Recognizing the necessity for additional rules and regulations, the event wasn’t repeated until 1975 under the organization of undergraduate students at the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary. Now, after over 40 years, GNCTR attracts over 400 students from over 20 schools across Canada (and sometimes beyond) to compete to create the world’s best concrete toboggan. The event has grown into the oldest undergraduate engineering competition in Canada. the event Over the course of five days and four nights, teams participate in the opening ceremonies, an activity day, the technical exhibition, race day and closing ceremonies. Teams are comprised of up to 30 students, have a team theme, and costumes that reflect their theme. Each team presents a toboggan with static concrete running surfaces, a roll bar, and working steering and braking, that can carry five people for race day, all while weighing under 300 pounds. These toboggans must also pass a safety screening performed by a panel of professionals before they can be raced. past awards Best Performing Toboggan Best Steering Performance Best Braking Performance Best Steering Design Best Braking System Best Concrete Mix Design Best Concrete Reinforcement Design Best Technical Report Best Theoretical Toboggan Most Sustainable Team Most Original/Innovative Design Best Team Spirit Best Theme Costumes People’s Choice Team Most Improved Team Best Technical Display Best Rookie Team Most Spectacular Run King of the Hill World’s Fastest Toboggan Most Aesthetically Pleasing Toboggan 20+ schools 400+ students Throughout the competition, competitors are judged on their toboggan’s technical merit, performance and aesthetics, their technical exhibition display and technical report, as well as their teams spirit and costumes. 5 | GNCTR 2016 the hosts Ottawa is home to about 1,000,000 people, Canada’s parliament, and two major universities.
