Dear Parents:
Thank you for the opportunity to work with you in the education of your
sons and daughters. We enjoyed the opportunity to work with you during
conference week to make sure your student’s needs were being met and to
put faces with the many emails we have been sharing with you as a school.
No matter how much we try to communicate electronically or through writing
the face to face experience is always much better. Please let us know if
your conference experience was not what you needed and we will follow-up
so you are able to have the communication that you need.
The Prom dance is fast approaching. There are styles of dress that
would not be appropriate for the usual school day and yet are acceptable
for formal dances. That does not mean that there are no standards at all.
Please read the following carefully as students who arrive at a dance
wearing an inappropriate outfit will be refused admittance. As you and your
child are shopping for semi-formal attire for prom, please keep the following
in mind.
Dress/Skirts must be at least mid-thigh in length
Backless dresses that dip below the wearer’s waist will not be permitted
No sheer/see-through dresses and no see-through sides or bare sides
No excessively low cut dresses or tops (no cleavage showing)
No bare midriffs
Shoes must be worn at all times
Boys will be expected to match the prevailing standard of formality for
the given dance
Students wearing clothes clothing that do not meet these standards will
be refused admission to the event and will not receive refunds on prepurchased tickets.
Everyone involved wants our Hockinson dances to be a safe and fun
time for all students. During March and April, ASB students will be making
several announcements, showing videos, discussing what behaviors and
outfits are acceptable and contrasting them with examples of those that are
not. Please help us create an environment at our dances that all can enjoy
and of which all can be proud. If you have questions, please contact us at
448-6450
Hello Hockinson families!
Spring is in the air and with it the excitement of new possibilities. I am happy to report
that our libraries remain busy and our students engaged in reading. Here are some of
the things you might hear students talking about:
Public Library Partnership
As I mentioned in the February newsletter, I have been meeting monthly with our public
librarians to find ways of partnering to share our resources and provide more
opportunities to all. Some of our efforts include providing public library cards to
students, promoting the Summer Reading Program, and providing training to students
on the many digital resources available through the public library system, as well as our
own.
Storyline
Did you know we have a Storyline, where you can call in 24 hours a day to hear a
story? It is updated weekly, and there is no limit on how many times you can call.
Currently, the recording is of different groups of students from Mrs. Fern’s 3rd grade
class performing Reader’s Theatre. Call Storyline at #360-448-6484. What a great way
to read!
Booktalks
When I started giving booktalks this year at the elementary and middle school, I had no
idea how popular they would be. A booktalk is basically a commercial for a book, and
students love them! If I booktalk a book, it is always checked out and has an average of
18 holds by the end of the day! Even more exciting is that students are now giving
booktalks. I give them time at the end of checkout for anyone who wants to, and for
some classes, I’ve had to start a waitlist for that too!
New Books
A BIG thank you to everyone, who supported the Fall Book Fair! It is so much fun to put
new books out and watch student’s faces light up when they see them. It is also
gratifying to see how many of our books have a “donated by PWT” sticker.
Please feel welcome to contact me with any questions, and thank you for your
continued support of our libraries!

Apprenticeships: Seniors interested in
starting an apprenticeship next year should
check out Washington’s Labor & Industries
webpage at
http://www.lni.wa.gov/TradesLicensing/App
renticeship/default.asp. Click on the “join
email list” button to get updates on
apprenticeship openings. Apprenticeship is a
combination of on-the-job training (OJT)
and related classroom instruction under the
supervision of a journey-level craft person
or trade professional in which workers learn
the practical and theoretical aspects of a
highly skilled
occupation. (http://www.lni.wa.gov/Trades
Licensing/Apprenticeship/About/WhatIs/def
ault.asp)
Job Corps: Seniors interested in furthering
their job skills and education should
visit www.recruiting.jobcorps.gov. The
Job Corps is free to eligible young people
and provides food,
housing, and hands-on training and
education to prepare students for a good
job. The Job Corps also assists graduates
for up to 12 months in job placement,
housing, health care, family services, and
transportation. The Job Corps is operated
by the U.S. Department of Labor.
Juniors: Students should be aware that the
final transcript at the conclusion of their
junior year will be the one that colleges look
at for initial admission decisions. Students
are encouraged to finish the academic year
strong so as to improve their chances of
getting accepted at the college or trade
school of their choice.
Now is the time for college-bound studentathletes in the junior class to register with
the NCAA Eligibility Center if they plan on
participating in college athletics. The
registration process can be done by
accessing http://www.ncaa.org/studentathletes/future and selecting the blue
registration box. Be sure to also check in
with your high school counselor, Mrs.
Hermann, as she will guide you through the
NCAA process. Please contact Mrs.
Hermann at Vickie.hermann@hocksd.org
with questions.
All students and families can make an
appointment in the College and Career
Center, located in the library!

Seven HHS musicians were selected to
participate in the 26th annual Pacific
Lutheran University Northwest High School
Honor Band. These students traveled to
PLU the weekend of January 9th to
rehearse with students from over 80 other
high schools in the Pacific
Northwest. Guest conductors for the
event included Dr. Sarah McKoin of Texas
Tech University and Dr. Damon Talley of
Louisiana State University. The students
selected were Elena Allison, Caidin Cheney,
Caty Cook, Monica Krubeck, Josh Morris,
Deena Oubari, and Dylan Rankin.
For the FIFTH year in a row, the Hockinson
High School Jazz Band took first place in the
AA division at the 53rd annual Clark College
Jazz Festival this past Friday. This is a
major accomplishment by all of our
students, but particularly by our senior class
who have never in their high school career
placed lower than 1st at this festival! Band
members Caidin Cheney (trombone) and
Josh Gonzales (drums) also took home
awards for outstanding soloists. Their next
competition will be Saturday, March 14 at
the Newport High School Jazz Festival in
Bellevue.
BAND ON THE RUN On behalf of Mr. McEnry and present and
future band students at Hockinson High
School, we would like to offer our sincerest
thanks to the Hockinson community for
approving the Proposition 1 School Bond on
February 10. We are excited to finally have
dedicated music space at the high school
for rehearsing and growing as young
musicians. With your support, the
Hockinson Band Program will continue its
traditions of excellence in music and in
supporting and enriching our school and
community.
The Hockinson Middle and High School
music programs, in conjunction with the
Hockinson Music Boosters and Music
World, coordinated and hosted the 2nd
annual North County Honor Band February
20th and 21st, 2015 at Hockinson Middle
and High Schools. Select middle and high
school students from the Hockinson, Battle
Ground, Ridgefield, La Center, Woodland,
Camas, and Washougal school
districts rehearsed for the weekend and
presented a free concert in the HHS
Auditorium on Saturday, February
21st. These students were selected based
on recommendations from their directors,
as well as short essays about their musical
accomplishments and future goals. The
middle school honor band was conducted
by longtime Oregon music educator and
current Portland State University faculty
member, Dan Ogren. The high school band
was under the direction of Dr. Christopher
Chapman, director of bands at Oregon State

More than 30 high school students
participated in the annual Lower Columbia
River Music Educators Association Solo and
Ensemble Festival on Saturday, February 28
at Union High School. Soloists and groups
of students prepared a piece to play for a
judge, with one student on each instrument
scoring high enough qualifying for the state
solo and ensemble competition at Central
Washington University on April 24 and
25. Students from all high schools
regardless of school size competed against
each other. At Hockinson, freshman oboist
Shannon Dally was chosen as the
outstanding soloist in her category and will
represent our region at the state
competition. Senior trombonist Caidin
Cheney was selected as 1st alternate to
state. Other solos and ensembles receiving
superior scores included the HHS
Percussion Ensemble, the HHS Saxophone
Quartet (Alexander Lee, Christopher
Dahdouh, Jesse Smith, and Will Gaines), and
soloists Dennis Baciuc (trumpet), Caty Cook
(flute), and Riley Lyons (trombone).
The HHS Wind Ensemble traveled to
Western Washington University in
Bellingham, WA on Friday and Saturday,
March 6 and 7, to participated in the WWU
Concert Band Invitational. The Wind
Ensemble was one of only 8 bands selected
to participate in this festival and the only
band from Southwest Washington. The
band also did a private clinic on the way to
Western at Pacific Lutheran University with
members of their music faculty. The band
would like to thank the Hockinson School
District and the Hockinson Music Boosters
for their financial support in making this
trip happen.
Mark your calendars for the 8th annual
HOCKINSON MUSIC BOOSTER BENEFIT
DINNER, CONCERT, AND AUCTION! The
event will take place Saturday, April 25 at
Hockinson High School and feature
performances by the various ensembles in
our award-winning music program. The
evening will feature music, activities, and
decor fitting our "Classic Television" theme,
and in addition to a gourmet dinner will
include exciting raffle and silent auction
items. Tickets will go on sale soon at

actively searching for donations. If you
have a vacation home you would be willing
to donate for a weekend, a specific skill or

What’s up with the Boosters?
As usual, your HHS Booster board is hard at work! Our focus at the moment is organizing and
planning Hockinson Fun Days. It will be here before you know it so be sure to mark your
calendars for the weekend of May 29 – 30.
This year’s Fun Days event will include all of the activities you know and love: Friday night
Bingo, pancake breakfast at the fire station, parade, marketplace bazaar, alumni gathering, a
community carnival and some new activities including a Friday evening Fun Run and the 2nd
annual Bed Races. For more information, you can check out the website:
http://hockinsonboosters.com/Fun_Days.html. Our next Fun Days planning meeting is
Wednesday, March 25th from 7:30 – 8:30 in the HHS library – please consider attending the
meeting to see how you can get involved!
The Fun Days Bed Races was introduced last year and was a hilarious and fun event that your
group won’t want to miss out on! The Bed Race organizers would like to get racing teams set up
in advance this year. Five people per team (four to push and one to steer); beds are provided,
pajamas or costumes are encouraged and participation is free. Better luck to the football team
this year! If you would like to register or get more information, please contact Erin McClelland
at e.mcclelland@yahoo.com.
Grad Night 2016: The Grad Night committee for 2016 is in the process of being formed. If you
would like to help plan and support next year’s Sr. Grad Night, please contact Christi Carlson at
ccarlson225@gmail.com or (360) 798-7154.
AmazonSmile: The Booster’s mission is to support athletic, academic and activities programs at
the high school. Doing this requires on-going fundraising. One of the easy ways you can help is
by setting up AmazonSmile which is a simple and automatic way for you to support your HHS
boosters every time you shop at Amazon, at no cost to you. When you use AmazonSmile, you’ll
find the same prices and selection as
Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate a portion of your purchase price to
our booster club.
To shop at AmazonSmile simply go to smile.amazon.com and select Hockinson High School
Athletic and Activities Booster Club. They will remember your selection, and then every eligible
purchase you make at smile.amazon.com will result in a donation. Thanks for your support!
Booster Emails: Many of you receive emails from the boosters with information about
community and high school events. If you would like to be added to our email distribution list,
please send an email to hendies199@msn.com asking to be added. This list is not shared or sold
and you can easily unsubscribe at any time.
CTE NEWS!
Microsoft IT Academy (ITA) program provides industry-leading technology skills to help bridge
the skills gap.
With the Microsoft IT Academy (ITA) program, academic institutions and students get digital
curriculum and certifications for fundamental technology skills -- as well as courses critical for
students to be successful in today’s technologically evolving world.
Hockinson High School students are studying Microsoft IT Academy in their Digital
Communication class. The curriculum delivers a complete learning and teaching framework
developed specifically for use in an academic setting.
The goal for the students is to practice the necessary skills to pass an exam that will certify them
in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. The benefits of this certification include the ability
for students to objectively shows employers their level of knowledge; demonstrate their skills on
the latest technologies, and have a firm measure and increased confidence in their skills,
To date, 12 Hockinson High School students have become certified in MS Word, with the
remainder of the students honing their skills before their attempt at certification.
Congratulations on those who have become certified, and good luck to the students who will
soon be testing.
