Now in its fifteenth year, the GPCA
Leadership Program continues to
prepare members to thrive in their
roles within their businesses and
within their roles at GPCA. The
2015 GPCA Leadership Class has
been selected. Their first trip is to
Sapelo Island May 12th – 14th where

they will focus on the Disciplines
of Personal Leadership and Team
Leadership.
On Tuesday, April 14th, GPCA will
host our Spring Mosquito Seminar. Instructor Heather Gordy will
provide you with an innovative
learning experience as you earn 2
hours HPC, 2 hours Category 41,
and 2 hours Category 24.
On Friday, April 17th, GPCA will
host CRAM Day. The CRAM day
goes from 8 AM to 5 PM with
instructor Jim Chase reviewing as
much as he can “cram” into that
time to help you study for the
state PCO exam. The morning
program (about 8 to 11:30) will be

WHY CUSTOMERS BAIL
FOR A CHEAPER PRICE
One of my coaching clients recently asked me, “Hal, what can I
do about customers bailing out on me and going with another
company for a cheaper price?”
I said, “Well...let me ask YOU a question…Do you have a
dentist? Would you bail out on your dentist and switch to
another one if you could save a few dollars? What about your
family doctor…would you bail and switch if you found a cheaper
one? How about your mechanic? Would you dump him for a
cheaper mechanic? What about your barber?”
His answer to each of those questions was emphatically “NO”.
I said, “So…why do you think people are quick to bail on their
exterminator in order to save a few bucks?”
Here’s what I think:
·
They have no RELATIONSHIP with the exterminator.
·
They have not grown to KNOW, LOVE & TRUST the
exterminator.
·
They feel no sense of DEBT to the exterminator.
·
They don’t see much VALUE in the exterminator.
·
They don’t have much clue as to what the exterminator
actually DOES FOR THEM.
·
The exterminator hasn’t EDUCATED them properly.
·
They view the exterminator as an EXPENDABLE ENTITY.
Most people would never think of dumping their dentist, doctor,
mechanic, or hairdresser just to go with a cheaper price. And
it’s all because of the RELATIONSHIP.
We don’t normally dump people we know, love and trust…
especially when they are taking care of us.
BOTTOM LINE: If you will work harder to develop a knowing,
loving and trusting relationship with your customers, you won’t
get dumped for a cheaper price. (When I owned my pest
control company I
was the most
expensive company
in Atlanta and I
averaged doubledigit growth for 18
years!)
Yes…I do realize
there are exceptions…but for the
most part…it is a
FACT.

Service to Others

We are excited about our charitable partnership with The
American Red Cross. The proceeds from our Annual GPCA
Charity Golf Tournament provide monetary support for the
Red Cross and our Burnett Scholarship Fund. This year’s
tournament will be on August 11th at Cherokee Run in Conyers.
Additionally, we have hosted three blood drives in conjunction with our conferences that raised 136 pints of blood.
Because of our support, we are making a huge difference in
the fight to save lives in Georgia. Stay tuned for the next
blood drive!
Have your graduating high school seniors applied for the Burnett Scholarship Fund? This scholarship fund awards GPCA
family members money to use towards college expenses.

The GPCA Legislative Luncheon on February 10th fed almost 250 people Legislators and staff members. GPCA
made a great impact!
At NPMA’s Legislative Day, GPCA facilitated eleven meetings with US Senators and US House of Representatives at
NPMA’s Legislative Day in DC. Thanks to all of those who
represented GA so well! What an impressive and wellorganized contingency we had. Special thanks to Rick Bell,
Chris Gorecki, Bodine Sinyard and Shay Runion! Special
recognition to our Executive Director, Connie Rogers, who
made a wonderful presentation to the other state associations on the successes Georgia has had in our local, state,
and national legislative and regulatory matters over the
years. Thank you for representing us so well, Connie!
How about a vacation?! The GPCA Summer Conference
provides a relaxing environment to connect with industry
colleagues and grow relationships. This year’s Summer
Conference will be at Reunion in Orlando. The dates are
July 8th – 12th. This is a sister property to Hammock and
has three signature golf courses on site, a huge water park
and all within a few minutes of Disney. We are looking forward to a great time!

I have been tracking
pollinator and neonicotinoid specific bills in the
U. S. and we are now
over 65 proposals nationwide. Fortunately for us,
there has been no
mention of this in our
legislature but that
certainly doesn’t mean
that nothing is happening.
The Ga. Dept. of Agriculture, UGA and Cooperative Extension have
been working with stakeholders all across the
state to develop our state
pollinator protection plan.
These plans are a direct
result of collaboration
between EPA, ASPCRO,
AAPCO, RISE and NPMA
which started over a year

product labels will change
substantially.
I would recommend you
start reviewing your material and treatment protocols now to prevent any
surprises down the road.

month to meet with our
Senators and Representatives. A special thanks to
those who made our

amazing day and we had

Gabriella. We discussed
the proposed USDA/APHIS
fees, (taxes) on quarantined commodity fumigation and the legislation
proposed in the House to
ban the use of neonicotinoids; that’s all usesfrom seed treatments to
bed bugs on public and
private land. You think

I’m happy to report our
legislators got our message and realize how that
could affect all Agriculture,
related industries from
Structural pest control to
corn growers to cattle
farmers.

Cyber Security & Privacy Insurance
The Case for Cyber Insurance
Our increasing dependence on the Internet, email, and online databases may make us more efficient, but it also puts us at increased risk
of sensitive materials falling into the wrong hands.
Technology is changing daily and the ways in which information is
collected, distributed, and even hacked, can change in an instant.
Cyber insurance (more accurately called information security and privacy liability insurance) is rated based on the amount of information at risk
– number and size of records, nature of records, type of business or
service provided, and revenue. Coverage differs from carrier to carrier,
but these policies typically address both prevention (“pre-event”) and
reaction (“post-event”) to data security breaches, and they often include
valuable loss control and risk management services.
The value of digital data is often overlooked – until it is compromised.
To better understand informational and digital assets, think of them as
you would physical assets in any other risk management scenario.
Having a full grasp and inventory of information collected, stored, or
managed is the key to being prepared for any breach event.
5 Key Questions to Assess Cyber Exposure
1. What kinds of proprietary information do you collect, manage,
or store?
2. What kinds of confidential personal information do you collect,
manage, or store from your clients and your employees? Examples
would include:
a. Protected Card Information (credit card information,
online commerce, etc.)
b. Personal Healthcare Information (health records,
social security numbers, etc.)
c. Personal Information (name, address, age, driver’s
license numbers, income, insurance, etc.)
3. What kinds of confidential business information do you collect,
manage, or store from your clients? (credit card information,
banking information, address, revenues, other information subject
to confidentiality agreements, etc.)
4. In what ways do you collect, store, or manage information?
(i.e. paper files, electronic database or server, etc.) How is this
information protected? (i.e. locked up, encrypted, etc.)
5. Do you employ third parties or outside vendors to handle
proprietary information in any way? (i.e. document disposal, digital
backup, etc.) Do you outsource any information technology?
Technology is complicated, and responding to a breach event is no
different. The loss control and risk management services provided by
carriers are invaluable in helping their insureds find the best experts
(forensic, legal, public relations, etc.) to navigate these difficult issues.
Reacting too quickly can cost more than necessary. So simply knowing
who to call when a breach occurs can often help mitigate a crisis tremendously and provide peace of mind.
5 Key Questions to Assess Cyber Preparedness
1. Who is responsible for information security with your
organization? Does this individual oversee or select informationrelated third party vendors?
2. Do you have a formal information security policy in place? If so,
are all employees trained on it?
3. What loss control initiatives are in place for information security?
4. Much like a formal disaster preparedness plan, do you have a
formal procedure in place for a data breach incident?
a. What is your formal process in notifying clients/
customers of a potential breach?
b. Are you aware of the state statutes regarding
Notification and regulatory compliance
in a breach event?
c. Are there funds set aside for these notification
expenses, identity theft/credit monitoring services, and
any public relations or advertising campaign to combat a
bruised public image?
5. What is your protocol for lost electronics, such as cellphones or
laptops? How would you address the loss of digital assets on such
property?
Conclusion
Cyber insurance is still new territory and tends to be approached with
hesitancy or even a bit of skepticism. The exposure is real, and it affects both large and small companies. Savvy companies are doing
everything they can to protect their information assets, especially from a
technology perspective.

When the requirements to present
approved training escalated, the main
outcry from the industry was “help us
meet the State’s demands”.

state-of-the art “Train the Trainer”
program that satisfied the State’s
goals. The Structural Pest Control
Commission revamped their requirement list, accepting our Train-theTrainer Program as the standard.
The first class had lots to say about
their experience, mainly that they
took the class to be able to do training—but it was so much more. If you
talk to customers, do training, manage employees this program will help
you enjoy your work and
improve your performance.
But something else happened when
the first Train the Trainer Program was
offered. The program turned out to be
a way to overcome stage fright,

website at gpca.org that will empower our members to
purchase products and complete registrations online. We
are working on a Learning Management System that will
allow our members to obtain Computer Based Training
Hours.

We’ve invested time, money and resources to ensure that
our “Find a Pest Control Company” feature is user friendly.

At the GPCA office, our upstairs learning environment will
soon be undergoing a transformation as we invest in
making it a modern day classroom.

Spring Cleaning: Clean your desk
today; it keeps the doctor away
There could be a bigger benefit to keeping your desk clean other
than being organized and impressing the boss. It could prevent
you from getting sick. A new study shows some desks are dirtier
than toilet seats and contain more bacteria. Why? Generally, the
evening cleaning crews steer away from them for the sake of an
employee’s privacy. As a result, coffee spilled here and there is
never cleaned up, not to mention those cinnamon-coffee-cake
crumbs.
The average desk has 400 times more bacteria than the average
toilet seat, according to Charles Gerba, a germ expert who studied 12 workplace surface areas. The most bacteria-laden objects
included phones, microwave handles, water fountain handles and
keyboards.
Those who keep a dirty desk, in fact, are more susceptible to
catching a cold and other ailment spread by unchecked germs,
according to the study. Consider this: 80 percent of colds and flu
come from touching surfaces, the study said. The solution is simple: Buy a disinfecting product such as Clorox wipes, and clean
your desk daily. This will reduce germs and bacteria by as much
as 99.9 percent. Now that will impress the boss!

The PROFILE is the official publication of the Georgia Pest Control Association and has been in continuous
publication since 1967.
The PROFILE is published bi-monthly by the Georgia Pest Control Association and distributed free to
its members and certified operators with Georgia licenses. The purpose of the news magazine is to
disseminate factual information, to promote general standards and ethics in pest control as well as foster
research and share knowledge to its members and the industry. The Georgia Pest Control Association is a
non-profit 501c6 organization dedicated to communication to the industry.
