About The Building Green™ Council
Mission : To make green building the norm for residential and commercial construction in
Central Oregon.
Green Building is “innovative building and site design techniques that improve the quality and
performance of buildings while simultaneously reducing stress on the environment.”
Green Building is a whole systems approach to design, construction, and operation of buildings
with three converging fundamental objectives: increase energy efficiency, improve indoor air
quality and conserve natural resources.
Across the country, people are increasingly demanding these green values in new and remodeled homes as well as the commercial and public
buildings in which they spend time. For some, the primary driver is energy savings and lower utility bills. For others, it’s knowing that homes
are safer for children or work places more productive for employees.
For still others it’s about preserving old growth forests or reducing
global warming while ensuring a sustainable supply of beautiful, highly
functional building materials.
At the moment, about 54 percent of energy consumption in the
United State is linked to buildings and their construction. Buildings
account for 35 percent or more of CO2 emissions in the United
States, one quarter of the world’s wood harvest and one sixth of the
world’s freshwater withdrawals. Up to 30 percent of North American
landfill space is taken up by construction and demolition debris. All
of these unsustainable rates of consumption/pollution can be greatly
reduced—just by building differently—with far better air quality and
lower operating costs in the bargain.
The Building Green Council of Central Oregon™ and this site are
LEED Home by SolAire Homebuilders
intended to provide comprehensive information and contact with
Central Oregon green building resources to give builders and homeowners the methods and materials to design and build this different,
greener way.
Welcome to the first Recycle/Reuse Guide for residents, builders
and contractors throughout Central Oregon! This guide is a collaborative effort between the Community Affairs Committee of the Central
Oregon Building Green Council and the Central Oregon Environmental
Center. It is designed to be a comprehensive tool and resource for the
community and is the result of many months of gathering information,
verifying with recyclers/vendors, and designing this guide to be as
user-friendly as possible.
Reusing and recycling are important aspects of the “Reduce-ReuseRecycle” solution to resource consumption, but reducing our consumption in the first place is a key component to minimizing our
environmental impact. Every item that we bring into our homes and
workplaces is the result of many resources- raw materials, time, energy,
fossil fuels, and more. Reusing, recycling or disposing of these items
results in the further use of these resources as well.
In 2006, approximately 60% of the total tonnage into Knott Landfill
was comprised of Construction & Demolition (C&D) Waste, and about
40% was comprised of household waste. The current life expectancy of
Knott Landfill is that it will be at full capacity by as early as 2029 based
on incoming tonnage throughout 2007 & 2008.
Tim Hester from the Central Oregon Environmental Center. It does not
include specific pricing information or details regarding the desired
condition of the materials being accepted. It is, therefore, essential that
you call any & all of the vendors listed here ahead of time to confirm
acceptance of materials.
We welcome your feedback on how this guide is/is not working for you
and we’re open to your suggestions on how to make it better! Drop
us a line at 389-1058 if you find a misprint with materials or contact
information so we can update the next version.
Most importantly, we intentionally limited production of hard copies
of this guide to encourage the use of the paper-free, downloadable
version that is available online at www.coba.org.
Thanks so much and happy recycling/reusing!

Central Oregon Recycle/Reuse Guide
Did You Know?
(From the Deconstruction Institute website)
Each year the U.S buries about 33 million tons of wood-related
construction and demolition debris in our landfills. This will release
about 5 million tons of greenhouse gases in the form of methane
during decomposition. This is equivalent to the yearly emissions of
3,736,000 passenger cars.
The average single-family home contains 5,174 pounds of steel
and 1,830 pounds of plastics. Net greenhouse gas reduction from
recycling this material is 2,956 pounds, a benefit equivalent to the
annual CO2 absorption of 114 trees.
Every ton of wood that is reused avoids the creation of 60 pounds
of greenhouse gases that would have been created to harvest and
mill new lumber.
Keeping the lumber and panel products for a 2,000 square foot
house out of the landfill will avoid the generation of greenhouse
gases comparable to removing 2.86 passenger cars from the road.
Recycling the steel and plastic would reduce greenhouse gas production by an amount equal to the absorption of 113.6 trees. Reusing the wood avoids the production of 500 pounds of greenhouse
gases.
(From The Green Spot website)
Total waste generated in 2001 = 229 million tons (before recycling)
Paper: 35.7%; Yard trimmings 12.2%; Food scraps 11.4%; Plastics
11.1%; Metals 7.9%; Rubber, leather & textiles 7.1%; Glass 5.5%;
Wood 5.7%; Other 3.4%.
Recycling, including composting diverted 68 million tons of material away from landfills & incinerators in 2001.
1960: 2.7 pounds of waste produced per person per day
2001: 4.4 pounds of waste produced per person per day

The Deschutes County Department of Solid Waste
The Central Oregon Recycle/Reuse
Guide is made possible due to a
generous contribution from the
Deschutes County Department of
Solid Waste.
The Department of Solid Waste
takes pride in providing a safe
place for residents to dispose of or
recycle unwanted materials. With
four Transfer Stations near Redmond, Sisters, and La Pine, and a
major Landfill in Bend, citizens are assured easy access to fit with
their busy schedules. The Department also offers money-saving
collection events throughout the year, such as a Tire Event, Appliance Event, and Household Hazardous Waste. On this website,
you will find information regarding everything from rates & fees,
directions, and hours of operation to recycling, hazardous waste
disposal, and asbestos regulations.

The Central Oregon Recycle/Reuse Guide is the result of a wide variety of people in our
community who are passionate about our environment and the natural beauty of Central Oregon. We have a desire to improve its sustainability, and preserve and protect it for future
generations. The production of the guide was made financially possible through a generous
grant from the Deschutes County Solid Waste Department. Support was also provided by
Earth Advantage as well as the companies whose employees were allowed to spend valuable
work time creating this guide. Those individuals and companies are listed on page one. As
it is our intent to keep this guide as responsible as the individuals and companies listed in it,
we will only be printing a small amount of these guides. It is available for download at
www.coba.org
Printing for this issue of the Recycle/Reuse guide was made possible through
a generous donation from Moonlight Mailing & Printing Inc.
