additional items needed for the bike or run.
Make sure you take some time to look at the
entrances / exits and make a mental note of
where your bike is racked!
SAFETY NOTE: The transition area will
remain ‘live’ with later wave athletes arriving
and racking their equipment whilst racing is
underway. Racking will be arranged such to
minimise overlap BUT all must be vigilant of
other athletes in the transition area.
Race Equipment
The Swim
You must have a roadworthy bike, with fully
functioning brakes on both wheels and bar ends
must be plugged.

A suitable, un-damaged helmet with a safety

in contact with your bike.
Please be ready to start and at the pool-side

• Big T Long: 600m, 24 lengths
• Big T Sprint: 400m, 16 lengths
Please exit the changing rooms on the dry
side into reception and enter into the pool area
through the pool spectator entrance door.

You then be requested to the reception-end of
the pool as your wave start time approaches.
Your lane marshal will tell you which direction
to swim in (clockwise or anti-clockwise) and tell
you when you can enter the water. Coloured
swim hats will be provided, and must be worn.
There will be a maximum of 4 swimmers per
lane.
You will be set off at the same time, so
you will need to seed your lane amongst
yourselves based on predicted times before
the start.
Only front crawl and breaststroke is permitted.
Please keep a mental track of your lengths –
the lap counters will indicate when you have 2
to go by placing a float or paddle into the water
as you approach the wall.
Please do not argue with the lap counters – it is
your responsibility to count laps.
If you feel a swimmer behind you touching your
feet please let them pass at the next turn.
First Transition (T1)
Leave the pool area at the shallow end through
the double doors. No running whilst on poolside
– this will result in automatic disqualification.
Turn right out of doors and follow the perimeter
of the building, past the sports centre entrance
to the tennis court transition area.
This is a distance of approximately 300m on
paving and tarmac, which will be swept on the
morning of the race. Please take care while
running barefoot to transition.
Enter transition and locate your bike.
You must put your helmet on and fasten it,
before you remove your bike from the rack.
No nudity in transition please – if you would like
to change fully, please use the changing rooms
available in the centre next to the pool.
Ensure your race number is clearly visible to the
rear while on the bike.
You may take as long as you like in transition
but bear in mind the clock will continue to run!
Leave transition and push your bike across the
grass playing field to the bike mount line at the
edge of the playing field in the car-park area
(see map above).

The Bike
• BIG T Race: 48km - out leg, 2 laps, in leg
• Big T Sprint Race: 25km - out leg, 1 lap,
in leg
Mount your bike at the exit from the school
grounds.
The route, as shown below, will be marked by
highly visible arrow markings and white painted
road markings.
Continue to follow the road ahead, unless you
see arrows telling you otherwise. All junctions
where a change of direction is required will be
clearly arrowed.
Any breach of traffic law or abuse of motorists
or marshals will not be tolerated. Dangerous or
6
abusive behaviour leads to disqualification.
Please adhere to the Highway Code and BTF
rules.
Drafting is not allowed. You must remain at
least 7 metres away from the bike in front. You
have 15 seconds in which to pass and then it’s
the responsibility of the passed rider to drop
back.
Mobile and static marshals will be instructed
to report any breach of the non-drafting rules.
Maximum penalty is disqualification from the
event.
If you see another athlete with problems, please
notify the next marshal location.
We will have a collection vehicle to pick up
competitors, and bikes that are unable to
complete the bike course. However, this vehicle
may take hours to reach you – all competitors
are advised to carry emergency supplies in
case of a puncture including:

•
Spare inner tube
Puncture patches/puncture kit
Tyre levers

SAFETY NOTE: There are three ‘prepare to
stop’ junctions where you must demonstrate
to the marshal that you are prepared to stop
by unclipping your foot (if riding clipless
pedals).
The first is at the roundabout onto Bradley
Road as you leave the minor roads near the
sports centre.
It is the competitor’s responsibility to ensure
they do the correct distance. Signs will clearly
mark the split.
The second is a right turn onto Brokerswood
Road with the final being a right turn onto
North Bradley Road.
Second Transition (T2)
Please ensure you have a forward facing
number.
The return to T2 will be clearly marked and
marshalled. You will arrive via the same route
as used to exit.
Dismount at the dismount line, as instructed, in
the car park area. Take care as you enter in to
the school grounds passing over the pavement.
Push your bike to transition. Rack your bike
before you undo your helmet.
SAFETY NOTE: The bike-in crosses the runout path. This area will be marshalled with
pathways marked. Pease be aware of other
competitors. The bike out and run out both
exit the transition area through the same
gate; again please show caution and be
aware of other competitors in this area.
Exit transition through the “Run out” gate.

The Run - 5km
The run course is a mixture of on- and off-road,
taking in pavements to Southwick Country
Park then the off-road gravel track around the
country park. If wet, this track can become
muddy.
Exit transition on to the run course through the
exit marked ‘Run Out’.
Take care on the run route as all highways and
footpaths are open to the public. Show caution
on the exit of the school grounds as you run
adjacent to the bike in/out routes.
The run route will be clearly marked by arrows
and road markings.
The 5km run route is an out-and-back route,
entering Southwick Country Park before turning
and retracing the route to Clarendon.
8
On return to the school grounds the run is
finished with a lap of the athletics track, ending
at the finishing area, where there will be hot
food and drinks available to purchase.
Please collect your kit from transition as soon
as possible, to allow this secure area to be
cleared.
SAFETY NOTE: The crossing from College
Road to Southwick Road (and then back in
to College Road on the return) is normally
made over a traffic light controlled crossing.
On race day, this junction will have a police
presence, in addition to race marshals,
to ensure a safe road crossing for all
competitors and hopefully ensure a run
which is not impeded by traffic.
The Run - 10km
The run course is a mixture of on- and off-road,
taking in pavements to Southwick Country
Park then the off-road gravel track around the
country park. If wet, this track can become
muddy.
Exit transition on to the run course through the
exit marked ‘Run Out’.
Take care on the run route as all highways and
footpaths are open to the public. Show caution
on the exit of the school grounds as you run
adjacent to the bike in/out routes.
The run route will be clearly marked by arrows
and road markings.
The 10km route is a run to Southwick County
Park. Competitors complete 3 laps of the
Southwick Park track.
When you pass the marshal for the 3rd time,
wearing two wrist bands you will be directed
back to the school grounds.
A wrist band will be issued at the end of Lap 1
and Lap 2.
