Isla Rush, from Holt, competes in Track, Road and Time Trials cycling. She already has an impressive portfolio of accolades under her belt and is currently ranked 10th in the country of her age group (Youth A girls). NNDC and Place for People are supporting Isla’s training by giving her free use of the gym and pool at Splash Leisure and Fitness Centre. Tom FitzPatrick, Leader for North Norfolk District Council said: “The council is committed to showing strong support for athletes in the local community to help them reach their potential. I have been active in sport as a competitor, coach and official and believe it is an ideal way for young people to make the most of their abilities.” Isla’s accolades have included representing the Eastern Region twice at the UK School Games (Road inter-regionals 2013, Track inter-regionals 2014), as well as cycling for the Eastern Region at Road inter-regionals. She also holds titles of being the 2013 U14 Girls National Circuit, 25 Mile and Hill Climb Champion. Glyn Williams, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services added: “The Olympics in 2012 provided a wonderful opportunity to boost aspiring athletes and for everyone to participate in sport across the country. It is important we champion local future stars such as Isla and help in any way we can to support her aspirations to become a top level cyclist.” Isla said: “I really want to thank the council and Place for People for allowing me free access to train at Splash. My training is invaluable to my performance. I started off doing triathlons and competitive swimming before I started cycling, I currently ride for a team called WyndyMilla. My goal at the moment is to race in Belgium in the Spring. In the future I would love to be a professional cyclist living in Europe and racing for a pro continental team.” Pictured in the photograph from left to right: Tom FitzPatrick, Isla Rush and Glyn Williams. The children were invited to come to school in home clothes to raise money for Red Nose Day, and to wear something red with the option of making their face look funny. There were some brilliant outfits and some very funny faces on display around the School. As well as being a fun day for the children, they helped raise money for a very worthwhile cause. NR25 6BS THE MINNI HOUSE CLUB, NORTH NORFOLK NW The Minnihouse Club was formed in September 1995 when the original Norfolk Club split into two, The Norwich Dolls House Club and the Minni House Club. It was hoped that it might attract anything between fourteen and twenty members. Amazingly, the club membership in December 1995 stood at forty five and we met once a month at the Methodist Hall in Cromer. The annual subscription was £10.00. To give you some idea of how the first few club session operated, a December 1995 newsletter states, “Our first workshop meeting in October produced in the region of twenty two trays and eight rolling pins and firescreens. Have you finished yours yet? Have you had trouble? If you need help please ask. Our second workshop in November covered many aspects of needlework, from patchwork to quilting and many other points from needles!” In 2015 the Minni House Club now has 35 members and meets on the second Thursday of each month, apart from August, in Bodham Village Hall from 2.00pm - 4.00pm and Mary Luh is our Chairman. We have a very active programme, which this year includes a miniature Christmas scene in a cup and saucer, handbag and cake making, paperclay and curtain making. At our AGM recently, we duly elected our new committee and had a very enjoyable talk from Mike Turner on how to make realistic looking stone floors and plastered walls. In April, Caz is demonstrating papercraft, which I think is new to all of us. We shall also be holding a workshop in April to learn how to wig a doll (5.5” high). Our annual outing this year is a lunch at The Lighthouse Inn, Walcott, followed by a visit to our local Dollshouse Museum at Bacton. We sell items on a table in support of our local Air Ambulance and we also have a Club Sales Table. Members also have a table where they are able to sell any of their own items. email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk NORFOLK WOODBURNERS SUPPLY & INSTALLATION OF WOODBURNERS Norfolk’s agent for Aga, Hunter & Parkray Stoves 01328 700161 www.norfolkwoodburners.co.uk SMILE TIME I was driving this morning when I saw a parked RAC van. NEWS FROM KELLING CE PRIMARY SCHOOL The children and staff had great fun on Friday 6th March, celebrating World Book Day. Children came to school dressed as their favourite literary characters, these included: Peter Pan, Paddington Bear, The BFG and an Oompa Loompa, among many others. Prizes were awarded for the most thoughtful costumes. Also that day teachers and children buried a time capsule in the school grounds (photograph bottom) to give students attending the school in 50 years’ time an insight into what life was like in 2015. Pupils filled the capsule with a selection of items from the school including photos, letters, drawings, a dinner menu and prospectus, as well as school newsletters, leaflets and other general information. The capsule will remain buried in the school grounds until 2065 when it will be dug up and opened by students, allowing them to see how school life has changed in half a century. Headteacher, Miss Dolan said: “The children have greatly enjoyed thinking of items to put in the capsule, getting them together and creating their own pieces of work too. It will be really interesting to know what future pupils of Kelling CE Primary School think of our lives in 2015”. And once the tyre smoke has cleared and the warning bells are silenced, we’ll open the door and you can pick your way through the wreckage to the terminal.” Part of a flight attendant’s arrival announcement: “We’d like to thank you folks for flying with us today. And, the next time you get the insane urge to go blasting through the skies in a pressurised metal tube, we hope you’ll think of us here at US Airways.” And from the pilot during his welcome message: “We are pleased to have some of the best flight attendants in the industry. Firstly I must thank you for the fantastic response to the questionnaire that was distributed at the end of last year. It was so good to hear from members of our community and be assured the steering group will work to progress your ideas. We have appointed a robust and experienced steering group and will keep you updated with their progress. This month’s update has been written by a new member, who is a Holt resident. Holt’s Future: Having Your Say The Neighbourhood Plan, Holt’s Future, gives everyone living here the opportunity to have a say in the way our town develops. There was a terrific response to the Survey sent out last October. Many thanks to everyone who took the time to feedback so many helpful ideas and suggestions. The full results will appear soon and you can find a summary of them now on our website, www.holttowncouncil.org. Here are some of the key findings. • The average age of our respondents was 62 of whom 82% owned their own homes. • Almost twice as many people aged over 75 replied compared to those aged 25-40. • Not surprisingly, what people valued most highly in Holt were the countryside; the town’s historic character and its variety of independent shops. • Almost everyone identified insufficient parking as the town’s number one problem. • Suggestions for what we’d like to see in Holt included fewer second homes, regular market, museum, a cinema, a swimming pool, and activities for young people and perhaps most importantly employment for the people of Holt. There are many things which, working together, we can influence and Holt Town Council wants you to be involved in shaping our Neighbourhood Plan, Holt’s Future. National guidelines for development are shaped in Westminster; the technical framework is overlooked by the District Council in Cromer. But the detail of how policies are implemented in Holt will be informed by Holt’s Future, and in order to draw up that Neighbourhood Plan, Holt Town Council is determined to involve everyone living in Holt. We are setting up a Neighbourhood Plan workshop, led by Rachel, an experienced Neighbourhood planner, to which you are invited. If you are interested please contact the Town Clerk on 01263 712149. Rachel has worked with communities around the country on how to make their neighbourhood plans inclusive and effective. We hope as many of you as possible will come along to this meeting. Maybe you’d like to help us develop the plan in particular ways? Perhaps you have expertise in some particular area, such as law, health, education, planning, traffic management, journalism, websites, wildlife, or conservation. Perhaps you enjoy walking, we always need good deliverers! Why not drop Elaine an email, holtnp@gmail.com, outlining your particular areas of expertise, interest or concern? What we hope to promote in Holt is a continuing conversation about how the town can build upon its strengths and look forward to a robust future. We are particularly keen to hear from young people, and from those with children, who will live with the kinds of changes that the Neighbourhood Plan will address. We recognise that working families have precious little time to come to daytime meetings so we need to hear your suggestions for how working families and young people can best be involved in the conversation. At nearly four thousand people, Holt is exactly the right size for a thriving democratic debate on its future. Facebook, Twitter and the Holt Chronicle are three channels through which we hope everyone can stay in touch with the process and contribute, the steering group regularly feeding back to everyone their latest thoughts and seeking your advice on how to proceed. If you can think of other ways by which we can connect with you, let us know. We want your opinion. Neighbourhood Planning steering Committee Member email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk 8 The Holt Chronicle Issue 322 27th March 2015 THUMBS UP FOR ‘BIRDSEYE’ WAGON RESTORATION Volunteers of the M&GN Joint Railway Society, the supporting charity of the North Norfolk Railway (NNR) have successfully completed the restoration of a unique ‘Birdseye’ wagon, believed to be the only one in the country. The recently overhauled wagon was launched over the North Norfolk Railway’s recent Spring Steam Gala and will now be a permanent addition to the Railway’s demonstration freight train. To celebrate the launch, the NNR volunteer Biz Bizzel dressed up as Captain Birdseye to launch the vehicle into traffic. The wagon is just the latest in a string of restorations funded by the ‘Joint Heritage Coach Fund’, which restores carriages and wagons with unique East Anglian history to working order. Nigel Scarlett, who spearheaded the project said, “It turned out to be a bigger project than anticipated. We ended up making the container entirely from scratch, using as many salvaged bits from the original as possible.” He added, “The highlight has been seeing it in traffic over the Steam Gala weekend. The reaction from visitors and passengers was great. Getting Biz dressed up as Captain Birdseye was the icing on the cake.” A concious decision was made to paint the container in Birdseye colours because of the rich history it represented. Whilst coal was king in the Midlands and the North East, in East Anglia, agricultural produce and latterly fish were the moneymakers. Millions of tonnes of fish was transported by rail overnight from the ports of Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft to markets in London and further afield. Birdseye still operate a factory at Ness Point in Lowestoft. Birdseye were approached to sponsor the wagon, but no response was received. The wagon is a ‘Conflat’ type (No.B502824) and the container a British Railways ‘AF’ (No.AF65970B) type. The ‘Conflat’ was restored in 2011 and the container was purchased from the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre in 2014. GRESHAM’S SCHOOL HOLDS THE SOLUTION Dear Caroline I’m not a resident of Grove Lane area but I’ve seen a circular posted by two local councillors. I don’t think the residents of that area should be inconvenienced by a suggested one-way traffic system in Grove Lane if the road safety and traffic problems are caused by parents of pupils at Gresham’s Junior School using the lane as a short cut. If this is true, the just and honourable solution is for the school to advise parents to use the parallel stretch of Cromer Road instead and for the parents to adhere to that. Pearson’s Road is as unsuitable an access to Gresham’s Junior School as Grove Lane and the worst traffic jams in Holt are caused by the westbound exodus from Gresham’s School queuing through the Market Place and High Street to get on to Norwich Road and the A148 west. I think the Town Council and the County highways authority should request the school to advise all parents to use Cromer Road and the A148 via the junction at High Kelling for all access to and from the main school and the junior school. To this end the County Council could also help by improving the visibility for drivers at the junctions of Cromer Road with Grove Lane (west end) and Kelling Road and providing a refuge for the right turn from Cromer Road on to the A148. In view of the traffic it generates, the school might also be asked to contribute to improving the junction of Pearson’s Road and Grove Lane. We might expect this gentlemen’s school to see the traffic problems it is causing to its host town and to volunteer remedial action on its own initiative but there is no harm in asking. Yours sincerely, Cedric Greenwood SPEED CAMERAS Dear Caroline, The proposal for a 20mph restriction outside Greshams in the Cromer Road is timely and should stretch from Woodlands to the 40mph sign near the Kelling junction. But the new proposed limit will be as ineffective as the present 30mph limit unless monitored by a Gatso or similar speed camera. Following traffic on my way along the Cromer Road into Holt from Kelling on numerous occasions I have witnessed the present 30mph limit ignored, by buses, commercial vehicles as well as private motorists, passing the illuminated 30mph warning sign at excessive speed. I hope the powers that be will bear this in mind. Yours sincerely, Tony Gee COACH SERVICES Dear Caroline, Sanders Coaches are changing their bus timetables on 29th March but as Sanders do not issue press releases I thought readers might like to know what’s happening in the Cromer - Holt area. The 5, North Walsham - Holt, on Mondays to Saturdays, will be half hourly most of the day instead of hourly. The 9 will be withdrawn between Cromer and Holt, so just run Holt - Fakenham. It will actually be the same bus as the 5, so no need to change at Holt though pass holders must re-present their pass there to the driver. The Norwich - Sheringham 44 will be extended to Holt via Holway Road daily, in place of the 9. But what the new timetable book doesn’t mention, nor offer any explanation for, is: The 5 no longer runs Sundays west of Cromer, so Upper Sheringham loses its Sunday buses, currently provided by the 9. The last bus from Sheringham to Holt, at 11.48pm, will now be a 44 and not a 5, so will no longer serve Upper Sheringham. Yours sincerely, David Hurdle DAVID RYAN (DAVE) I would also like to thank Lloyd Durham for their excellent funeral arrangements and Will Chandler for a beautiful service, it was exactly as Dave wanted. He would have been very proud. Yours sincerely, Lisa Ryan MARIE CURIE Dear Caroline, We would like to thank everyone who helped us to collect £1340.86 on Saturday, 14th March for Marie Curie Cancer Care. What a huge amount of money! We were given fresh daffodils by a very kind local farmer, it makes a big difference to have fresh flowers. We missed Karen’s girls this year, first time in about 10 years without them cheering everyone up. They are all working now. It was good to have Sheila Oxtoby, Chief Executive of NNDC and Tom Fitzpatrick Leader of NNDC at the meeting. The Councillors and members of the public were invited to ask questions. A theme of the questions was why Holt doesn’t get any help in maintaining their outdoor play facilities. The playing field committee do grand work in keeping this facility running and as it is the only facility in Holt, and caters for a wide range of sports, it was felt NNDC should contribute to help more. Sheila and Tom agreed to look at the funding again and were invited to visit and see the facilities for themselves. The Police were present and gave a crime report for the last month. The public were warned there had been some burglaries in nearby parishes in recent weeks and now a resident of Holt has become a victim. It was requested that residents report any suspicious activity. The Town Council agreed to match fund and be involved in the planting of new planters in the Town centre. Holt deserves to have a superb floral display during the summer and it is felt this would be a good centre piece to our unique town. The Town Council will work with the Chamber to fulfil the vision and it would be good for Holt to be known for its displays, as indeed it was in the past. A report was received on the Neighbourhood Plan. The steering committee membership has increased with some interested members of the public joining. Tasks have been allocated and we are looking forward to a Neighbourhood Planning workshop at the end of the month. It was reported a letter from NCC had been received, regarding proposals for a footway improvement in Grove Lane. The District Councillors felt that the residents’ concerns were not being listened to and have arranged for the immediate residents to be consulted on 4 proposals which they will then take back to Norfolk County Council. It was agreed to host the circus on 27th -30th August. This will be on Spouts common and hopefully be something for the residents of Holt to look forward to. The Town Council next meet on 30th March for the Annual Towns meeting and then on 13th April for the monthly Town Council meeting. Town Council elections will be on 7th May, the same day as the District and Parliamentary elections. There is the deep sorrow and pain of Good Friday as we kneel before the cross of the crucified Christ and then the wonderful joy of Easter Day when we gather at 5.30am to greet Christ, with the shout “Christ is risen!” In many ways Holy Week touches something deep within us, it as though our own experience of life is encapsulated within just one week. We all experience at some time in our lives the sorrow of Good Friday. I remember only too well the pain and sorrow of the death of my brother in 2002, aged just 44. He actually died on the Tuesday of Holy Week, which made Good Friday even more poignant. Yet as someone said to me, “if someone you love dies in Holy Week, you always have Easter Day.” That year the hope and joy of Easter Day as we proclaimed the resurrection of Christ from the dead gave me great strength and renewed my faith that though our departed loved ones have died to this life they live a new life hidden in Christ. Sadness and pain, hope and joy, we all experience them. Yet sadly, too many people in our communities and throughout the world have to live daily with the pain and sorrow of Good Friday. I visit a number of people in the parish who live with what seems intolerable situations and you only have to listen to the news to learn of people around the world living with unimaginable problems. Sickness, isolation, loneliness, discrimination, injustice, inequality, abuse, fear, poverty, disease, hunger, violence, bloodshed, and murder make Good Friday a reality for millions of people today. And while we look for answers to why people suffer and do not find many, it is Good Friday and the Cross of Christ which reassures me that God is with us, even in the darkest and most painful of places. God is not divorced from the suffering we experience, he is to be found in the midst of it, suffering with us and for us. But also thank God for the victory of Easter Day. The joy and hope of the resurrection is also a reality in our world. When love triumphs over evil, hope over despair, forgiveness over hatred, justice over wrong then there is resurrection. I see and experience it in the community in which I am blessed to live and work. Countless people work for the benefit of others to build communities in which people are valued and loved, and throughout the world aid agencies, charities and individuals work in order that people may know the triumph and joy of Easter Day. We experience it too in the loving relationship we enjoy with those with whom we share our lives, families and friends. Holy Week and Easter resonates deeply with the experience of life, and so whoever you are and wherever you are, may you know, through the death and resurrection of Christ, the assurance that God is with you and the joy and hope of Easter Day. Every blessing to you and yours for a joyous Easter. Fr. Howard For times of services for Holy Week & Easter see advertisement in this issue, on the church notice board, or on our website: . www.holtchurch.org www.holtchronicle.co.uk 13 GENERAL ELECTION MAY 2015. The reason for this stems from the Government’s recent announcement that it intended to introduce new rules to stop local authorities making charges at recycling centres. Instead there is to be a comprehensive review of all the County Council’s recycling facilities, looking at ideas for how savings could be made up in other ways. Reference Areas: Many of us were concerned at the prospect of ‘zoning’ off part of Blakeney marsh as a reference area. Whilst for now Blakeney is not under consideration it is best to keep an eye open for any developments. In future we need to look out for the term ‘Highly Protected Marine Areas’, this is the new name for reference areas! What is under consideration is whether there is a need for Highly Protected Marine Areas within a network of marine protected areas (MPAs) in our waters. The work on this project commenced last September and will run until the end of March 2015. I will endeavour to obtain information as soon as possible after the final report is ready. Emergency Mobile Telephone Signals: There has been concern regarding the lack of even an emergency mobile signal in some parts of Norfolk. I am sure you will be pleased to learn that the Department for Culture Media and Sport (with responsibility for digital matters) has now released information on the Mobile Infrastructure Project for Norfolk. Whilst we have been in discussion with the Department for some time regarding this problem it is only now we can share the latest update regarding the DCMS’s Mobile Infrastructure Project, which is making up to £150 million available across the UK to improve mobile coverage in areas where there is currently no emergency signal from any of the mobile network operators. Blakeney and Salthouse have been identified in the project as potential locations that may have mobile phone infrastructure installed. Arqiva, who is running the project on behalf of DCMS, will continue to work with local communities to determine what infrastructure solution is most appropriate for each location. Concessionary Travel Cards: Please check your concessionary travel card because anyone with a card has until 7th April to make sure their smartcard is valid before a new ‘hot listing’ system blocks free travel. These cards are already electronically checked as you board a bus but now will also show up any cards that have been ‘hot listed’ after being reported lost, stolen or withdrawn for some other reason. Up until 6th April, anyone whose card shows up as being ‘hot listed’ will be allowed to travel and advised to apply for a new concessionary smartcard. From 7th April any ‘hot listed’ cards will be retained by the driver. Enquiries about updating concessionary travel passes can be made by calling the County Council on 0344 800 8020 or email concessionarytravel@ norfolk.gov.uk. Apprenticeships: I have repeatedly pressed for more support for apprenticeships across the county and I am pleased that over 50 organisations in Norfolk have joined together to drive growth or create more apprenticeship opportunities in the county. The Apprenticeships Norfolk Network, supported by NCC and New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership aims to increase the number, level, quality and range of apprenticeships available. For more information visit the Network’s website www.apprenticeshipsnorfolk.org. Protecting Children in Norfolk: A multi-agency review has been commissioned to look into historic complaints from foster carers who felt they had been unfairly treated. The review, an extension of an earlier examination, offers a further opportunity for any of those remaining carers to have their case reviewed and so resolve any outstanding issues. The ‘Drop In’ style Café aims to provide much needed information and support to those living locally with dementia and their carers, as well as offering many activities including games, quizzes, art and craft, relaxation for carers, reminiscence and music. Specialists from a number of organisations visit to offer information, advice and support. Mr. Lamb’s visit was very much appreciated and enjoyed both by clients and carers, co-ordinators and volunteers alike. At the end of the morning, during which Norman met, chatted and listened to those present, he praised the growth and success of the ‘Poppy Centre’ which was launched in Holt last April. He also wished the group success with the Home Visiting Service, a new project that started on February 15th. L to R: Wendy Richley (Chair and Co-ordinator HDDSP), The official launch will be on 17th April at 10.30am -11.30am Fr Howard Stoker, Norman Lamb MP, and this will be followed by our AGM at midday. This service Co-ordinators Ann Hill and Ann Poberefsky. offers respite for carers looking after a person living with dementia. Our specifically trained volunteers offer company, support and reassurance to the client in their own home, enabling carers to take ‘time out’. Visits are pre-arranged to suit both the needs of the client and their carer; and the service is free of charge. Wendy Richley, Chair, Holt & District DSG, thanked Norman for his genuine interest and support of the service. If you would like more information about either of these services please pop into the Café any Tuesday from 10.30am - 12.30pm. Before Norman’s arrival on that Tuesday morning, ‘The Poppy Centre’ had a most unexpected visitor. Sadly it wasn’t captured on camera as it peered through at those already enjoying coffee and joining in the activities in the Meeting Room at St. Andrew’s Church. However it led to much excitement; and after much searching in the churchyard, this photograph was taken! We have over 15,000 visits a year and already bookings are coming in for next year.” Richard Crook, Vice Chair said, “The flooring is nearly forty years old and is in bad need of repair. We were disappointed to have the bid to the North Norfolk District Council rejected but are very happy the National Lottery has come to the rescue. We have recently added Wi-Fi to the centre and are brightening it up and improving the facilities. We all love the new sign and are planning a large community notice board in the next few weeks. As well as the main hall we now have two good quality meeting rooms to rent.” The Trustees have said they are aware how difficult times are financially but are doing their best to ensure Fakenham gets a fair deal. The next big event organised by the Centre is the Trustees Adrian Vertigan, Lisa Mallet (Centre Coordinator), Emma Smith, performance of Parachute on the 4th April. North Norfolk Photographic Society said a fond ‘goodbye’ to Judy Knights (left) at their meeting on 4th March. Judy has been a key member of the club for some years past, serving on the Committee (in recent times as Club Secretary) and having achieved recognition along the way from the Royal Photographic Society and from the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain; it has been no surprise that she has won many of the club’s competitions. Just before moving from Sheringham to be closer to her family, Judy made her point by winning her last competition. Judged by one of the club’s familiar and charismatic judges, Jim Hartje from Peterborough, in the Open Competition Judy’s print ‘Going Down’ (right) was a worthy winner. A spiral staircase looking a bit like a snail shell if it were not for the chap going down the stairs, it beat Hugh Barton’s ‘Red Squirrel on Stump’ into second place, followed by Diana Knight with ‘On the Lookout’. The set subject for the evening was a panel of 3 prints - which calls for three pictures with some relationship. The winner in this was Lizzie Wallis’s ‘In for the Kill’ - a series of 3 action shots of a predating bird catching a fish. Second was Liz Akers’ 3 ‘Spittal Rock Patterns’ and third Paul Richards’ ‘Fishing’. Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month from 7.30pm in the Holt Community Centre. Until the start of April all donations to this appeal will be matched by the UK Government. The Fairtrade suppliers, Traidcraft, have a charity which helps marginalised smallholder farmers to improve their standard of living. For instance, Hadija, in Tanzania was widowed with three children. She heard of a Traidcraft scheme nearby showing people how to keep bees and she now has five hives, earning her enough to feed her children and to send them to school. This story is echoed thousands of times in many parts of the world. Until the beginning of April Traidcraft has called the project ‘Fair Necessities’, because the U.K. Government is going to double the amount of donations sent to Traidcraft, so twice as many people will be given help. The North Norfolk Chamber Opera (NNCO) is an amateur performing group set up some 25 years ago by our President, Janet Bryant-Heron to perform operatic works seldom, if ever, seen in North Norfolk. Our venues have included the Sheringham Little Theatre, Kelling Barn, The Maddermarket Theatre and for many years now the Auden Theatre which is part of Gresham’s School in Holt. NNCO have put on an opera annually in the spring, performing such works as ‘The Marriage of Figaro’, ‘The Magic Flute’ and ‘Don Giovann’i by Mozart, ‘Die Fledermaus’ by Strauss, ‘Sister Angelica’ by Puccini, ‘Albert Herring’ by Britten, ‘The Song in the Blickling Garden’ by Davidson and many operettas and one act operas. Our concerts in the autumn have been both serious and light-hearted including ‘The Hills are Alive with the Sound of Mozart’ and ‘Opera and Chips’ performed in a barn at a pub! Our next production will be an English translation of ‘The Elixir of Love’ (L’Elisir d’Amore) by Gaetano Donizetti, nightly on 16th - 18th April 2015 at the Auden Theatre - a fun ‘Rom-Com’ in which a lovelorn young man takes an Elixir (actually only wine but he doesn’t know that!) in order to try and win his love. We are a very small amateur group (seen above at rehearsal) and new members are always welcome; non-performing as well as performing. If you would like to know more, please contact Maggi Warren, Musical Director/Acting Chair on 01263 761482 or see our website www.northnorfolkchamberopera.co.uk. Spring Cleaning Time! At last it seems as though spring is here, with bulbs emerging through the ground, sunny days and warmer temperatures. This is traditionally the time of year when we blitz the home, dusting out and cleaning all the corners and crevices and ushering in a new season. It should be no different with our bodies, which also need a bit of a dusting off and cleaning out after all the winter comfort food we have been indulging in! This soup does just that; packed with vital nutrients and antioxidants, it has a wonderful boosting effect on the system, keeping everything moving well through the body (ahem!) and helping us to remove the stodgy build up that can occur with too much rich food and meaty dishes. A few days on this soup and I can assure you that you will feel well and truly purged and detoxified, and you will be giving your body a vital boost of nutrients. It is surprisingly tasty too, and with all that fibre, very filling and satisfying. If you’re really feeling sluggish, try the Green Smoothie recipe below too; I find a large glass of this every day keeps my system moving, gives me energy and clear skin, helps with the 5 a day and makes a great fibre filling breakfast. For the uninitiated, it actually tastes really lovely; you taste the fruit more than the salad, trust me! Spring Clean Green Soup 1 large white onion, chopped 2 large leeks, chopped 6 sticks celery, chopped 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped Olive Oil 2 fist size potatoes, peeled and chopped into small chunks ¼ celeriac, skinned and chopped into small chunks ½ head broccoli, broken into small florets ½ head savoy cabbage, shredded 1 bag Kale Heaped tsp Herbs de Provence Stock cube Put onion, leeks, celery and garlic into deep saucepan with a couple of tablespoons of oil and gently sweat with lid on for 5 mins over a medium heat. Add potato and celeriac and sweat for further 5 mins, stirring occasionally, then add broccoli, kale and cabbage, stir well, add seasoning and herbs and leave for a further 3 mins. Boil kettle, and add just enough water to almost come up to the level of the vegetables; do not add too much or your soup will be too thin. Add stock cube, stir and bring to boil, and then turn down to a simmer, cooking until potatoes are just soft (about 10 mins). Check seasoning, and then use a hand blender to whiz into a smooth soup. Refrigerate and eat within 3 days. Telephone 01263 713804 AN MP’s SAD DEMISE While walking down the street one day a Member of Parliament is tragically hit by a truck and dies. His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance. “Welcome to heaven,” says St. Peter. “Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we’re not sure what to do with you.” “No problem, just let me in,” says the MP. “Well, I’d like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we’ll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity.” “Really, I’ve made up my mind. I want to be in heaven,” says the MP. “I’m sorry, but we have our rules.” And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he went down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he found himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him. Everyone is very happy and dressed in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people. They played a friendly game of golf and then dined on lobster, caviar and champagne. Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly and nice guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that before he realises it, it’s time to go. Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and wave whilst the elevator rises.... The elevator rises and the door opens in heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him. “Now it’s time to visit heaven.” So, 24 hours pass with the MP joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realises it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns. “Well, then, you’ve spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity.” The MP reflects for a minute, then he answers: “Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell.” So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down down to hell. When the doors open he’s in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above. The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder. “I don’t understand,” stammers the MP. “Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, danced and had a great time. Now there’s just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?” The devil looks at him, smiles and says, “ Yesterday we were campaigning..... today you voted.” www.holtchronicle.co.uk Free Cooking Demonstrations Fed up cooking the same dishes? The launch, 7.00pm 9.00pm at The Maltings, Staithe St, Wells-next-the-Sea NR23 1AH, follows months of planning involving Age UK Norfolk working in partnership with Wells Hospital and a steering committee of local people to support the community to become a Dementia Friendly Community. This is the sixth Dementia Friendly Community initiative in Norfolk and is part of a drive to make Norfolk a Dementia Friendly county. Age UK Norfolk has so far worked with communities to develop initiatives in Aylsham, Wymondham, Swaffham, Diss and Wayland. The aim of Dementia Friendly Community projects is to unite the whole community in raising awareness and understanding of dementia so that people living with dementia and their carers are able to access the social life, businesses and amenities in their community and to live independently in their own homes longer. Councillor Dr Marie Strong will be the compere for the evening and Willie Cruickshank from Norfolk and Suffolk Dementia Alliance and Zena Aldridge, Lead Admiral Nurse for Norfolk, will speak about dementia and what Dementia Friendly Communities mean for everyone. Local shops, other businesses and organisations in the area are being invited to attend the launch to find out about the project and how they can make their services more accessible to customers with dementia. Age UK Norfolk’s Dementia Lead, Joanne Mountjoy-Dixon commented, “Age UK Norfolk is delighted that Wells is getting involved and we are pleased to be working with Wells Steering Committee to take forward another Dementia Friendly Community in Norfolk. We hope that representatives from local businesses, groups and organisations will attend and take advantage of free dementiaawareness workshops being offered by Age UK Norfolk. ” Tina Neil from Age UK Norfolk will talk about the training package and Dementia Friendly Community Toolkit, which is available to businesses and organisations to provide practical support to help them ensure customers living with dementia can use their services. The event is by invitation only. If you would like to attend or would like further information, please contact Jo Mountjoy-Dixon on 01603 785232 or email joanne.mountjoy-dixon@ageuknorfolk.org.uk. Jo is also very keen to hear from other towns and villages who are interested in becoming Dementia Friendly Communities. Open from 1st to 27th April, 10.00am to 4.30pm daily, the exhibition showcases the artist’s work in support of conservation and features John’s vast Norfolk coastal skies and fleeting weather patterns. Called ‘New Ground. Cley and Beyond’, some paintings record Pope’s Marsh, the new reserve purchased by The Trust with the support of Heritage Lottery grants and public subscription. John enjoys painting daily life on the coast too, hence detailed beach studies will be found juxtaposed with minimal marsh watercolours. “I am fortunate to have the support of wonderful patrons from far and wide”, quoted John, who has recently completed a heritage book of original watercolours for Liam Botham, comprising of twenty moorland studies. He has also just completed a painting of the Tidal Transit fleet in Wells harbour. The exhibition culminates with a ‘live feed’ watercolour techniques demonstration in the new facilities on Saturday 25th April at 4.30pm in which John will show images of his work and paint whilst being filmed. The cost is £3.50 for Trust funds and it is advisable to book in advance by contacting Cley Marshes Centre on 01263 740008 as places are limited. John’s 2015 shows, including a fine selection of his signed prints and books, continue in St Nicholas Church Room on Blakeney Quay from 2nd to 8th May, Salthouse in August and Blakeney in September and October, all of which can be viewed in ‘The News Section’ of www.marshlandarts. co.uk. John wishes you warm welcome to all his exhibitions. North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) Big Society Fund (BSF) Grant Panel has awarded funding totalling £49,000 to eight community projects across North Norfolk. The Big Society Fund was set up by NNDC to help build strong communities in the district. The Fund aims to help communities to develop new and innovative projects which will improve their social and economic wellbeing. Conditional BSF grant awards in this round include: Southrepps Parish Council (£5,372), Ingworth Parish Council (£7,500) and Sculthorpe Parish Council (£7,500) for projects to improve play provision. Grants to improve facilities and help support the sustainability of village halls were given to Kettlestone (£6,000) and Ludham (£4,500). A grant of £7,500 was awarded to Wells Town Tennis Club towards a replacement club house with toilets. The Panel heard that this would improve the facilities for all users of the tennis club as well as encourage the local community, in particular, children and people with learning disabilities interested in playing tennis. The club house will also be available as a meeting venue for the local community. St Andrews Church Hall in Holt will receive a grant of £2,628 towards new chairs at the hall which will benefit people attending community events and activities. A grant of £8,000 was awarded to Stalham Town Council towards an intergenerational community project which will include the creation of a heritage trail with interpretation boards sited at key locations in Stalham. NNDC Leader, Tom FitzPatrick, said, “I am really encouraged that so many communities across North Norfolk have come forward with innovative projects seeking support from the Council’s Big Society Fund for grants to match their own considerable efforts. As a council we are delighted to reward the hard work of many local people by providing support to projects that clearly benefit our local communities. We look forward to excellent projects continuing to come forward. We are committed to making sure that the Council’s funds are used in the most effective way and I encourage local community organisations to make an application to the grant Fund which I’m pleased to announce will continue for another year.” NNDC will provide help and advice to applicants at all stages in the application process to help them develop excellent projects that will achieve their desired outcome and become financially sustainable in the long-term. If you have an idea or a project that you wish to develop and apply for funding, you are encouraged to get in touch with the Council (via Sonia Shuter tel. 01263 516173, email supporting.communities@north-norfolk. gov.uk) or visit www.northnorfolk.org/bigsocietyfund THE HOLT CHRONICLE is delivered door to door in Holt and Weybourne and copies are left at the many distribution points listed below. In April of this year, North Norfolk resident Keith Packer will be cycling from his home in Melton Constable to the Isle of Skye, in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care. His 650-mile trip is in memory of his friend Jackie from Kyle of Lochalsh, West Highlands. She lived with an aggressive brain tumour for fourteen months, winning several battles along the way, but finally died peacefully at home in June of last year, aged 44. She leaves a partner and teenage son. She and her family received incredible support from the local Marie Curie nurses, and Keith is making this ride in thanks to them. Leaving on 16th April, Keith will ride for eight days to Jackie’s resting place and to where he lived for several years before moving to Norfolk. His route will take him from Melton Constable to Kyleakin on the Isle of Skye, via Lincoln, York, Durham, Borders, Edinburgh, Crianlarich, Fort William and Kyle of Lochalsh. He’s been riding on the North Norfolk roads since early January in preparation, battling the cold and wind, though he’s sure he’ll be encountering a few more hills en route to the Highlands. Keith is raising funds for Marie Curie through his Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/big-skye, to help them continue their invaluable work. There is also a collection box at Rutlands butcher in Melton Constable. Everyone made some very pretty cards and were able to take materials home to make more. Our next meeting is on Monday 13th April when members can bring their own work. Meetings start at 7.30pm on the second Monday of each month and are held at Briston Congregational Centre (the Circle is nondenominational). New members are always very welcome. For more details please contact, Anne Fippard on 01263 861004 or Ginny Unsworth on 01263 861963. There was a good attendance of members and visitors at our meeting on 9th March which commenced with the Annual General Meeting. We were very pleased to welcome three additional members on to the committee this year. ‘Making a wildlife pond’ was the subject of Hilary Reid’s talk and the plans and preparations she made before commencing to dig out the pond herself. Her talk was put across with such humour that made what could have been a dull subject, very amusing. After reading library books on the subject and finding they were not practical, she decided to do it her way. The depth of the pond was two feet six inches with a shallow area one end for birds to bathe. Newspaper was placed at the bottom and butyl sheeting was used as lining, being held in place by long nails. Hexagonal slabs surrounded the pond, leaving space for the overflow bog area. She installed a pump and fountain and told us the problems encountered in doing so. Once the pond was completed it required plants such as oxygenators, floaters, marginals and ones that thrive in damp areas. At the end of her talk Hilary passed around some photos of the finished pond, surrounded by shrubs and plants, and she must surely be very proud of her efforts, as she has created a very lovely, relaxing place to sit. Hilary also hand-paints stones to resemble cats, dogs, frogs, hedgehogs, owls, ladybirds and more, which she brought along to sell for a charity. Our next meeting is on Monday 13th April, when Howard Norton will give a talk on ‘Delphiniums’. Coffee, tea and biscuits will be available from 7.15pm and the meeting starts at 7.30pm. NORTH NORFOLK GEARS UP FOR TOUR OF BRITAIN 2015 STAGE START Fakenham Racecourse is set to host the start of the seventh stage of Britain’s biggest cycling event, the Tour of Britain, on Saturday 12th September. The Tour of Britain is returning to Norfolk for the first time since 2012 and the historic market town will be the start of the penultimate and longest stage of the Tour. World class cyclists will head through North Norfolk’s unique and beautiful countryside for the closing weekend of the Tour. The 2015 Tour will take place from Sunday 6th September to Saturday 12th September with stage seven of the race heading from Fakenham towards Thetford via Norwich and then on to finishing the stage in Ipswich. Active Norfolk, Norfolk County Council and Adnams have worked together to bring the Tour of Britain back to the region. The return of the race to the county has also been made possible by the support of Breckland Council, Broadland District Council, North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), Norwich City Council and South Norfolk Council. Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council said: “Our unique and beautiful countryside will be a fantastic backdrop to this world-renowned spectacle. I am delighted that we have been able to secure Fakenham Racecourse as the starting point for the penultimate stage and I can’t wait to join the thousands of locals and visitors to the area that will line the route to witness such a great event. It will be a fantastic boost to our local economy and an opportunity for us to showcase North Norfolk as a great destination for cyclists. I am hopeful that the event will encourage more people to get involved in cycling at all levels from those who enjoy a gentle ride through the countryside with family and friends to aspiring Olympic athletes”. It is likely that some 20 cycling teams will enter this year’s event, with six riders per team, and at least half of those riders having recently completed the world’s biggest cycling race, the Tour de France. North Norfolk District Council will be organising many activities to entertain spectators wishing to catch a glimpse of their cycling idols. It will be a fantastic opportunity for locals and visitors to the district to get close to some of the household names that played such a significant part in Team GB’s hugely successful London The scene in Holt August 2010 2012 Olympics. Weybourne Road, Bodham, HOLT. NR25 6QJ THAT’S LIFE! More true life experiences Investigating a case as a CID officer, I visited an old lady. As I showed her my warrant card, she grabbed it and scrutinised my photograph. After a minute or so, she handed the card back. “No,” she said. “I’ve never seen him before.” A customer in our pharmacy shouted at one of the assistants before storming out. Another customer asked if everything was OK. “No problem,” said the assistant. “You have to understand, most of our customers are on drugs.” A real-life native American Indian was a special guest at my sister’s primary school. He talked to the children about his tribe and its traditions, then shared with them this fun fact: “There are no swear words in the Cherokee language.” One boy raised his hand , “But what if you’re hammering a nail and accidentally bash your thumb?” “That,” the Indian answered, “is when we use your language.” While on holiday in South Africa, my parents befriended a local fisherman. One of his big concerns in life was that wild baboons kept ripping the mirrors and wipers off his car while he was at work. Then, to his delight, he thought of a solution. Baboons were scared of snakes, he reasoned, so why not put rubber replicas on his car to warn them off? Next morning, after a visit to a toy shop, he parked his car and arranged 12 large fake snakes on the bonnet and roof. There was a flaw in his cunning plan, however. When he returned to his vehicle several hours later, he found it badly dented and battered and a crowd of angry baboons throwing rocks at the snakes. DISTURBING NUMBERS CAUGHT NOT WEARING SEATBELT More than 400 people were dealt with for not wearing their seatbelt during a week-long enforcement campaign in Norfolk and Suffolk. Officers from the joint roads policing unit carried out checks on motorists and their passengers as part of the Europe-wide TISPOL seatbelt enforcement initiative running from Monday 9th March to Sunday 15th March. In total 426 people were found not wearing a seatbelt – 233 in Norfolk and 193 in Suffolk, a large increase from the 97 drivers caught in the last campaign held in September 2014. Chief Inspector Chris Spinks, head of the Norfolk and Suffolk Roads Policing Unit, described the increase as “disturbing”. “The safety value in wearing a seatbelt is obvious and quite frankly it is disturbing to see so many drivers and passengers taking such risks with their lives in this way.” Not wearing a seatbelt is one of the ‘fatal four’ behaviours along with speeding, drink driving and using a mobile phone that makes you more likely to be seriously injured or killed in a collision. Ch Insp Chris Spinks added: “Putting on your seatbelt should be part of your routine before commencing any journey no matter how short and its imperative driver’s make sure passengers belt up as well. “Keeping our roads safe is day-to-day business for us and officers will continue to target those who break the law.” Editor’s Notes: It is illegal not to wear a seatbelt when travelling in a car or goods vehicle and it is the responsibility of the driver to ensure all passengers under the age of 14 are wearing a seatbelt or child restraint. Seatbelts should be worn in any vehicle they are provided in, including buses and goods vehicles. Anyone caught not wearing a seatbelt may be issued with a TOR (Traffic Offence Report) and face a fine, points on their licence or even court action.
