HEALTHY HIKURANGI
Thanks Hikurangi! What a great turn out for the Fun-RunWalk held in conjunction with Neighbours Day on the 29th of
March. There were plenty of activities down at Waro Lake
and we finished with the fun-run-walk. We would like to
thank the following groups/organisations without whose help
the day would not have happened:
Hikurangi Mountain Lions for their volunteer time and generous prize donation, Hikurangi Masonic Lodge for their
sausage sizzle no doubt we would have gone hungry otherwise, Hikurangi & Whangarei Maori Wardens for their
volunteer support maintaining road safety for the participants,
Kia Tupato for handling the road safety plan and everything
related, Rouse Motorcycles for the use of 2 vehicles which
enabled us to do trips round the lake and also ferry participants to the start line, Friendship House for their volunteer
labour.
We would also like to thank our sponsors for giving so
generously A1 Signs : Hikurangi Educare : Ringrose Stockfeeds :
Northland Vet Group : Miner’s Rest Café : Farmlands :
Charlotte Dawn : McDonalds Kamo
Our thanks also to Kristi Henare for her supporting role in our
Neighbours Day activities.

Hikurangi Volunteer Fire Brigade
Hi Hikurangi
We have now moved and the demolition of the old station is
beginning. We will be giving you updates here in the bulletin
when we hear things - the goal is for monthly updates.
Now we will be working out of the pallet factory, we will have
no siren as you may have noticed, we will be relying on pager
and text messages. We will still be operating as normal when
we do get calls, someone will be on the road at the southern
end of Guyco to stop traffic.
Hint: When you have come around those southern corners
before at Guyco and you see a row of cars from approximately
the field entrance there’s a good chance its us. Please slow
down and be ready to stop as we leap from our cars and run
across the road. People on the road should keep clear easy
paths for the trucks. Be aware the trucks need both sides of
the road to get out of Guyco heading south.
The brigade would like to thank those in the community who
have helped with storage of things while we are out of the
station - the museum, hall and dairy to name a few. Also big
thanks to the Lions Club for their help at our farewell dinner
to the old station. It was a good night had by all.
As you would have noticed the fire ban is off and people are
burning their rubbish. Please be safe with your burn off, watch
it, have plenty of water readily available, monitor wind, have a
clear area around it. Any info on having a safe burn off can be
found at havingafire.org.nz , fire.org.nz or contact the fire station.
The Ambulance Service is as busy as we are, which is why
you may see us first instead of the ambulance you first called
for. Take care on the road, drive to the conditions, be considerate of your fellow drivers and when tired please rest. Better
to take a half hour break than to use us to come call on you in
our big red truck.
With the brigades 100th Anniversary of service to the Hikurangi Community coming up we want to hold an event to mark
this occasion. We are currently in the planning stage and are
looking for fundraising ideas. As we work on a few ideas keep
an eye out for events you might be keen on.
The Mitre 10 BBQ was a hit on the 21st of March and this
weekend the 18th of April we are doing it all again, aiming for
bigger and better.
In May the fire brigade has been picked for the Z “good in the
hood” token drop in Kamo and we are up against some tough
competition. Please help us out with this. Fill up at Z Kamo,
vote for us, tell your mates, your family, post it on facebook it
will all help. Posters will go up around town as soon as the
dates are confirmed.
March has been quiet so far. For the last month we had 9 calls:
19/3 Fire in Paddock Substation Lane, 20/3 Car Fire Whakapara, 20/3 Grass Fire Oakura, 27/3 Transformer Sparking
Hukerenui, 28/3 Tanker To Shed Fire Whangarei Heads, 30/3
Whakapara Marae (Last Call for the old station), 30/3 Van to
Motorcycle crash Apotu Road, 4/4 Fire In Area Whakapara,
6/4 Fire In Area Whakapara, 15/4 Truck on Side Hikurangi
Bypass.
That’s all that there is for this month.

attended our Open Day on March 28th.
It was a beautiful day and a good day was
had by all. We would also like to thank
Tracey and the Hikurangi Primary School
Kapa Haka Group.
Thanks must also go to the volunteers who
attended this as well because without their
hard work these events could not happen.

HIKURANGI BOWLING CLUB
Congratulations to Betty Mitchell and Manu Timoti who
won the singles and pairs at the recent Regional Championships and are now representing Northland & Hikurangi in the NZ Finals in Tauranga.
Well done to Savanna Lauder who qualified in the NZ
Under 21 singles and reached the quarter finals before
being beaten in a very close match.
Well done to you Savanna.
Next month will see the Annual General Meeting of the
club being held. Nominations are now being called for
positions within the Club and all members are eligible to
put their names forward. Nomination forms are available
at the club rooms. At this meeting we will also be adopting a new Club Constitution updating one that was made
when both Men and Women amalgamated in 1989.
I would like to officially thank the club sponsors that we
have on board. These include Melva at the Hikurangi
Hotel, Guyco Contractors, North End Contracting, Steve
Taylor Tyres, Independent Breweries, Hikurangi Four
Square. Without your support of the Club in many ways,
we would struggle to survive.
Winter bowls will start at the beginning of June and we
hold tournaments every Thursday and every second
Sunday.
We are currently awaiting an update of the artificial turf
at the Club and appreciate the support that we have received from ASB Community Trust in financing this.
Don’t forget that the club is open on Friday from 4pm for
a club night and social activities as well as every tournament day.

The Farmer had a rope hanging from a dead
tree at his back door.
What’s that for? asked the visitor.
“Its my weather guide.” the old farmer replied.
“If its swinging back and forth, its windy and if
its wet its raining.”
A man lay sprawled across three entire seats in a theater.
When the usher came by and noticed this he whispered
to the man: ‘Sorry sir, but you’re only allowed one seat.’
The man groaned but didn't budge.
The usher became impatient. ‘Sir’, he said, ‘if you don’t
get up from there I’m going to have to call the manager.’
Again, the man just groaned, which infuriated the usher,
who turned and marched briskly back up the isle in
search of his manager. In a few moments, both the usher
and the manager returned and stood over the man.
Together the two of them tried repeatedly to move him,
but with no success. Finally , they summoned the Police.
The cop surveyed the situation briefly. ‘All right buddy,
what’s your name?
‘Sam,’ the man moaned. ‘Where you from, Sam?
The cop asked.
‘The balcony,’ replied the man.
