 A Note From Our Substance Abuse & Prevention Counselor, Mrs. Susan Robertson:
Marijuana Tool Kit- What You Need to Know to Talk with Your Teen about Marijuana
If you haven’t had a conversation with your child about marijuana, now is the time and here is
the tool kit to help you. A free download from the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids will help
guide you through this discussion.
Marijuana is a hot topic and the facts can be confusing. That’s why it is important for parents to
protect their kids’ health and future by talking early and often. Families can navigate through
new policies like legalization, as well as new products, like “edible” candies and cookies.
Marijuana is often one of the first drugs a teen is offered. In fact, 41% of teen smokers say they
began before the age of 15. Unfortunately, national debates on the legalization of marijuana have
helped normalize the behavior for many teens. 78% of teens say that they have close friends who
use marijuana. That’s why it’s important that your child understands that you don’t approve of
his/her use of marijuana, in the same way that you don’t want him/her to smoke cigarettes or
electronic cigarettes, drink alcohol or use other drugs.
