The Board will strive to diligently serve the Club and work with our Executive
Director, Marjorie Lucian, and her staff: Carol Haika, Executive Assistant and
Social Convener, and Salmon Nanlohy, IT and Office Assistant.

I’d rather have roses on my table,
than diamonds on my neck. ~ Emma Goldman ~
FROM THE PEN OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Welcome to May….already! There are some exciting events
happening this month. Check out our extensive calendar to see if anything
suits your fancy! What can I say – Thanks to everyone who supported our
huge fundraiser in April. The final figures are still coming in, but I can
honestly say we have almost reached our goal noted in the April
‘Companion’ newsletter! $2,900+ and counting!! The post-sales are
catching on – so if you are looking for a lovely outfit, we still have lots of
stuff to sell! Special thanks to Barb, owner of ‘Changes’ consignment store
in Marda Loop for the enormous amount of high-end designer clothing.
We plan to ‘donate’ the rest to a NW senior’s club.
Gardening season is upon us. Ann Smith and Hannelore Hepp have
been very busy cleaning out the two floral beds. Julie Bain has donated
some perennials as well. Thanks, gals! Anyone interested in renting a
garden box? Come to the office and we’ll set you up! Honorary Member
John Bailey is in the process of building two new boxes, and the premium
soil has arrived. We are looking for some ‘new’ perennials….drop by with
a plant or two to enhance our community gardens. Just think of all the
volunteer hours you can accumulate by doing so!
Membership now stands at 379 and counting!! Be sure to invite a
friend along, try something new, and join!
Have a Happy Mother’s Day ~ Be sure to take time to be with those
who have made a difference in your lives! Be it…..Mothers, Grandmothers,
Great-Grandmothers, Step-Moms, and all the other Motherly women who
love you. 
God Bless.
Respectfully yours, Marjorie J. Lucian, Executive Director

A Smile From Dr. Patricia’s Desk:
I guess if you are King you can afford to indulge your
vanity. For the rest of us poor normal folk, we can be
glad technology has evolved from the days of King
John VI of Portugal. Enjoy.
Written by Andrew Masterson| Published in the Sydney Morning Herald
on April 29, 2015
In 1819, a Londoner called Frederick Rein was recognised throughout Europe as the go-to guy
when it came to cutting-edge technology to assist the hard of hearing.
There was no doubt about it: Rein made the finest ear-trumpets in the world. Thus, he was
honoured, but perhaps not surprised, to be summoned to the palace of King John VI of Portugal to
render assistance to the monarch, whose hearing was fading.
The commission was a challenge. An ordinary ear-trumpet, half a metre long and held in the hand,
was out of the question. A monarch could not appear defective, even if he was.
Rein thus commissioned the construction of an elaborately carved chair, featuring wide-gobbed (i.e.
mouths wide open) lion heads on the arms. These were, in fact, cunningly disguised trumpets, which
funnelled sound through concealed tubes that ran up the back of the chair and exited close to the
royal ears.
Frederick Rein's business was hugely successful, and continued long after its founder's death.
Although the designs changed, generally becoming smaller, it's worth noting that when it closed in
1963 the company was still essentially making ear-trumpets.
Thankfully, we can leave the ear trumpets with the marching band from now on.
For all your hearing needs, please continue to rely on us at Audia Hearing Care Centre
to make your life better through regular hearing health check-ups and great hearing aid
products.
We look forward to seeing you.

CARD CONVENER’S CORNER
Once again I must thank all of you who came through for me. Every
month when I write the cards I wonder if I will have enough for next month. But
miraculously cards appear, thanks to all of you who bring them in. I really
appreciate it and it makes my job much easier. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
The big event last month was the Rummage Sale. It was a huge success. We
almost made our target, a record amount, and the nice thing about it was most of it
came from outside people, not just from the Members. Lots more stuff. Lots more
people. (The Good Companions’ big Rummage Sale is becoming known) and
especially LOTS MORE VOLUNTEERS. It is always very hard work, sorting and
pricing, setting it all up and then clearing it all up afterwards. There is no way it
would succeed without you all. So a BIG THANK YOU to all of you as well.
Remember to record all those hours.
Happy Mother’s Day ~ Enjoy.

Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. Ultraviolet
(UV) radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer. UV damage can also
cause wrinkles and blotches or spots on your skin. The good news is that skin
cancer can be prevented, and it can almost always be cured when it’s found and
treated early before it spreads to other parts of the body.
There are three types of skin cancers. Two types, basal cell carcinoma and
squamous cell carcinoma, grow slowly and rarely spread to other parts of the
body. These types of cancer are found mostly on parts of the skin exposed to the
sun, like the head, face, neck, hands, and arms, but can happen anywhere on your
body. The third and most dangerous type of skin cancer is melanoma. It is rarer
than the other types, but can spread to other organs and be deadly.
Keep Your Skin Healthy With Simple Steps
• Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is when the sun's rays are
strongest. Don't be fooled by cloudy skies. The sun's rays can go through clouds.
You can also get sunburned if you are in water, so be careful when you are in a
pool, lake, or the ocean.
• Use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Put the sunscreen on 15-30 minutes
before you go outside and reapply sunscreen every 2 hours and after you swim or
sweat.
• Cover up with long sleeves and a hat. A hat with a wide brim can shade your
neck, ears, eyes, and head. Look for sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of
the sun's rays.
• Check your skin once a month for changes. Skin cancer is rarely painful. Look
for changes such as a new growth, a sore that doesn't heal, or a bleeding mole.
Also check moles and birthmarks for changes in size, shape, color or irregular
borders.
