MUSIC PREP AUDITION REQUIREMENTS May 2015 Students are admitted to the prep program of HSA’s music division through an audition process that includes a theory placement test and an interview process. All applicants will be asked to sight read at the audition. Students asked to prepare the following repertoire for entrance into the music preparatory program. The listed selections are offered as a guideline for applicants and their teachers to consider in preparing for the audition. Any selection of a student’s repertoire that indicates a similar level of proficiency will be accepted. Note: Returning Prep students may perform any selection approved by the HSA faculty member with whom they take lessons. The student’s private instructor will be invited to attend. CLASSICAL GUITAR Diatonic Major and Minor Scales (Andres Segovia) Two contrasting selections I. Any Etude from Opus 6 (Fernando Sors) or Introduction, Theme, and Variations on a Theme, Opus 9 (Mozart) or any Etude or Prelude (Heitor Villa-Lobos) II. A choice of any solo guitar piece or transcription from any period VIOLIN, VIOLA, CELLO, BASS Major and Minor Scales: 2 or 3 octaves with arpeggios Two contrasting movements of a sonata or concerto or a work by Bach PIANO Major and Minor Scales: 2 or 4 octaves with arpeggios Two contrasting movements of a solo work or a work by Bach FLUTE, OBOE, CLARINET, BASSOON Major and Minor Scales: 2 or 3 octaves Two contrasting movements of a sonata or concerto TRUMPET, FRENCH HORN, TROMBONE, TUBA Major and Minor Scales: 2 or 3 octaves Two contrasting movements of a sonata or concerto VOICE A classical song of the applicant's choice sung in English, an art song in Italian, French or German, a song from a Broadway musical or a Spiritual. JAZZ REQUIREMENTS ! MUSIC PREP AUDITION REQUIREMENTS May 2015 JAZZ AND CONTEMPORARY STUDIES Potential HSA Prep students interested in having a Jazz or Contemporary Studies focus (including Contemporary Composition and Songwriting) should audition during the Jazz/Contemporary Studies auditions taking place Friday, May 8th [note: students not sure about where they would like to be placed should audition on their instrument during the separate Piano, Percussion, Winds, and Strings auditions and then also audition for Jazz/Contemporary Studies; afterwards you will be appropriately placed if invited to join the Prep program]. The requirements for the Jazz and Contemporary Studies auditions are the following: For all instruments (besides drums): 1) one medium tempo, jazz "head" composition or blues melody, performed in the following manner: WIND INSTRUMENTS/STRINGS: lead melody, followed by soloing over at least 2 choruses. PIANO/GUITAR: lead melody, followed by soloing over at least 2 choruses. You will also separately be asked to "comp" (play the chord changes) for at least 2 choruses. BASS: lead melody, followed by soloing over 1 chorus. You will also separately be asked to play walking bass for at least 2 choruses over the piece. 2) Major and Minor scales (2 or more octaves) FOR DRUMS: demonstrate jazz (4/4/ swing) time (slow/medium/fast) over 2 choruses of a 12-bar blues. demonstrate at least 2 other "feels" (including from such possible styles as: rock, Latin, jazz ballad using brushes). FOR CONTEMPORARY COMPOSITION/SONGWRITING: perform 2 original pieces (1 piece can also be presented in the form of a recording, if you prefer) demonstrate some technical proficiency on an instrument of your choice (piano/guitar/voice, etc.) by performing one piece (classical or jazz/popular) and by playing major/minor scales.
