Alleluia! First Reading n our world today, filled as it is with death, insane cruelties and evil, Christians on this Acts10:34, 37-43 Easter Sunday fill their hearts and minds with God’s greatest Second Reading gift, namely, that evil’s worst is being and will be quashed. Col.3:1-4 Death does not and cannot have the final say. Hate will end in Gospel futility. The head of the serpent will be crushed. Death cannot Jn.20:1-9 overcome life. Christ is risen! Alleluia! MASS TIMES What is the purpose of Christ’s birth, life, death, and Morning Prayers: resurrection? It is all for the life of the world, human life and 5:45a.m. eternal life. That purpose was summed up and proclaimed by Jesus during the Last Supper on the night before He died: “I am MONDAY: GROS ISLET Mass 6:00 a. m. the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this Mass: 12:30 p.m. bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give TUESDAY: GROS ISLET for the life of the world.” 6:00 a.m. The event we celebrate from Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday has two aspects: by His death, Christ liberates us from sin; by WEDNESDAY His Resurrection, He opens for us the way to a new and eternal 12:30 & 6:00 p.m.: Gros Islet life. Tracy Mondesir For most Christian churches, the peak celebration Theresa Cox is Easter Sunday. For us Catholics, the more significant Annie Etienne celebration was the night before, at the Easter Vigil. It Priscillia Henry transports believers to the Upper Room with the disciples who are in Claude Guillaume mourning and waiting only to be greeted by the Risen One. Claude Griffith The extremely festive ceremonies and Divine Liturgy which are DECEASED celebrated during the Easter Vigil are unique to that night and are the most elaborate and important of the liturgical year and many people Joseph Clarke who only attend church services once a year do so at midnight for Celestine Emanus Easter. Marie Therese Fontelio Cecile Pierre We’ve been preparing for Easter through forty days of Lent, Emmanuel Philip culminating in the solemn vigil. We wait in darkness and bless a fire. The Paschal candle, whose lighting symbolizes the resurrection of Christ from the dead, is lit from that new Easter fire. The flame of the WEEKDAY READINGS paschal candle is then used to light candles held by parishioners MONDAY symbolizing the emergence from sin and the resurrection of Jesus. We Acts2:14,22-33 process with candles and hear re-told the stories of our salvation Matt.28:8-15 through the scriptures. The emphasis is on waiting for the culmination of the story: Christ’s TUESDAY resurrection from the dead. Bells are rung, and alleluias are sung as we Acts2:36-41 hear the gospel account of Christ’s rising. Then, following this Jn.20:11-18 proclamation of the core of our beliefs, new members are brought into the Church through baptism and a profession of faith. The recounting WEDNESDAY of Christ’s new life is closely connected to the Church’s renewal Acts3:1-10 Lk.24:13-35 through the reception of its new members. This celebration as a vigil is important because it doesn’t just THURSDAY commemorate something God did in the past; it celebrates something Acts3:11-26 God is doing today. The celebration of Easter, as a vigil, invites us to Lk.24:35-48 break out our most potent symbols of God’s action, and our response. So the waiting, the readings, music, candles, procession, and initiation FRIDAY all remind us that God has accomplished something amazing by loving Acts4:1-12 us so much. Jn.21:1-14 And our vigil is a statement, individually and collectively, that we are SATURDAY ready to be renewed and to live out of the grace we’ve received.
