Second Sunday of Easter, Sunday of Divine Mercy
Dear Parishioners:
Some years ago St. John Paul II, when he canonized St. Faustina,
declared the Sunday after Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday. St.
Faustina had envisioned an image of Christ depicting his mercy
which we have in the chapel in the church. For many years I shied away from any
comment on the observance because for me Easter was about the joy of the Risen
Lord and the renewed hope that we have as a result of Christ’s Resurrection. Pope
Francis, since his election as leader of the Church, has taught about the mercy and
love of Christ for his people. The mistake that I made about the understanding of
the feast was to think that Christ had condemned us for the mistakes that we made
instead of seeing Christ embracing us as we returned to him seeking forgiveness
and wishing to begin anew. Many people of my generation envisioned Christ as a
law and order person. An understanding of divine mercy complements our understanding of the resurrection. Once we are forgiven, we can celebrate life.
I have finally turned my attention to the formation of a new Marriage and Family
Life group. I am writing to people to ask them to attend a meeting to explain what
I am trying to accomplish. If people accept the concept, then we can set up a long
-term group. The broad issue of marriage and family life encompasses many
dimensions. If a marriage is falling apart or if a family is in crisis or if a person
suffers from chemical dependency or depression, they might not attend worship
or be active in the church.
The other group that I would like to form is a new Social Justice group. Many
issues concern us as Catholics such as immigration, challenges to life, care of the
environment, just wages or feeding the hungry. It is not enough to show a film or
to pass out a bishop’s statement. Social justice is rooted in an understanding of
the scriptures and the teachings of the Church. Each of us needs to form his or her
conscience in light of moral teaching. At some point in the future, I would like to
have a listening session to see what interest people have. If you have some interest, please email your ideas to me at khaydock@holyrosaryedmonds.org.
Finally, I am happy to announce that I have hired Roberta Tassani as Pastoral
Assistant for Outreach and Family Life to replace Eileen Niven, who is retiring.
Roberta will work with Eileen for a month before Eileen retires on June 15th.
Roberta is a member of our parish along with her husband, Andy.

Parish Finance Council: I am looking for members, both men and women, for the Parish Finance
Council. The parish needs to raise about $4 million a year to make the budget, the debt service, and the
mandated appeals such as the Annual Catholic Appeal. The Council advises on the budget, prepares an
annual report, and reviews capital purchases. A background in accounting, financial planning or
human resources is helpful to serve on the Council. If you are interested, please contact Fr. Haydock.

Imagine being in that room with the disciples. The doors are locked. It must
have been getting musty in there. The disciples are confused, and they are
scared. Jesus appears in their midst despite the locked doors. I cannot imagine this did much to alleviate either their confusion or their fear. But Jesus
says, “Peace be with you.” In today’s gospel, Jesus says this not once but
three times: once to alleviate their fear, once as he breathes on them the Holy Spirit and once as he alleviates Thomas’ doubt. Being human, we have
many moments of doubt and fear. As Christians, we have the deep peace of
Christ to alleviate those moments.
The idea of Lenten discipline is to grow your discipleship. Continue your
spiritual growth during the Easter season with Deacon Ray! Ray has begun
teaching contemplative prayer on every-other Tuesday at 9AM and 6:30PM.
Next sessions are April 21st and May 5th. People new to the experience are
finding it overwhelmingly beautiful.
On every other Thursdays, join Deacon Ray at 9AM and/or 6:30PM. for a
study of the Psalms. Next meetings are April 23rd and May 7th.
Our next Ministry Fair will be next Sunday, April 19th, in the Pastoral Center lobby. Learn about our dedicated ministries and then enjoy breakfast
with the Knights! Representatives from Religious Ed, the Youth and Young
Adult Program, Marriage Prep, Perpetual Adoration, Health Ministry, Serra
Club and Stewardship will be there to answer your questions.
Save the Date! The 4th Annual Multicultural Mass and Lunch will be May
31st! This year we will be celebrating the cultures of Asia. If your cultural
heritage comes from Korea, China, Vietnam, the Philippines, India or other
Asian cultures, and you would like to help organize the event, please email

ADULT FAITH FORMATION: The Pray Always Group meets again Tuesday, April 21st at 9AM and again at
6:30PM. We’ll pray, have a chance to tell our stories, and learn a little. Since healing was such a big part of Jesus’
ministry, that session will focus on healing prayer and prayer for healing.
The Bible Study for Psalms, The School of Prayer will continue with session #2 on April 23rd. As in the past
there will be two sessions on Thursdays at 9AM and 6:30PM. The Psalms has been the school of prayer for countless saints, religious communities, and individual Christians. Let it help shape your prayer life as well.
We still need couples to volunteer as marriage mentor couples. If you’re in a happy marriage and were to volunteer, your help would be appreciated. The mentoring workbooks and video are excellent and easy to use. Plus, I’ll
see that you have a good orientation to the process so you can feel confident when you work with a couple. If you
feel called in your heart to this ministry to model Christian marriage to an engaged couple, contact me at

Daily Prayer This Week
This is a wonderful week to pray in joy at God's
merciful love for us, and for the unending forgiveness we are offered. We know we have done
nothing to deserve that forgiveness and that we cannot earn it, and yet it is ours, if only we can accept
it.
Over and over this week, we are invited to place our
trust in God. The ever-human disciples didn't always
put aside their fears, and neither do we. We can imagine the terrified followers of Jesus hiding behind
locked doors until he appears in their midst, inviting
them not to be afraid.
This might be a good week to spend time with Jesus
looking at the fears in our own lives which keep us
locked up away from others. We can ask Jesus for
the courage to trust in him. What would it cost us to
let go of the fears that smother our lives? What
would it mean for our lives and for the relationships
in our lives if we were willing to let go of “the way
we have always done things” and to beg Jesus for
help? Our lives can change. We have a standing offer from our Lord to fall into his forgiving embrace.
Dear Lord, it feels impossible to believe that my life
can change, that I can move out of this rut I am in. I
know I don't always live my life feeling your love
and being my best self. Help me to trust in you, to
drop my defenses and to feel how deeply I am loved
and forgiven by you. Give me the courage to feel it
in my heart when you say, “Don't be afraid” and
“Peace be with you.” I so long for that peace in my
life but it feels so far away sometimes. Help me to
believe in you, to drive away the doubts and unbelief
that harden my heart.
I know my life can change, if only I can say with all
my heart, “I trust in you, Lord. I believe in your
mercy and I know that with your help, my life can be
healed.”

Youth and Young Adult Ministry
Our Youth and Young Adult Website is updated! Please refer to it for information regarding many ministry opportunities for 7th and 8th graders, high school students and young adults.
Life Nights for High School Teens...on Sundays, 7-8:30PM. We meet each Sunday night except for certain holiday
weekends. A full calendar is published online on our parish website.
Open Gym time has changed to 8:30-9:30PM to make time for our Life Nights (7-8:30PM, with exceptions as noted
on the website).
High school teens are also encouraged to be members of our “Peer Team” a peer leader for our high school group
or a “Core Team” member for our 7th and 8th grade group. This kind of leadership involvement is a real plus for college
and job applications.
World Youth Day is on!!! We’re going to Krakow, Poland in July 2016 for an amazing experience!!! A link to the

LAST RITES vs. VIATICUM: We still receive requests for last rites. People often wait until a person is about to
die before they call the parish. With a priest’s schedule today, it is hard to guarantee a priest will be available. The
church has changed its understanding of the sacrament. Instead of waiting until a person is about die, the church
encourages people to celebrate the sacrament while they are still alert and can participate in it. The church has
replaced “last rites” with viaticum, or last communion. Any Eucharistic minister can offer viaticum to a dying
person. However, sometimes at the end, people cannot swallow, so it would not be good to offer communion to
them. Please call the parish if someone is sick so we can schedule an anointing.
BLEACHERS: We need to replace the bleachers in the gym, which are 35 years old. They no longer meet code.
If a person had an accident on them, we would have problems with our insurance. So far we have saved $40,000
toward a $60,000 bill to replace them. If you would like to make a contribution toward the replacement of them,
you may drop it off at the Parish Office. Please mark the envelope “Bleacher replacement”.

FAMILY LIFE
St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank: The
SVDP food bank's wish list this week is for
more of the following items---mayonnaise
(15 oz size), spaghetti sauce, Cup of
Noodles, pancake syrup, jam (strawberry &
grape), paper towels. Thank you!
MISSION CARNIVAL NEEDS: Our annual
Mission Carnival is on May 3rd. We
need new or gently used stuffed animals
and small prizes. If you can contribute,
please bring items to the Pastoral Center
labeled “Mission Carnival.” Thank you!
Senior Moments monthly potluck luncheon is on
Tuesday, April 14th. We meet at
11:30AM in the Pastoral Center. See
you then, with your favorite dish to
share.
MANY THANKS to all the Easter Bunny’s helpers
who made it possible for us to provide 700 baskets to
those who otherwise would not have had
any. We appreciate your donations of
baskets, candy, grass and stuffed
animals. To the awesome group of
volunteers who came for the assembly
day...you were wonderful, and we finished in record
time!! To all those who donated money for us to buy
all the needed materials, and to those who contributed
on Palm Sunday for next year’s project, may God

Religious Ed. Service Project: The Religious Ed.
students put together personal care kits for underprivileged families (many homeless) who come
to the St. Francis House in Seattle. We are
in need of toothbrushes, small toothpastes,
small deodorants, small soaps, shampoos
and lotions (unused only, please). Thank you!

SACRAMENTAL INFORMATION
INFANT BAPTISM - Parents attend two sessions to prepare to celebrate this sacrament. We encourage parents to
attend before the birth or adoption of their child. Baptisms are normally celebrated at a weekend liturgy on the
first weekend of the month. Next preparation sessions are on Monday evenings, April 20th and 27th, 2015,
7-8:30PM in the Parish Office. The next baptisms are on May 3rd at 11AM, June 6th at 5PM, July 5th at
11AM and August 1st at 5PM. Please call the Parish Office to register.
MARRIAGE - Couples wishing to celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage should contact the parish at least 6
months prior to the desired date. Preparation for celebrating and living the sacrament is required.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK - is celebrated any time there is a serious illness or health crisis. Contact the parish
office to make arrangements. The sacrament is also celebrated periodically at a Sunday liturgy and on weekdays.
FUNERALS - Please contact the parish after a death, and before making arrangements with a funeral home.
CONFIRMATION - The Sacrament of Confirmation is celebrated yearly for those who are high school juniors or
seniors. Attendance at preparation sessions is required.
Adults who have not been confirmed may also celebrate the sacrament. Contact the Parish Office for
information about preparation.
FIRST RECONCILIATION/FIRST EUCHARIST - Children are prepared for these sacraments after completing a
year of remote preparation in either the school or religious education program. Parents attend preparation
sessions for each sacrament.
ADULT INITIATION - Adults who wish to join the Catholic Faith participate in sessions of the Rite of Christian
Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) Contact the parish for further information.
