Principal’s Message
Parents, Students and Friends of Harding Learning
Center,
You may have noticed that the exterior of the Harding
building is going through some changes. Students
who are in the Environmental Science class along
with their school mates from all Destinations classes
are working on creating a Demonstration Garden
highlighting the different coastal regions found here in Coos Bay.
Students are working hard to remove weeds and replace them with plants
native to our environment. The Dunes area is underway and can be seen on
the southeast side of our building. Stay tuned for more progress!
I would like to encourage you to contact us here at the Harding building if
you have any questions about the variety of programs that we offer or
concerns regarding your child's education. We are here to support Coos Bay
kids!

SMARTER BALANCED PARENT NIGHT
On Monday, April 27, Coos Bay Public Schools invite parents and community members to join
them for the Regional Smarter Balance Parent Night. This region-wide event will be an introduction and round table discussion about the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) student tests and how they differ from our old tests.
Last month, students in Oregon started taking the new Smarter Balanced assessment. This
marked a huge milestone in a multi-year process that began with Oregon’s adoption of the Common Core back in 2010. The new test mirrors the rich instruction going on in Oregon classrooms with questions that ask our students to explain, describe, analyze, and reflect. It is, without a doubt, a better test than our previous fill-in-the-bubble assessment and will provide us with
valuable information about what students know and can do. This feedback on student learning
will help us to identify gaps as early as third grade, adjust instruction as needed, measure the
growth in student learning over time, and target efforts and resources to where they are needed
most. – Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction Rob Saxton
You’re welcome to join us in this discussion. The meeting will be held at Milner Crest April 27th
from 6:00 – 7:30 PM. It’s located at 1255 Hemlock Ave. in Coos Bay, off N 10th St. above Mingus Park. Please call Chad Putman, Director of Teaching and Learning at 541-267-1319 or
chadp@coos-bay.k12.or.us for more information.
