Greenfield-‐Central High School Mentor-‐Protégé Enhancement Program: General Information PURPOSE The Mentor/Protégé Enhancement Program at Greenfield-‐Central High School provides an opportunity for senior students qualifying for the gifted/talented student pool (juniors taking upper-‐level English courses) to research an area of interest in depth and with intensity beyond the traditional school curriculum. A mentor, an adult from the community with expertise in the shared field of interest, will provide the bridge for the student to reach significant levels of challenge and of accomplishment. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The steps for participation in the Mentor/Protégé Program include a protégé application and teacher recommendation letters submitted in the spring semester of the student’s junior year. Final selection for the program follows a formal interview conducted by members of the high school gifted/talented committee and school administrators. The interview gives a student an opportunity to show his/her qualifications, goals, and objectives to participate in this capstone learning venture. Once the committee has selected the participants, the students will be matched with mentors who are willing to share their expertise in the field of mutual interest. Goals and responsibilities, including time schedules, will be established by the mentor and protégé on the contract form. This form will be finalized and signed by the mentor, protégé, coordinator, and parents. The program’s coordinator will act as a liaison the mentor and protégé and will continuously evaluate the program and its components to assure the best possible learning experience. An attachment to the student’s (protégé’s) transcript will describe the noncredit mentorship experience. PROGRAM GOALS Cognitive: 1.
