Dear Friends,
Is a pleasure for me to organize the GKI international Gasshuku here
in our city of Maia and to welcome our international family on behalf of
the Karate Club of Maia. We wish to make your stay unforgettable so
we will try to innovate while creating harmony between what we want
to achieve and the specific interests of each participant.
Assuming this “Innovation and Harmony” motto as our banner, our
mission is to contribute to the promotion and organization of this
important Gasshuku, where we will host social events to compliment with the practice of karate at the
highest level.
We plan many surprises but the training will be the best part where we plan to incorporate training covering
body mechanics such as speed training, work with children, sport combat and of course our traditional
karate.
I trust all of you will enjoy this Gasshuku.

WELCOME TO MAIA
.
Maia is an industrial city in the north of Portugal, surrounded by other cities of the Porto metropolitan area
and not far from the Atlantic coast. It has an area of 83.14 km² and had 140 859 inhabitants in 2008.
Located along the Douro river estuary, Porto is a World Heritage Site. The city's name is written as 'o Porto'
meaning 'the port' and as a result, the English refer to it as 'Oporto' in modern literature.
Along with being the second-largest Portuguese city after Lisbon, Oporto is famous for its Port wine and its
cathedral, which has a Romanesque choir; it is neoclassical Stock Exchange and the typical Portuguese
Manueline-style Church of Santa.
HISTORY
The area where the city is presently placed has been inhabited from the Iron Age and there is much
evidence of marks of the Romans occupation.
The history of this county is closely linked to the founding of the nation by Prince Afonso Henriques, who
may have been educated here, and its famous warrior Gonçalo Mendes da Maia, the “Liberator”, so named
for having entered into constant fearless fights against Saracens, belonged.
In the fifteen century, during the Portuguese Discoveries period, Maia produced most of the sails that
equipped the Portuguese caravels. In the early sixteenth century, King Manuel I granted the charters,
which established Maia although it later ceased to be a separate municipality.
In1809, Napoleon’s army of the Duke of Dalmatia, Marshal Soult, crossed Maia in its way to Oporto. In the
turbulent years of liberation war, between 1832 and 1834, Maia saw many bloody struggles.
After the proclamation of the Republic in 1910, Maia (considered a village in the year 1902) had, for some
time, as administrator, the philosopher Leonardo Coimbra. Finally, on the 23th August, 1986, Maia was
finally given the status of city.
