Graduate Student and Postdoc E-Newsletter 4/21/2015 Edition Spring Issue 14 FEATURE UC Student Wins 2015 MAGS Distinguished Thesis Award Gavin D’Souza, a mechanical engineering student, was recognized for his outstanding master’s thesis work at the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools’ annual meeting in April. His thesis, “Influence of Serial Coronary Stenoses on Diagnostic Parameters: An In-vitro Study with Numerical Validation,” addresses a critical issue that arises with certain cases of heart disease: When a patient has multiple blockages in their coronary artery, how can doctors accurately diagnose the severity of each blockage? NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS Dr. Alan Carsrud to Present Distinguished Entrepreneurship Scholar Lecture Dr. Alan Carsrud, an internationally recognized scholar in the field of entrepreneurship and family business, will present at UC on Monday, April 27 as part of a Distinguished Entrepreneurship Scholar Lecture. Dr. Carsrud’s presentation, “Understanding the Myth of High Growth Firms,” will be held 2:30-4 p.m., April 27, in Lindner Hall room 608 and is open to all faculty, staff and students. Also, all UC graduate students are invited to meet with Dr. Carsrud for an informal one-on-one talk on Tuesday, April 28, 9:30-10:45 a.m., in U-Square room 352 (225 Calhoun Street). Meet with Dr. Carsrud to talk about new venture creation, research, interdisciplinary research and more. UC AirportRide Provides Free Shuttle Service to CVG Need a ride? UC AirportRide is a student-run shuttle service from UC’s Main Campus (CRC Circle) to the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG)—free of charge, for all UC students. The shuttle service is reservationonly, and will run Wednesday, April 29 to Sunday, May 3. Spots are limited, so sign up as soon as you are certain of your travel plans. Registration is open until Monday, April 27: http://tribunal.uc.edu/airport_ride/. AirportRide also needs volunteers. Sign up as a driver (must be >21 and take online driving test), passenger, or check-in person. They especially need check-in people, who only need to be present half hour before departure time and can leave right when the vans leave. (It’s only a 30 minute commitment per time slot!) Doctoral Student Advocates on Capitol Hill As a fellow in the 2015 Society for Neuroscience’s (SfN) Early Career Policy Fellows Program, Ryan Makinson (neuroscience, PhD) participated in SfN's ninth annual Capitol Hill Day on Thursday, March 26, 2015. During their visits with members of Congress, Ryan and his fellow neuroscientists discussed the benefits of investing in scientific and biomedical research and advocated for increased federal funding for scientific research.
