Letters are also sent home with students with negative lunch balances on a daily basis. •Those messages can sometimes go into your junk folder as they are seen by many email systems as spam. • Please keep an eye out for these reminders and if one does go into your junk folder, mark it as safe to ensure future delivery of the messages. Glen Grove Newsletter Office (847)998-5030 Health Office (847)998-5031 From The Principal’s Desk Dear Glen Grove Families, Springtime is here, and besides warmer weather, beautiful blooms, and baseball’s first pitch, the season brings those of us who work in schools a frenzied pace as we begin to formally plan for next year while continuing to engage children in the important learning that must be mastered this year. As we look ahead to this final stretch – hard to believe we’ve only nine weeks left – here are some things on which we will be focusing. One of our most important responsibilities at the end of the school year is the important work of assigning students to classes. It is the belief of Glenview District 34 and Glen Grove School that children receive the most benefit from their educational experience when in a balanced classroom setting. The following criteria is influential in creating this setting: • • • • • • Classes will be balanced by gender across a grade level Class size will be balanced across a grade level Classes will be balanced by program needs Classes will be balanced by academic abilities and achievement Classes will be balanced by social-emotional needs Classes will be balanced by student leadership skills, work habits, and general behavior Part of the placement process entails eliciting parental input, as well. You will soon have the opportunity to provide us with information that can inform classroom assignments by completing a Parent Input Form. Please use this form to indicate factors you wish the Placement Team to consider when determining class assignments for your child. Completing the input form is optional, as you may feel your child’s current teacher has enough information to determine the best placement for your child. All students, with or without written parent input, will be given equal time and consideration in the placement process. So, please look for detailed information regarding all aspects of our placement process. This information, along with the Parent Input Form, will be going home to second and third grade families on April 24. Creating smooth transitions for our students is one of our primary goals, and careful, thoughtful attention to placement is one way to accomplish this. We will also be gearing up for a second round of PARCC, the new State accountability assessment that replaces the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT). As you may recall, PARCC designed its system to include multipart testing, with two required components: the Performance Based Assessment (PBA) and the End of Year Assessment (EOY). The PBA was given in March, and the EOY must be administered in late spring, once 90% of the school year has been completed. The EOY will be focused on “innovative, short-answer questions and items to measure concepts and skills. Students will demonstrate comprehension of literary and informational texts and give definitions of words based on their reading of texts, rather than on memorization. They will also show understanding of mathematical concepts, procedures and short applications.” We will be administering the PARCC to all of our third, fourth, and fifth graders between the dates of April 27 and May 1. Students will be taking three separate assessments – two in mathematics and one in English language arts. Your child will only be testing on specific dates and times during this window, so look for communications from teachers and/or teams for your child’s testing schedule. Spring assessments also include the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) measure of academic progress that will occur between May 19 and May 29. This computerized assessment tool provides an individualized look at your child’s development in reading, mathematics, and language usage. Please note that NWEA reports will be sent home at the end of the school year, whereas PARCC results are not expected until the fall on next year. Please remember that although academic assessment results are important to all of us, this data alone does not capture all that makes up our school environment. Besides math and reading goals, we strive to nurture social and emotional awareness and skills, as well. As the school year gets closer to ending, we will take some time to reflect on the effectiveness of the Glen Grove Student Handbook in making behavior expectations explicit to all, and on the self-reflection and problem-solving strategies we’ve used to help students make responsible decisions. Finally, teachers piloting the Second Steps Program will evaluate its effectiveness in teaching students how to understand and manage their emotions, control their reactions, and be aware of the feelings of others – aspects of children’s development we try to foster as carefully and intentionally as their academic development. Finally, I hope the themes of renewal, new beginnings, and optimism that characterize springtime surround you this season and always! Respectfully, ! Glen Grove Newsletter Office (847)998-5030 Health Office (847)998-5031 Physical Education News Wow! We can’t believe that we are already in the third trimester. Just a few months of school left. Our Jump Rope for Heart was a huge success. This year we raised a grand total of $18,201. This is the highest amount that Glen Grove has ever donated to the American Heart Association, and we have been doing the Jump Rope for Heart event since 2004. Thank you to all the families that donated and the students that participated in the Jump Rope for Heart event. In Physical Education class, we just finished up our gymnastics unit. Students used the skills they learned to put together a routine that they performed for the teacher. Students’ gymnastics sheets are located on the student’s iPads, if you are interested in seeing what skills they learned, what was in their routine, or what grade they received on their routine. After spring break, our upcoming units in PE will be Bowling and Dance. Students will work on the underhand throwing/rolling motion while aiming at a target (bowling pins) in the bowling unit. In the Dance unit, students will be working on following steps in rhythm while learning some line and folk dances. Weather permitting, we plan on going outside for the following units: Ultimate Frisbee, Track and Field, Golf, and Kickball/Softball. The American Heart Association offers information for living a healthy life. It is a program called My Life Check. There are seven steps to living a healthy life. They are: get active, check your cholesterol, eat better, manage your blood pressure, lose weight, reduce your blood sugar and stop smoking. They offer a free heart score at: http:// www.heart.org/MyLifeCheck. ! Field Day is Tuesday, June 9th, 2015 from approximately 12:00 - 2:30 pm. The rain date for field day is Wednesday, June 10th. Field day is when all the students from Glen Grove will be participating in a variety of activities, such as hand-off tag, shooting baskets and running some relay races. We are looking for parent volunteers to help us run this fun and exciting day. Each Gutman book a student reads (any time during this school year) earns him or her a Gutman Gator Greenback. A Greenback allows the student to enter a raffle. There is no limit to the number of times a student can enter (unless he/she has read every book Dan Gutman has written). Each grade level has a raffle box. Students will be given the Greenback from their classroom teacher and asked to deposit them in the grade level boxes in the library. On Friday, May 16th Mrs. Funke will be pulling the Gutman Gator Greenbacks at lunchtime in the cafeteria for each grade level. Students whose names are pulled will win signed books and posters. The library is also having two essay contests. The first is lunch with the author. Nine lucky students (three from each grade level) will have the opportunity to eat their lunch with Dan Gutman, the day he is visiting. The second opportunity is a writers’ workshop with the author. 30 budding writers (10 from each grade level) will get to learn from the New York best-seller author! Anyone can write and submit an essay. All winning entries will be chosen randomly. I am so excited about these special events for our students. We have two order forms: one for Mr. Gutman’s books and the second for our t-shirt design contest. The book order form is included in this newsletter (or with the link above). It is due in the library by April 27th. The Book Stall will be processing orders the day of the visit (May 19th) and students will take home the books then. Please make sure to fill out the personalization line on the form. If it is not filled out, books will just be signed. The second order for the t-shirt design celebrating the visit will be due by Friday, April 24th. It will be online at Custom Ink. There will be a separate note coming home with the details. If you don’t have Internet at home or want to pay cash, please contact the library for a paper order form. They are also due on April 24th. Health Office (847)998-5031 Homework and Vacation The following are the Extended Absence Homework Policy guidelines that we have put into place to provide the framework for work that needs to be completed because of an extended absence. Strong school attendance is a critical component to a student's success in school and the importance of good attendance is constantly stressed at Glen Grove. While we value the experiences children receive from visiting other places and spending time with family members afar, it is strongly advised that families schedule trips and vacations within school holiday periods, so as not to impact a studentʼs attendance at school. If your child will be out of school for an extended vacation, notify the teacher and the health office, in writing, in advance of the absence. Homework or make-up work is not provided in advance for extended vacations. It is expected that your child will keep a journal of the trip and complete an independent reading log to be turned in upon his/ her return to school. Please know that teachers will work to provide some of the learning opportunities and work that will be missed upon return. However, the teachers are not able to recreate the classroom environment, so please understand that there may be experiences or learning situations that cannot be recreated or adapted. Upon return, the teachers will work to create manageable assignments and deadlines for core assignments, but it will be the studentʼs responsibility to make-up the work. Note: If a student experiences an extended absence for medical reasons, there is the option to pursue eligibility for homebound instruction during that absence. Important Car Pick-Up Information If you are picking your student up in the car pick-up lane, please remain in your vehicle until your child joins you in your car. This lane is a designated pick-up/dropoff zone NOT to be used for long or short-term parking. Consistently adhering to procedures for dropping-off and picking-up children will help us meet our goal of providing the safest most efficient environment during Glen Grove Newsletter Office (847)998-5030 Outdoor Recess Procedures The benefits of an outdoor recess are many and Glen Grove makes every effort to see that all of our students go outdoors every day. Children are able to exercise, socialize and experience a variety of activities with friends and this all helps to enhance their learning experience. Starting the afternoon after a time of fresh air definitely improves learning, alertness and overall productivity. Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for outdoor play. In cold weather boots, mittens or gloves, warm jackets, snow pants, hats and scarves are a must. If your child wears boots to school, please remember to send in shoes for them to use during physical education. The wind chill factor must be ten or below or it must be too wet or raining before we cancel outdoor recess. The children are out approximately 20 minutes. Please note that children must wear coats if temperatures are below 32°F. We are often presented with requests for children to remain indoors at recess, generally because of allergies or as part of a recovery from illness. If it is necessary for your child to be indoors at recess, a note from the doctor will be required. We appreciate your support and cooperation with our recess procedure. _________________________________________ Clip box top labels from everyday products you already have at home and send them to school!
