Position Title: SHFB Volunteer and Resource Coordinator Location: Second Harvest Food Bank – 750 Curtner Ave. San Jose, CA 95125 - 2113 Service Period: August 2015 – August 2016 Description of Second Harvest Food Bank (SHFB): Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties is the trusted leader dedicated to ending local hunger. Since its inception in 1974, Second Harvest has become one of the largest food banks in the nation, providing food to nearly one quarter of a million people each month. The Food Bank mobilizes individuals, companies, and community partners to connect people to the nutritious food they need. More than half of the food distributed is healthy, fresh produce. Second Harvest also plays a leading role in promoting federal nutrition programs and educating families on how to make healthier food choices. In fiscal year 2014 (July 2013 - June 2014), SHFB distributed over 54 million pounds of nutritious food to low-income people in need in our two counties. SHFB provides food efficiently through our innovative direct-service programs and by collaborating with a network of more than 330 partner non-profit agencies operating at 770 different food distribution sites. Partner agencies include shelters, pantries, soup kitchens, children's programs, senior meal sites, and residential programs. Throughout the fiscal year, volunteers contributed nearly 316,000 hours of service. Position Description: The Volunteer and Resource Coordinator will work closely with our existing partners and new and existing community collaborations to extend our reach into underserved communities. They will provide training and support to organizations who want to serve more people and distribute more food. Primary Duties: • • • • • • • • • Conduct assessments of existing Produce Mobile sites to determine best practices and areas of process improvement to alleviate drop-off in participation Participate in community and coalition meetings to conduct outreach for new partner organizations that manage the Produce Mobile program for Second Harvest Food Bank. Participate in general outreach such as marketing material distribution and press releases to ethnic media that reach underserved populations and help connect them to Second Harvest Food Bank services and to clothing, rental assistance, and healthcare services Work closely with partner organizations (schools, community centers, faith based groups, and other nonprofits that reach underserved populations) to implement identified best practices such as distribution set up to increase efficiency and record keeping processes Conduct direct outreach to recruit potential volunteers at Produce Mobile sites and for the Community Ambassadors Project, creating community leaders in these communities Identify potential volunteers for the Community Ambassadors Project Manage a database tracking system to track recruited volunteers and beneficiaries receiving food services to monitor grant targets of distributing at least 50,000 lbs of produce and training at least 100 community volunteers Record and report on data aligned with VISTA performance measures Attend monthly professional development trainings Preferred Skills and Abilities: • • • Excellent communication skills (both writing and public speaking) High level of organization and time management Data management skills (managing large databases of information, and teasing out what the data means via charts, graphs, etc.) • Knowledge in health and food insecurity • Computer Literacy Skills (Office, Word, Google Docs, Dropbox) • Culturally competent and comfortable in multicultural community Application Instructions: To apply to the SHFB Volunteer and Resource Coordinator VISTA position, please send your cover letter and resume to Susan Takalo stakalo@shfb.org .
