Harwood Announces Sixth Annual Hall of Fame Class Harwood is pleased to announce the Hall of Fame Class of 2015. These six individuals will be inducted at the Sixth Annual Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction Ceremony on September 12, 2015 at Harwood. The inductees comprising the Sixth Annual Class (2015) are: Stu Campbell, Harwood teacher; Barb Burns Maynard, Harwood Coach; Richard Russell, Waterbury ’51; Tim Chant ’81; Codi Collins Brown ’04; and Greg Mehuron ’08 Please see page 6 for the full press release. Page 2 HARWOOD’S BEST BUDDY Maureen Charron-Shea is a cornerstone of the Harwood Union faculty. Her accomplishments as a Speech-Language Pathologist and a proponent for equitable access to education are deep and wide. Maureen is a graduate of the University of Vermont. First earning a Bachelor of Science in Communication Disorders and then a Master’s of Science with a concentration in Communication Disorders. Her career in education began in the Burlington School system. She also worked several years part time in the Montpelier School District before becoming a member of the Rehabilitation Team at CHVS. Then, in 1988, Maureen accepted the position of Speech Language Pathologist at Harwood Union; and she has been making her mark ever since. Her 27-year journey at Harwood is characterized by contributions that have transformed a school building into a community of learners with the capacity to uphold the Harwood Union mission; that is an environment in which every person is valued as an individual.. Maureen, an ardent advocate for students with disabilities, and has been instrumental in building authentic relationships among diverse student groups that reflect awareness, acceptance and advocacy. In addition to providing 1:1 services and being a strong colleague and co-teacher, Maureen has successfully launched Nationally recognized service-learning projects that not only fulfills the promise of inclusion, but supports opportunities for the development of friendships and leadership. Maureen Charron-Shea, Jackie Bora, Destiny Mason, Lindsey Lowell presenting the work of Best Buddies at the Vermont Principal’s Association Best Buddies, in its second year at Harwood, is one example of Maureen’s effort to build community. Best Buddies is a club that pairs students with and without disabilities in 1:1 friendships, and as one student put it, "Best Buddies makes me feel happy, and like I could make a serious change in the world." Maureen believes there is no “normal”. She states, “In truth, we are all unique in this life together. I further believe communication is fundamental to understanding others and ourselves. It is my privilege to work with students in developing their communication skills.” Maureen is retiring this year. The next step in her journey is to partner with her husband in his real estate business serving as a financial manager. In addition, she will spend her time kayaking, doing yoga and reading for pleasure. Page 3 Science in the Field On Tuesday May 5th Students in Jeff Robins’, Kristi McKnight’s, and John Kerrigan’s honors biology classes took a trip to UVM’s cancer research center. While there, students were able to visit the pathology lab, where they viewed and handled tissues with and without tumors. Students were also able use some of the equipment such as a scanning electron microscope. Before leaving students had the opportunity to complete a mini lab investigation on identifying genes associated with cancer. Harwood Calcutta As Shakespeare Said: … “I can no other answer make, but thanks, and thanks and ever thanks” (Twelfth Night) Our 2nd annual Harwood Calcutta night was an amazing success! Thanks to all of you who bought tickets, donated gifts for the drawings, or passed our requests on. The response was so awesome; we could have sold a dozen more tickets! Harwood teacher Tami Munford won $1,000, congrats Tami! Boys Hockey Coach Dave Morse won $500, and the grand winner, Bill Anderson, won $2,000. There are not enough “thank you” s in the world to adequately thank Brian McCarthy. His tireless work to promote the night was the single biggest reason for our success. Thanks again for all your work and help to provide a bit of budget relief for our athletic programs! This year's event will begin at HUHS at 7:15pm on Saturday, June 13, for bag checks and boarding; continue to Twin City Lanes for bowling, arcade, two-story laser tag, and munchies; travel to Burlington to board the Spirit of Ethan Allen for a 1:30am - 3:30am cruise with music and ice cream sundae bar; and ending with drop-offs at the Waterbury Train Station (4:45am) and HUHS (5:00am). All contracts must be signed by the student and a parent/guardian even if the student is 18 years of age or older. DUXBURY, VT: The Sixth Annual Class of the Harwood Hall of Fame was announced today by Dwight Fiske and Mitch Casey, co-chairpersons of the Harwood Union Hall of Fame Committee. “The goal of the Hall of Fame committee each year is to elect individuals or groups who represent the best that Harwood, Waitsfield and Waterbury High Schools and their respective communities have to offer. Our Inaugural class set the benchmark for all other classes to follow and we are excited to announce the Harwood Hall of Fame Class of 2015 honorees” Fiske said. “This group of inductees has left their mark on their respective high schools and through their actions and accomplishments during high school and beyond” Casey added. The inductees comprising the Sixth Annual Class (2015) are: Stu Campbell, Harwood teacher; Barb Burns Maynard, Harwood Coach; Richard Russell, Waterbury ’51; Tim Chant ’81; Codi Collins Brown ’04; and Greg Mehuron ’08; STUART D. CAMPBELL English Teacher, Ski Coach, Author, Consultant Stu grew up in Bennington, Vermont. He graduated from Middlebury College in 1964 with a B.A. in American Literature. While there he was a 4-event ski racer (slalom, giant slalom, cross country, ski jumping). He taught English Literature and coached skiing at Harwood Union and the Valley Junior Racing Club. His interest in skiing took him to Stowe as the Technical Director of the Sepp Ruschp Ski School. Stu has been a tireless advocate of the sport and a profound influence on millions of skiers over his career. In the late 1970s he went to Heavenly Valley, California where he served as Director of Skier Services which meant overseeing ski school, skier services, professional, celebrity and 1985 World Cup ski races. He returned to Stowe in 1997 and led the development, construction and opening of The Country Club of Vermont as he pursued a late-in-life passion for golf. Stu has been an equipment consultant for some 16 different manufacturers. Above all, ski instruction has been the core of his life's work. But it has been through his tireless writing that he has reached his greatest audience. As Technical and Instructional Editor of SKI Magazine for more than 30 years, he reached untold millions of readers with his illustrated quick tips to feature articles. He has authored books on skiing, gardening and alternative house design. ~ m or e ~ Harwood Announces Sixth Annual Hall of Fame Class Page 7 The Vermont Ski Museum awarded Stu the first Paul Robbins Ski Journalism Award in 2008 for lifetime commitment to ski journalism with ethics, humor and good taste. He was inducted into the U.S. Ski and Snowboarding Hall of Fame in 2009. Stu passed away on December 4, 2008. RICHARD L. RUSSELL; WATERBURY CLASS OF 1951 Soccer, Basketball, Baseball Richard was the class president for 3 years, and on the Student Council. Dick participated in baseball (4 yrs.), soccer (2 yrs.) and basketball (3 yrs.; Co-Capt. 1 yr.). He was a member of the State Northern Class B Basketball Champions in 1951 and the State Runner-up Basketball Championship Team in 1951. He graduated with Pro Merito academic recognition as well as receiving the coveted Balfour Award. Dick received his B.S. in Education from the University of Vermont in 1955 and was Commissioned 2nd Lt. USAF from the ROTC program. He played three years of baseball for the university. In 1956 Dick entered the Air Force and retired as a Colonel (0-6) in 1982. He is a graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces and an Honor Graduate of the Defense Language Institute. Dick has 4,680 total pilot flying hours with over 2,000 in the F-100 Super Sabre, including 215 combat hours and 110 combat missions. He has received The Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with cluster, Air Medal with 5 clusters, Combat Readiness Medal with 3 clusters, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Silver Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 4 Clusters and Vietnam Service Medal. Dick taught English at Harwood Union 1984-94 and served as President of the Harwood Union Teachers Association 1988-92. BARBARA BURNS MAYNARD Field Hockey, Basketball, Softball, Golf Coach Barb received her B.S. from the University of Vermont in 1975 and her Master’s in Education in 1993. After graduation she spent time in the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic. She came to Harwood Union as a physical educator and has coached a variety of sports. She coached field hockey 28 yrs. 19772005 (var. 26; JV 2), JV basketball 1977-83 and 2001-’02 (7 yrs.) and assisted the varsity team during their State Runner-up years 1978-79 and 1979-80, softball 21 yrs. 1977-1978 (var. 25; JV 6) and assisted the State Championship Team 1979-80, and golf 4 yrs. During that period of time she coached field hockey state championship teams in 1979, 1982, 1988 with runner-ups in 1989 and 1994 and golf state championship teams in 2003 and 2004 with runner-ups in 2002 and 2005. In 1982 she founded the VT Field Hockey Association. She is a co-founder of the VT-NH Twin State Field Hockey Classic which began in 1984. Barb received the 1998 National Association for Girls and Women in Sport Pathfinder Award. She is a 2002 member of the Northeast Women’s Hall of Fame and a 2006 member of the Vermont Principals’ Association Hall of Fame. Barb has been a physical educator/coach at Harwood Union since 1977-78. TIMOTHY J. CHANT CLASS OF 1981 Soccer, Basketball, Baseball, Track and Field ~ m or e ~ Harwood Announces Sixth Annual Hall of Fame Class Page 8 Tim participated in varsity soccer (4 yrs.; Capt. 1 yr.), varsity basketball (3 yrs.; Capt. 1 yr.), baseball (1 yr.), track and field (2 yrs.). He was selected to the 1980 Times Argus All-League Soccer Team as well as the All-State Soccer Team. The Times Argus selected him for the 1980-81 All-League Basketball Team. Tim was a member of the 1978 Vermont State Championship Baseball Team. Multi-talented Tim switched to track and field and won the Vermont State Championship in the triple jump in 1981. He represented the State of Vermont at the 1981 New England Track and Field Competition in the triple jump event. Tim earned the 1981 Harwood Scholar-Athlete Award. Tim is presently a Wellness Educator at Westwood High School in Warwick, Rhode Island. CODI COLLINS BROWN CLASS OF 2004 Soccer, Basketball, Softball Codi was a participant in varsity soccer (3 yrs.), varsity basketball (4 yrs.; Capt. 2 yrs.) and varsity softball (4 yrs.; Capt. 3 yrs.). She Played on the 2001 Vermont Division II Softball Runners-up Team. She was a 2001, ’03, ‘04 Times Argus Softball All-Star 1st Team and ’02 2nd Team Selection. Burlington Free Press selected her for 1st Team Metro North Softball All-Star. She was selected for the 2004 North/South Softball Classic as well as the VT-NH Twin State Softball Game. She represented Vermont at the 2004 American Softball Association Nationals in North Carolina and was selected for the ASA Gold Glove Award for her defensive ability. Codi was a member of the National Honor Society and received the 2004 Harwood Outstanding Female Athlete Award for her outstanding physical skills, leadership and camaraderie. She received the Central Vermont Academic Scholarship to Norwich University from which she received a B.S. in Nursing, Summa Cum Laude in 2008. Codi is currently a registered nurse at the University of Vermont Medical Center Inpatient Hematology/Oncology where she is chemotherapy and stem cell transplant certified. ~ m or e ~ Harwood Announces Sixth Annual Hall of Fame Class Page 9 GREGORY J. MEHURON CLASS OF 2008 Soccer, Basketball, Baseball Greg participated in varsity soccer (2 yrs.), varsity basketball (3 yrs.; Capt. 1 yr.), and baseball (3 yrs.; Capt. 1 yr.). He participated on the 2007 Vermont Division II State Championship Soccer Team and was selected for the Capital All-League 2nd Team. In 2008 Greg was named Male Finalist for January Athlete of the Month by the VT Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association, Times Argus Basketball Player of the Year, NVAC Capital Division Basketball Player of the Year, Burlington Free Press All-State Basketball 3rd Team, VBCA Senior All-Star Game and VT-NH Twin State Basketball Game. 2007 brought Times Argus Central Vermont Baseball 1st Team and 2nd Team All-Metro honors. 2008 earned Times Argus Baseball Player of the Year, NVAC Capital 1st Team, and VBCA North Senior All-Star Game. Greg’s work ethic, outstanding athletic abilities, leadership and team attitude earned him the 2008 Harwood Union Robert Fielder Award (Most Outstanding Male Athlete). Greg is the site manager for Vermont Professional Construction and Painting and the Assistant Baseball Coach at Lyndon State College. The annual Hall of Fame Induction and Dinner is the highlight of The Legends of Harwood Weekend. The weekend features Silent Auctions, a Golf Tournament, Alumni games and all events are open to the public. Please note that the annual Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction Ceremony have been moved to the fall, and will be held on Saturday September 12, 2015. The dinner has been a sell out each year, and tickets will go on sale in late August.
