Press Kit for Glenn Sutter (‘sue-ter’) April 2, 2015 Elevator Pitch Glenn Sutter is an award-winning folk-rocker with deep prairie roots. From his home in Regina, he watches and worries about the world, but he also thinks about beauty, love and the other good things in life. All of this comes through in his music – a rich blend of dreams and honesty that will lift and open you up, teasing out tears, smiles, and a bit of hope along the way. Overview Sutter hit the national spotlight in 2010 when his tune Weight of the World became the official Saskatchewan song on David Suzuki's Playlist for the Planet (CBC Radio3). Since then, Sutter has released 2 more albums, including a live fund-raising album called Seeds, in collaboration with Brett Dolter (B.D. Willoughby), and a second full-length studio album called Sweet Happiness. CBC has also called Sutter a "scientist who sings" because he has a background in biology and human ecology. In his latest album, he continues to explore ideas and feelings about love, nature, and the human condition. As one fan put it, he is "intelligent and emotional - the real thing!" Through the 1980s and 90s, he performed with bands and solo blues-folk musicians in Winnipeg and Ottawa, and then took a hiatus from music to work and raise a family. In 2006, after playing for several years in a Regina cover band (East 14th), Sutter turned his hand to songwriting. Inspired by songwriter retreats at the U of S Emma Lake Kenderdine Campus, he launched his critically acclaimed debut album All You Need in 2008, with WCMA-winning producer David j Taylor. The album features songs like High Hopes, which is about challenges that come with urban life, and My Son, a reflection on the dreams and aspirations of a young parent. This album led to feature interviews and primetime spins on several daytime radio programs, including The Afternoon Edition and Saskatchewan Weekend on CBC Radio1. Getting onto Playlist for the Planet was a major event in Sutter's musical life, especially since he has deep respect for David Suzuki. Other winning songs include tracks by Canadian music mainstays Danny Michel, Paper Lions, and Delhi 2 Dublin. The official iTunes compilation was released in March 2011 by Universal Music and features the 11 winning song entries alongside tracks by Canadian music legends Bruce Cockburn, Gordon Lightfoot, Sarah McLachlan and current/multiple Juno award winners LIGHTS and Johnny Reid. In January 2011, another one of Glenn’s songs, Days of Loneliness, was shortlisted for the book Essex County as part of the Canada Reads Soundtrack (CBC Radio1). Glenn's music was also singled out in December 2013 when his song Game On made the national Top 100 in the CBC Hockey Song Contest, and again in October 2014 when his tune Promises came runner up in the folk category of the international Song of the Year contest. Sutter has collaborated with many other Saskatchewan musicians, including Rebecca Lascue, Anna Rose, Lynn Besse McInnis, Terri Bear, and Brett Dolter (Library Voices, B.D. Willoughby). In April 2010, Sutter and Dolter recorded a live album called Seeds, which was released as a fund-raiser for the Regina North Central Community Association. In December 2011, Sutter released his second full-length solo album Sweet Happiness - again drawing on the production and engineering talents of David j Taylor. Feature tracks include Old Crow, a song about hope and wisdom, and Sunlight After Rain, a reflection on going home after a long time away. This album led to a prairie-wide release tour and main stage performances at the Cathedral Village Arts Festival, Regina’s Symphony Under the Sky, and Telemiracle 2013. A versatile and classically trained performer, Sutter has been attracting attention and fans wherever he plays. Most recently, he has been touring across western Canada and playing a string of local shows in support of his latest album. Press Quotes QC: Leaderpost – Jan 2014 “Sutter strives to emulate Neil Young and Blue Rodeo in an effort to reach deeper meaning with his songwriting.” BuzzCity – Jan 2012 – “Sutter’s appeal has been steadily growing for the past few years, starting from the release of his first CD All You Need in 2008... An observer of nature, both human and otherwise, Sutter brings a keen awareness as an ecologist and as an artist to his new album Sweet Happiness.” Regina LeaderPost – March 2012 – “As a biologist, Glenn Sutter knows that understanding human behaviour, let alone changing it, would be difficult. So Sutter has turned to music in an effort to inspire consumer change that would in turn have a positive effect on the environment.” Selected Reviews GREAT NEW ALBUM! - "Glenn has a great talent for songwriting and his latest album touches on several different genres with an honesty and intensity that shows his true craft. The album is written from the heart and Glenn's passion is evident on each track. It's easy to tell Glenn is influenced by legendary songwriters like John Hiatt & Steve Earle and this is a great listen for fans of "story songs." Darcy Lynch, Guitar Town, CKCU 93.1 FM, Ottawa, Ontario "Glenn Sutter offers a refreshing element to the music scene. His music reflects the respect in his heart for nature, good clean living, and pure loving. Not one to hold back for the sake of political-correctness, his messages are courageous and ring with truth. If we had more Glenn Sutters in our world, it would be a better place!"
