Steve the foresight Geneva Golf & Country Club Newsletter April May 2015 2014 A Note from Your New Assistant Pro Hello, My name is Travis Kruse. I grew up in the small town of Colesburg, IA on a golf course that my parents have managed for the past 22 years. Growing up in the golf business it was a clear choice of what I wanted to do as I got older. Since graduating high school, I have worked at various courses such as Blue Top Ridge and Ellis Golf Course. At Ellis, the Head Golf Professional at the time was Dustin Miller, he was very influential in getting me started into the “Pro-side” of things as opposed to the maintenance side. During the last couple of months of my time at Ellis I started the process of getting registered into the PGA program! In 2009 I met my wife, Jessica, and we have been married since April 2010. In the winter of 2010, I had received a job with the maintenance crew at Alaqua Country Club in Orlando, Florida. This was a great experience, however it just solidified that I wanted to be on the pro-side of things. After coming back to Iowa the following year I had taken over the Assistant Manager position at my home course, Lone Pine Country Club. At Lone Pine I was in charge of Tournament Operations and also assisted in the processes that come with the food and beverage industry. In January 2012 my wife and I welcomed our daughter, Giulliana. I continued to work at Lone Pine for the next two seasons until we moved to Germany in October later that year. After a trial visit to Germany in the Spring of 2012, I met with Head Professional David Thomas at Golfpark Gut Huehnerhof, whom luckily was from Australia and spoke English! David showed me the way to the PGA Apprentice Program through the PGA of Germany. This was not an easy street however. After an extensive 12 month program to learn the German language, unfortunately I was unable to complete the PGA program in Germany. In January 2013, our daughter was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. After her diagnosis we moved back to the states and began treatments in Iowa City. Thankfully to a rigorous chemotherapy program she has been cancer-free for the past eight months! Also just this past December we welcomed our son, Max, to the world. I am extremely thankful to be offered this position and look forward to meeting everybody at Geneva and learning a great deal from Steve! It has been great to have some sunshine and warmer days after the winter we’ve had! I love the spring and all that comes with it. I am very excited to see all of you with your families for our Easter brunch, and we have a great menu planned for you. We always enjoy being a part of your holiday celebrations. This month marks one year that I’ve been Geneva’s Executive Chef, and it was a great year! I have a great team of culinary staff who are very dedicated to the members of Geneva, and I couldn’t ask for a better crew. With that being said, I’d like to announce that I have decided to hire Michael Keller as my Sous Chef. Michael is a great asset to our team, and we are all very excited for him. If you’ve never met him, please introduce yourself the next time you see him out at the club! As we move into spring and summer, I look forward to seeing you out on the course and at the clubhouse!
