HOUSE
June 22 - August 21, 2015
Welcome to Summer at Harbor House ~ Scamper Camp Style!
Harbor House has been providing a quality summer camp experience for young children on Mount
Desert Island since the mid-1980’s. For 30 years families have known that they can count on Harbor House
Children’s Center to provide an enriching and safe summer camp program with a knowledgeable and caring
staff. The group leaders at Scamper Camp are the same well-loved professionals who teach at the Children’s
Center during the school year. Our core staff of five teachers has a total of nearly 70 years in the early
childhood field. Working with young children is their passion ~ not just a summer job. The additional
counselors we hire for summer are young men and women who have experience working with children and
want to spend their summer vacation with us at Scamper Camp. When your child attends Scamper Camp
you can rest assured that our entire staff is dedicated to creating the safest, most enriching summer
program possible for your little camper.
Scamper Camp is open to children from age 3 to those having completed 1st grade. Camp runs from
8:30 to 4:00, Monday through Friday, with extended care hours available on a limited basis. Director
Mary Ellen Martel and the Scamper Camp staff look forward to sharing an adventure-filled summer with your
child!
RATES:
Year-Round Resident $175.00 ($160.00 camp rate plus $15.00 activity fee)
Non-Resident $210.00
There is the possibility of afternoon care for participants registered with Southwest Harbor Library Story
Camp during weeks 2 & 3. Please check with Mary Ellen for availability. The fee for each week is $75.
New friends, new adventures and lots of fun await your child at Scamper Camp 2015!
Scamper Camp ~ The Way Summer Should Be!
Whether your child comes for one week, nine weeks or anything in between,
Scamper Camp 2015 promises to be filled with fun for everyone! Each week
your child will spend lots of time outdoors in the fresh air and will also enjoy a
variety of activities including arts & crafts, hiking, swimming, museums and more.
Monday is “home base” day. We go for walks to the shore, visit the Library,
splash in our wading pools and always spend time in our natural PlayGarden.
Tuesday is beach day. We alternate between our favorites ~ Echo Lake & Back
Beach.
Wednesday is when we enjoy special field trips. Check the schedule below for
details.
Thursday we head back to the beach. Sand Beach, Seal Harbor Beach and
Lamoine Beach are a few of our favorites.
Friday brings our special friend, “The Zany Storyteller”, a weekly volunteer who
reads great stories using lots of fun voices.
Check out the 2015 Scamper Camp Field Trip Schedule:
Week 1 June 22-26: Our annual trek to Sand Beach takes place this week. There are fewer visitors early in
the season, leaving lots of space for us to play!
Week 2 June 29-July 3: A visit to the Abbe Museum to learn more about the Native Americans of MDI &
Maine.
Week 3 July 6-10: We will visit Sieur de Monts Spring and enjoy a walk along the trails.
Week 4 July 13-17: One of our favorites ~ Wonderland.
Week 5 July 20-24: Thanks to a generous benefactor we will once again be able to attend the Children’s
Production at Acadia Repertory Theater.
Week 6 July 27-31: We will visit a local farm to see some interesting animals and also to learn about the
food they grow.
Week 7 August 3-7: A hike to Valley Cove to play along the shore and look for treasures.
Week 8 August 10-14: Blueberry picking ~ some may even make it home!
Week 9 August 17-21: Our favorite way to end the summer is with a boat ride. We’ll hop on a boat and
check out the sights and sounds of the ocean.
Due to the unpredictability of weather and scheduling with seasonal businesses, our schedule is subject to
change without notice. If we need to reschedule, we will do our best to substitute an equally fun activity!
