing, I would like to dedicate a Father’s Day poem to my Executive Assistant, Carol Haika.
“My Dad”
My father is a man like no other. He gave me life, nurtured me, taught me, dressed me, fought for me, held me,
shouted at me, kissed me, but most importantly he loved me unconditionally. There are not enough words I can
say to describe just how important my father was to me, and what a powerful influence he continues to be.
I LOVE YOU DAD.” ~Author Unknown ~
Carol, my deepest condolences to you and your family with respect to the passing of your beloved Dad.
Peace be with you.
Respectfully yours, Marjorie Lucian, the Executive Director

Hearing Troubles and Blue Rodeo:
The other day Marjorie reminded me that Good Companions’
Stampede Hoedown is not that far away, and asked if I had
any article ideas that would help people get in the mood for a
foot-stompin’ good time.
While looking for something to help me segue between
hearing challenges and the Stampede I searched the Internet
for “hearing loss and rodeo.” Interestingly, up came a story
about Blue Rodeo, one of Canada’s most successful bands
who’ve been touring for over 3 decades.
You may recognize the names, Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor,
two founding band members who penned many of their hits,
songs like Diamond Mine, Til I Am Myself Again, Hasn’t Hit
Me Yet and a host of others that have earned them 11 Juno’s
over their career, becoming Officers of the Order of Canada
in 2013 and in 2014, the Governor General’s Performing Arts
Award, the highest honour a performing artist can achieve in Canada. Turns out, all has not been
wine and roses for this talented and very successful band.
Years of loud, live stage shows and no proper hearing protection have left Greg Keelor with real
hearing difficulties. “We’re probably seeing the result of that now,” Jim Cuddy said in an interview
with Brad Wheeler of the Globe and Mail in November, 2013, “recalling concerts that left ears ringing
and probably figured in Keelor’s current hearing problems.”
Who knew that such success could have such a down-side for someone. Although the band is still
writing songs and recording, Greg Keelor no longer plays live, because his hearing difficulties make
live electric guitar playing very difficult.
Just goes to show you, hearing loss does not discriminate between the famous and the rest of us.
While we’re stompin’, hootin’ and hollerin’ at this year’s Good Companions’ Stampede Hoedown, let’s
be sure to be kind to our ears. After all, they have to last us a lifetime.
For all your hearing needs, please continue to rely on us at Audia Hearing Care Centre
to make your life better through regular hearing health check-ups and great hearing aid
products.
We look forward to seeing you at the Hoedown. YAAAA-HOOO!!
