Guildwood Tennis Club Website: guildwoodtennis.com President’s Report April 2015 Fellow Tennis Members: Spring has finally arrived! Your Guildwood Tennis Club Executive has been meeting on a regular basis to plan the events for the 2015 tennis season. In this mailing you will find enclosed your shoe tag, calendars for May and June, your OTA member card (for new members), a guest pass, as well as a flyer for Junior and Adult lessons. Our courts will be open from April 17th or 18th, weather permitting. New for 2015: VERY IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ 1. If you look carefully at the calendars for May and June you will see that all of the events from 2014 will be available: Junior and Adult Lessons, the Opening Round Robin and the STF Teams. For further information feel free to contact our Club Pro, Marina, or any member of the executive and/or check the Guildwood tennis website. 2. At the annual general meeting in November 2014, it was decided that we would have two STF Teams this year: A1 and C1. In lieu of a third STF team we will have a fun, competitive event called the Guildwood Cup, beginning in June (Thursday nights) from 7 p.m.. Each participant will be a member of a team and will play doubles matches against every other team to earn points for his or her team. If you did not sign up for Guildwood Cup night in your application form, you can still participate by calling Diane Lang at 416-266-6947. 3. I am pleased to announce that Jared Nicholson will again be our Court Monitor this summer. He will be in charge at our courts several nights a week. Among his responsibilities will be organizing the Friday and Monday-night round-robins, contacting new members re participating in Club events, assisting the Executive in organizing the Opening Round Robin (Saturday, May 9th), New Members’ Meet, Greet and Rally (Monday, June 8th), as well as assisting in our Club Championship Tournament in August. Welcome back, Jared! 4. Last year we had an exciting club doubles tournament followed by a wonderful corn roast and PRIZES for almost everyone. This would not be possible except for the support of our local merchants. Please support these community sponsors who support us: Valumart, Guildwood IDA Pharmacy, Muddy Paws, Ellis Flowers, Guildwood Dry Cleaners & Tailors, Starbucks, Pizza Nova, Subway, the Hockey Hall of Fame and Amherst Crane and Concrete Pumping.. Marina Pereira will once again be our club tennis instructor. Feel free to contact Marina if you wish to participate in any of our adult or junior lessons. The Opening Round Robin will take place on Saturday May 9th (rain date: May 10th ) between 1:00 and 4:00 pm. Everyone is welcome! Refreshments will be served. Our public court hours (non-members) are Saturday and Sunday between 4:00 and 6:00 pm. All other hours are reserved strictly for members. We respectfully request that you wear your shoes tags (purple for Adults, orange for Juniors) whenever you are playing on our courts. This is the only visible way that we have to recognize you as a member. All guests and non-members will be charged a non-member fee of $5/day. This year we will once again have a Social/Recreational round robin on Friday and Monday evenings from 7:00 to 10:00pm. The great thing about a round robin is that you can just come out and play - no need to go out and find your own tennis partner! I encourage everyone to participate on these nights – we need your support! New this year is that each member will receive one free guest pass, which we suggest you keep handy by putting it in your racquet bag where it will be available when you need it. The guest pass is to encourage members to bring a friend out to try tennis at our Club. This pass will save newcomers the $5 guest fee. Marina, Jared or any member of the Executive will be happy to collect these guest passes whenever we are at the courts. A guest pass will be good for one visit only, for casual play or any non-competitive Club activity, and does not include our free Lessons. Special congratulations go out to Victor Krustev, who has won the Junior Nationals 16 and under! Victor was a long-time student of Marina, and he and his brother Christian still help out at our Club with our teams and our Junior programs. Mariela Krustev does a great job running our club website. Inter-Club STF: This year we will have two adult teams participating in STF (Scarborough Tennis Federation.) If you wish to play or try out for one of the teams, be sure to check the appropriate box on the back of the membership form. Team Captains: League Captain A1 Marina Pereira C1 Rosemary Enright Boys A Marina Pereira Time Slot Wednesday evening Tuesday evening Saturday morning Important: For those participating on our STF teams, we remind our players that you are representing the Guildwood Tennis Club. STF has several protocols for appropriate court behavior, and these rules should be followed at all times. Your team captain can advise you about these protocols, or you can view them on the STF website. Only new members will receive the OTA membership card this year because the cards previously issued are still valid. To activate your OTA card, which enables discounts on tennis merchandise, Rogers Cup tickets, and other programs found on the OTA website, simply follow the instructions printed on the card. I would like to remind everyone that a successful tennis season relies on the voluntary assistance of many people, not just those listed on the Executive Committee. When filling out your application, take a moment to indicate willingness to volunteer for one of our activities. ** Again, please wear your shoe tags while playing tennis on our courts! Looking forward to a great season of tennis! See you on the courts!
