The peace of God is with us; His presence is felt more mightily in our stillness.
By Daniel Lee
In the Gospel of John, Jesus assured us that His gift of peace is a mark of His presence; more
than anything the world can provide in the journey of our earthly pilgrimage, in calming the
storms of our lives.
For Jesus says, “I am leaving you with a gift - peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is
a gift the world cannot give. So don't be troubled or afraid,” (John 14: 27 NLT) for, “I have told
you these things, so that in me you may have peace.” (John 16:33a)
After Jesus’ resurrection, He appeared to His frightened disciples on the evening of that first
day of the week as they were gathering behind locked doors for fear of the Jewish leaders.
Jesus stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” (John 20:19) What a marvelous
assurance!
In the midst of our hectic lifestyle, our longing to gasp a breather from the suffocation of
stress, pressure and anxiety - the peace of God is all we need. It is God’s gift of His peace to
each of us as a lifeline in acknowledging His presence and dispel our fears.
Recently, I attended a class on Christian soul care and one of the fundamental spiritual
disciplines for soul care is self-examination of our awareness of God’s presence. The Psalmist
encourages us to “be still and know that He is God.” (Psalms 46:10) Therefore, to be quiet
means to stop frantic activity or anxious thoughts raging within us and be still. For in the
stillness, we embrace God’s presence.
The blessed assurance of God’s presence with His people is shown by His presence with Israel
when He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” (Exodus 33:14)
Jesus set an example for us when He dedicated His time with God for fellowship, strength and
direction to carry on His mission. We, too, need to devote moments of quietude with God as
our spiritual lifeline and a communion to long for His presence.
The two disciples who encountered Jesus while walking on the road to Emmaus offer an insight
about Jesus’ presence in our lives, especially in moments of sorrow, confusion or doubts. He
longs to be our constant companion, especially when we are traversing through stormy
seasons.
The Holy Spirit brings peace of mind to those facing difficult situations and helps us forge
peaceful relationships within our families, our marriage and our relationship with others just as
Paul encourages us to “make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of
peace.” (Ephesians 4:3)
Just as building a relationship entails diligent discipline, communication, patience, trust and
time, our yearning to foster a relationship with God that longs for His presence need our
commitment too.
Let us, then, encourage one another to set aside moments of stillness as part of our daily
routine to experience God’s presence, His comfort and His guidance. Allow His presence to
align our focus on Him, to open the door for His work in our lives and remind us that His peace
is with us.
Now, “may God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through” (1
Thessalonians 5:23a) and “may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in
Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13)

WHISPER OF THE WEEK Hebrews 13:1 "Keep on loving each other as brothers." The Lord
exhorts us to keep on loving as love is the only debt we owe our brothers. What is the standard
of love that God requires of us? In the simplest sense, I guess it would be to love your brother
as you would have loved yourself.

ASSISTANT PASTORS AT HPC We welcome and
congratulate Lawrence Khoo and Daniel Lee who are
appointed Assistant Pastors in their ministry roles.
The Assistant Pastor title is an official English Presbytery
conferment on ministry staff deemed by the Presbytery to be
theologically trained or qualified and are pursuing the
ordination track in their ministry. It also aptly describes the
ministry roles that our pastors are performing in the youth,
young adults, visitation and contact group ministries. This
position does not imply a leadership role in the EDC as EDC
members are specifically elected at the ACM/ECM.
