Upcoming Speakers
Please join us at noon on May 14th at the Holmen American Legion for our monthly
HBA meeting. This month, Bill Soper of the La Crosse Area Family YMCA will
provide an update on the current capital expansion project including YMCA-North,
YMCA-La Crosse, and the Community Teen Center. In June, we welcome a guest
speaker from the Holmen Area Community Center.

Speaker of the Month Recap
Last month our guest speaker was Vicki Markussen with the Chamber of
Commerce, and the topic was “Spotlight on New Business Growth with the
Chamber.” The Chamber of La Crosse began in 1868 and currently has 775
members. They recently purchased the former Associated Bank technology
building, a 20,000 square-foot facility, and secured several tenants including 7
Rivers Alliance, the Charmant Hotel, and Wisconsin Economic Development.
Sharing equipment (copy machines, phone systems and general overhead costs)
provides a cost savings to the tenants as well as the Chamber.
The Business Expo sponsored by the Chamber was revamped to accommodate
different types of businesses by starting with a breakfast for small businesses and
then a lunch for bigger businesses. It was a huge success. An education event was
held last month, and there will be opportunities for sales training, servant
leadership sessions, and access to human resource professionals for small
businesses.

HAHS invites you to attend their monthly meetings which are held the first
Wednesday of each month, beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Holmen Village Hall,
unless otherwise noted.
May 6: “Coulee Region Ski Jumping.” Pastor Glenn Borreson will share his
research into the local history of this popular winter pastime. His article, “From
Telemark to Tamarack,” in the Wisconsin Magazine of History won critical
acclaim.
June 3: “Hear Here.” Dr. Ariel Beaujot, History Professor at UW-L, will speak
about this innovative approach to acquiring and presenting public history. Local,
personal stories at key geographic points in the La Crosse downtown become
available to passersby through toll-free numbers on street level signs.
July 1: “My Work, My Memories.” Our story circles have become a popular July
program. Members and guests will share stories and artifacts from their early
work history in the area.

set regular hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday “It’s the
personal touch,” Randall said of what distinguishes their business. “We’re

I started Rugroden Drafting & Design in August of 2002 to create an independent design & drafting service that
would make the home building process less stressful and more enjoyable for the customer. I feel that if you start
with a complete set of plans and are able to see those plans in a three-dimensional format before any construction is
started, there will be fewer, if any, "surprises" on site for the homeowner and the builder, making the process much
easier for everyone.
I have been designing and drafting homes for over 23 years; being previously employed by local builders gave me the

Holmen Area Foundation Community Breakfast

Holmen residents Len and Sandy Beranek have served
their community more than pizza. The former owners
of the Pizza Corral were recognized for their years of
service to the community at the Holmen Area
Foundation’s 10th annual Community Breakfast. The
Beraneks were presented the 2015 Fred Frick Servant
Leadership Award at the April 23 breakfast held at the
Holland Town Hall.
Before retiring, the Beraneks were the long-time
owners and operators of the Pizza Corral in Holmen as
well as other business ventures. “These days, they call
themselves retired, but while they may be retired from
the responsibility of business, both are far from retired
from giving to this community,” said Mary Lin
Wershofen, announcing the couple as this year’s
honorees. “Sandy and Len continue to add to their 50
years of believing in this community and in helping this
community.”
The Beraneks’ service to the community demonstrated
servant leadership in their willingness to help with
community projects and assist those in the community
who had a need. “Neither one was ever afraid of
getting their hands dirty for a cause,” said Wershofen.
“Both have been extensively generous with their time
and talents, regularly volunteering on community
projects, assisting residents in need, offering their
helping hands to enrich the community in countless
ways.” Although no longer operating a business, the
couple doesn’t intend to retire from helping worthy
causes. In his brief remarks after receiving the award,
Len indicated the couple would likely still be involved
in such projects as the Holmen Area Community Center.
“We are passionately excited about the Community
Center,” said Len.
The project to build a multi-generational community center
has been making considerable progress over the past few
months. Laurie Kessler, an organizer for the HACC, gave an
update on that progress, showing the new branding for the
project and concept designs for the building. The land for
the project has been acquired through support from the
town of Holland. Last December, the Holland Town Board
voted to use funds designated for recreation projects it
received from the CapX2020 high-voltage transmission line
project to purchase land owned by St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
Parish. Along with an adjacent lot donated by Dan McHugh,
the land acquired for the community center is about five
acres. The parcel is located within the village of Holmen
along McHugh Drive near Holmen High School.
Helping the youth of the Holmen area is a large part of the
Foundation’s mission. President Ruth Scholze reported on
funds the organization distributed through its Random Acts
Kindness program. Grants awarded to the Holmen School
District have been used to cover field trip expenses for
students, purchase eye glasses when needed, buy a car seat
for a special needs student and fill other needs. The
Foundation also provides scholarships for local students.
Tracy Johnson, the mother of two students who have been
awarded Foundation scholarships, shared how the support
received through the scholarships helped her son, Bennett,
receive the education he wanted. She related how he
intends to bring the knowledge he’s gained in finance and
business back to the area to help local residents with their
investments. “Bennett is ready to give back to the
community,” said Johnson. “These scholarships are
wonderful things.” Another of Johnson’s sons, Griffin, was
last year’s recipient of a Holmen Area Foundation
scholarship.
This is the 10th year the Foundation has held the annual
breakfast; 100 area members of the community turned out
for the meal and award presentation.

NEW POLICE STATION – Open House
Saturday, May 30 from 10:00 a.m. to Noon
If you’ve noticed the new building off Wall and
Main Street, it’s the new Village Police Station. It’s
looking better every day, as the outer brick work is
falling into place.
Join us for our Open House on May 30 from 10:00
a.m. to Noon. The employees will start moving in
that afternoon and the next day, and they are
planning to be open for business on Monday, June
1st in the new location.
There will be a new lighted “Police Department”
sign on the corner of Wall & Main Street. The
month of May will show major differences in the
park area, including landscaping.
Radio Wins Again.

In a recent survey done for car dealers, 28,000
consumers +18, were asked about vehicle and brand
preferences as well as advertising and influencers.
Here's what they also found:
When it comes to in-dash options and entertainment
while driving, radio ranks #1 by a good margin.
Among all age groups, AM/FM radio was the top
"must-have" in any new vehicle they may buy/lease.

Radio advertising was the top medium to
influence their selection. Website ads and TV/cable
ads were noted as second and third influences,
followed by newspaper, direct mail and outdoor.
Radio was seen as being particularly effective within
30 days of purchase/lease.
