April, 2015 Hatchery Cohort 2015 - Resources Mentorship / Coaching You have been introduced to your Mentor over email and should made contact with them, either inperson or online conferencing, before the official Hatchery Launch, May 7. Before the Launch, you should meet as much as necessary to talk about your execution plan over the summer. During the course of the program, we encourage Teams and Mentors to meet at least once a week to build an organic relationship. You should meet frequently in order to talk about new developments, get advice and discuss how to proceed with your startup. Pitch Progression Over the course of the program, we have scheduled 4 Pitch Sessions (schedules below). These sessions are supposed to provide hands-on pitch experience, and serve to lead up to your Demo Day nomination. During the pitches, mentors will be present to give valuable feedback. We suggest that you prepare well for the pitches so that you can optimize the advice you get from the mentors present. The One-on-One sessions are scheduled every day, starting August 17th, leading up to DemoDay. This will be individually scheduled on a first come first served basis. Demoday is scheduled for Thursday, September 10th. Those eligible will pitch to a panel of judges and stand the chance to win prizes from a prize pool totaling $42,500. These discussions will help identify any issues that you may be facing in working through the Business Model Canvas. Below are the topics for each workshop: ● Monday, May 25: Value Proposition The focus here is the problem your venture aims to solve. What is the nature of this problem, and why is your solution valuable for the customer? What are the benefits of your proposed solution? ● Tuesday, May 26: Know Your Market Now that you’ve identified the Value Proposition, the next step is to understand the market. What general category of products/services does your solution fall into? Within that category, what is your niche? Who is going to be using your solution, and who is going to be paying for it? ● Wednesday, May 27: Execution How to identify the key steps needed to bring your venture to fruition? Who are the key partners in your supply chain? What key activities will you need to accomplish, and what resources do you need in order to do so? You should aim to develop a timeline encompassing the next year or so. Identifying what your venture’s key milestones will help you flesh out an execution strategy. ● Thursday, May 28: Thinking Money Your venture’s revenue stream covers the cost structure for your product/service. You will need to identify the key capital and operating costs for your business, and come up with the best estimate. Working to figure out these revenues and expenses clearly will enable you to build a fundamental part of the pitch: the investment proposal. The investment proposal should state how much money you will need to successfully launch your venture. 3 April, 2015 Idea Markets Idea Markets are casual round table peer-to-peer review sessions. For those of you who have been to them during the year, the format is similar. This is to give everyone a chance to pitch their idea to the rest of the cohort for constructive criticism and to foster a sense of community. Emails Each cohort member will have your own @uofthatchery.ca email. This is a Gmail account and the login information is as follows: Login: Password: firstname.lastname@uofthatchery.ca Hatchery2015 Please contact your Connector if you are having trouble logging in. Dashboard At our website (https://hatchery.engineering.utoronto.ca/login/), you will be able to log in to your Hatchery Dashboard using the following name and password: Login: Password: FirstnameLastname2015 1234 (you can change this once you log in) This Dashboard provides you with access to a modifiable Business Model Canvas, which you will use to track your progress. You can update profiles and change your project/company name, industry, team journey, and all business model canvas areas. This is the main tool that you will use to mould and communicate your team’s public image on the Hatchery website. Please note that we will be publishing your team’s Value Proposition as part of a Cohort showcase at the end of the summer. On your Dashboard, we have compiled a series of “Udacity—How to Build A Startup” videos that are a supplementary resource to help you learn about the Business Model Canvas. We suggest you watch these prior to the workshops in May. In addition, your Connector will also be using the Dashboard to provide you with “Pitch Minutes”. These will provide your team with a summary of the main key points and feedback from your pitches. Asana We will be using Asana to help each team manage your workflow (organize your projects and tasks). You will have access to this resource through your Dashboard. This is the main platform where you will communicate as a team between your Mentors and Connectors so that everyone will be on the same page. We hope that this will be a useful tool for your work over the summer. 4 April, 2015 Resources ● Business Cards Creating your own business cards is an option during the cohort, provided that you have a design ready and it is in keeping with the dimensions and format required. Please speak to your respective Connectors if you are interested in this. ● MaRS Market Research The Hatchery has coordinated with MaRS' – BAP program and the Toronto Public Library access to Market Research services. Please coordinate your requests with your connector. ● Other Resources are abundant if you keep your eye out for them. Your mentors are invaluable assets to your development and production process, but they are not your only asset. If you require expert advice in a specific area, the Hatchery can help you connect with specialists for consultation. 5
