The Gourmet Music and Culture Club (GMCC) supports and promotes the advancement of music and fine
arts through social and professional relationships aimed at developing and maintaining high musical standards
and aiding and encouraging music education and performance. The purpose of this piano competition is to
encourage and support excellence in the performance of classical music and to showcase young talent.
ELIGIBILITY
Students aged 10 to 18 years (as of May 2, 2015) are eligible to compete in one of two divisions. The
competition will be limited to 10 students in Division 1 and 8 students in Division 2.

APPLICATION PROCESS & SELECTION CRITERIA

The winners of the 2014 GMCC Competition are not eligible to enter in 2015.
•
Students will be selected to compete based on the date of their application postmark.
•
Alphabetical order based on last names will determine tie-breakers.
•
GMCC members receive first priority acceptance and may submit applications starting March 23, 2015
•
WSFMC members receive second priority and may submit applications starting March 30, 2015.
•
Piano teachers who are not members of GMCC may enter one student in each division. GMCC
members may enter more than one student in each division.
•
All applicants may submit beginning April 20, 2015. Should all 18 competition slots be filled before
April 20, all other applicants will be notified by email or phone. Refunds will be issued to students that
are not accepted for the 2015 competition.
ENTRANCE FEE
$40 (+$13*)

Applicants must be members of WSFMC
*Non-WSFMC members may enter for a $13 special non-member fee to be included
by separate check with the $40 entrance fee or the student’s instructor may become a
member of GMCC.
REPERTOIRE
• The GMCC Application panel will determine if submitted applications adhere to the repertoire
rules and requirements. Should an application be rejected due to repertoire choice, another
piece may be submitted for approval
• Participants will perform two memorized pieces, each from a contrasting musical time period.
The contrast must be noticeable. The judge(s) may disqualify participants who do not comply
with this rule.
• Participants must use standard published repertoire. (This refers to music printed for
distribution and sale and available through the general market in printed form with legal
copyright printed on the music.)
• Participants must use legally-obtained music that is available to the general public.
Music purchased from a legal internet source meets the criteria if it is accompanied by
copyright information and a receipt from the website source stating the date downloaded and
the music title.
• Only original compositions may be performed in the competition -- no transcriptions are
allowed.
• Each participant’s performance time is strictly limited to 12 minutes in Division 1 and to 15
minutes in Division 2.
• No changes in repertoire are permitted following application and acceptance.
• No refunds will be given after the application has been accepted.
• All applicants will receive an email confirmation of acceptance. Checks will be returned
should an application be rejected by the GMCC Application Panel.
• The GMCC Application Panel reserves the right to reject repertoire they deem not suitable

First and second-place winners must perform at a GMCC-sponsored event during 2015 at a mutually
agreed date and time.

Enclose $40 entrance fee check payable to GMCC. Should the “non-member” fee apply, please
include a separate check for $13 payable to GMCC. The application fee is non-refundable unless
applications are no longer being accepted. Division start times to be assigned by April 27, 2015 by
email or phone.
ABOUT THE ADJUDICATOR
Roger McVey
American pianist Roger McVey has performed as a soloist and
collaborative pianist throughout the United States, in Europe,
Asia, Cyprus, New Zealand, and Mexico. Dr. McVey is an
Assistant Professor of Piano at the University of Idaho, and has
previously taught at the University of Kansas, Mercer University,
and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. He received his
musical training from the University of Kansas, Indiana
University, and East Carolina University.
Additionally, he has studied at the Aspen Music Festival and
the Chautauqua Institute.
Dr. McVey has studied with internationally acclaimed pianists
Menahem Pressler, Jack Winerock, Anton Nel, Herbert Stessin,
and Henry Doskey, and has coached with artists such as Claude Frank, Janos Starker, William
Warfield, Eric Rosenblith, and the Emerson Quartet.
He was a top prizewinner in the International Beethoven Competition (U.S.A.), and was a SemiFinalist at the International Franz Liszt Competition in Poland, where critics praised his "passionate
artistry and electrifying virtuosity." Recent performances have taken him to China, Korea, Spain,
and Italy, as well as New York, Minneapolis, and Atlanta.
In 2012 he released his third CD recording, entitled Perspectives. In addition to his solo concerts,
Dr. McVey performs with his piano trio, the Idaho Trio, and regularly collaborates as a chamber
musician.
An active clinician, Roger frequently gives masterclasses and presentations at universities, music
schools, and for music teacher associations. He has presented at the College Music Society
national conference, and for the Wisconsin Music Teachers Association. Besides music of all styles,
Roger's other interests include cooking, playing chess, surfing, and skiing. He resides in Moscow,
Idaho with his wife Giselle and their three children.
