HISTORY OF HVFC
The modern Happy Valley Football Club was born in 1951 and began
playing football in 1952 in blue and gold guernsey's in the Hills Central
League. In the early sixties the club left the Hills competition to join the
Glenelg, South and West League. To avoid clashing with Glandore the
Vikings made the adjustment to black and gold, the colours, we as a
club now call our own.
The Vikings won premierships at the top level in both 1970 and 1974 under
the captaincy of Wayne Baxter, but these were in the third div ision of the
league. The Happy Valley/Aberfoyle Park area was mostly vineyards or
sheep paddocks at this time. We held an insignificant power until the
eighties when we joined the Southern League. We were accepted in
Division 11 and made the Grand Final in our first season, playing regular
finals football until 1984 when we moved to Div ision 1.
The mid eighties in Division1 saw the Vikings on the end of some big
thrashings. At that moment, the mood changed and a lot of people, too
many to mention, decided to change the culture of the football club.
Some important and bold decisions were made that turned our reputation as one of the easy teams in the competition, into one of the most
feared and respected clubs in the SFL.
We threatened to make the finals in 1990 and eventually got there in
1991, as well as winning premierships in 1992,1993,1995,1996,1998 and
1999. A couple of years passed when we waited for our juniors to become men and we won an A Grade premiership in 2003. From then we
never missed a finals series and in 2012 our A Grade won another premiership against Brighton.
Many relate our success to the development of the area, neighbouring
one of the biggest High School’s in the state, but to be the best requires
more than numbers. You also need the best coaches, the best trainers,
the best support staff and the best administration. We have been very
fortunate to have had an exceptional quality of personnel involved at all
levels of our club. Our forefathers have left a legacy we can all be proud
of and we can all walk taller on the back of their success. Our standards
are high, our expectations are high, and the rewards so far have been
worth the effort. Lets continue the legacy and club success in 2015 and
beyond.
Wear the Big “V” proudly!

HVFC PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
A big welcome to all our players, sponsors, supporters and volunteers
for season 2015.
Last year was another successful year for the Club, taking out the Champion Club of the SFL for the third year running. This is a tremendous
achievement for the Club and highlights the overall strength of the Club
through Sub Juniors, Juniors and Seniors. This award cannot be underestimated and shows that the Club continues to be the envy of others in the
SFL.
At the end of the 2014 season our A Grade and Club coach Matthew
Dent decided not to continue with the Club. I would like to thank Matthew for his work over the last four years. The Club wishes him all the best
with his future involvements in football.
In October 2014, we announced our new A Grade and Club coach,
Stephen Keam. Stephen comes highly recommended and has been involved in football at an SANFL and SFL level both as a player and coach
at various clubs and has been a past board member at South Adelaide
Football Club. I hope you will join me in welcoming Stephen to the Club.
During the course of the year Derek Rogers filmed footage to use in a
movie about the Club. He spoke to past players, past committee people, club legends, current players, sponsors and filmed footage of games.
I am looking forward to seeing the final product and this movie will be an
important tool for the Club in the future.
Finally, we cannot afford to become complacent. We have fantastic
facilities, good Junior program, developing Senior group and great committee but we need to always be looking for opportunities for improvement. Continuous improvement and succession planning should be
paramount in our thinking and in every decision we make the overall
goal of the Happy Valley Football Club should be considered. The question we should always be asking is “is this decision helping HVFC to be the
best Club in the Southern Football League?”

HVFC JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT POLICY
The Happy Valley Football Club endeavours to:
12
•
Promote and foster junior football at HVFC by organizing team
structure and discipline and encouraging team and individual
success.
•
Formulate policies for the expansion and improvement of junior
football.
•
Encourage promotion of players to a higher grade for their betterment in consultation with players, parents and coaches. To be
challenged, a junior must play with and against players of their
own skill level or better and not just be left to dominate in their
age group.
•
Allow the coach of a higher grade to promote a player from a
lower grade.
•
Arrange that no player misses a game due to extra numbers on a
weekend. If numbers are suitable then no player will play more
than one game on a weekend if this causes other players to miss
out on a game.
•
Organise with the Football Director the training format for all
teams to be consistent with that of the senior grades
•
Organise the attendance of senior players and coaches to junior
and sub junior training to develop every players skills and ability.
•
Players are required to wear HVFC attire (jackets, polos, jumpers
etc) to games to show their support.

•
•
•
•
•

•
•
Play by the rules
Never argue with an official or umpire.
If you disagree with an umpires decision have your coach or team
manager approach the official during a break or after the match.
Control your temper.
Verbal abuse of officials or other players deliberately distracting or
provoking an opponent is not acceptable or permitted in any sport.
Work equally hard for yourself and/or for your team. Your team’s
performance will benefit and so will you.
Be a good sport.
Treat all players as you would like to be treated.
Do not interfere with, bully or take unfair advantage of another
player.
Cooperate with your coach, team-mates and opponents. Without
them there would be no competition.
Play for the “FUN OF IT” and not just to please parents and coaches.
Avoid the use of derogatory language based on gender, race etc.
Remember that undue and/or unnecessary
breaches of the above may see you sent from
the ground or reported. This will not only reflect
on you but also your team and may put your
team at a disadvantage and may result in you

HEAT POLICY
The Happy Valley Football Club Hot Weather Policy has been adapted
from the SANFL Hot Weather Policy and will assist volunteers, players, officials and spectators to undertake necessary action in cases of extreme
hot weather. This is to prevent injury, and possible death, from heat illness
by recognizing and managing potentially dangerous heat situations.
The Happy Valley Football Club recognizes that the risk of an elevated
body temperature from high intensity sport in a hot environment is significant, and can lead to heat illness presented as heat exhaustion and
heat stroke. The Happy Valley Football Club also recognizes that children
are at a higher risk than adults. Symptoms can be worse if fluid replacement during exercise is inadequate which leads to fluid loss and dehydration.

VOLUNTEERS
The involvement of volunteers at HVFC is the key to success and long
term sustainability of the Club. The commitment volunteers make in terms
of their time is substantial. Volunteers are vital to the successful running of
HVFC. Clubs rely on volunteers to take an activ e interest in the future of
their organisation and their specific roles within it. As a part of the HVFC
community it is required that each member is to donate a few hours of
their time over the course of the season. This time can be utilized in the
following ways:
How can you help?
On the Field:
• Goal umpires,
• Boundary umpires
• Water runners
• Become a trainer
• Interchange steward
• Time keeper
• Set up and cleaning of the grounds before & after a home game
• Scoreboard attendants
Off the field:
• Wash guernseys
• Help in the canteen
• Help in the BBQ
• Help on the gate on game days
• Assisting in oval set up and clean up for social events
• Join the committee
A volunteer roster will be giv en to each player and it is an expectation
that this is adhered to - club hour penalties will apply if players do not
attend. If you are unable to do your shift, please find someone to do
your shift for you and let the team manager and a committee member
know.
More hands make light work, every little bit helps—
the club cannot run without you!

HVFC SPONSORSHIP
Dear Member,
Season 2014 was another sensational year for the Happy Valley Football
Club, being awarded the Southern Football League Club of the Year for
the third year in a row.
All teams with the exception of the Under 14 Sunday squad made finals
for the second year running with the B Grade taking home the silverware
this time. The junior development plan at the Happy Valley Football Club
is proving to be very successful with many players playing in higher
grades in 2014.
The 2015 season will be an exciting one for the Club with a new Club and
A grade coach at the helm. We have a mix of experienced and new
coaches and committee and will be looking to build on our successes
from 2014 both on and off the field.
Off field HVFC are seeking funds to continue to provide our membership
with the best facilities that we can offer. Projects that the football club
are currently working towards include nets behind the goals and an electronic scoreboard that we can operate from the timing bench. Funds are
also needed for the increasing running costs of the football department
in general.
I believe that the Happy Valley Football Club represents great value for
the sponsorship dollar. For current sponsors it would be great to see you
back again in 2015 and we certainly welcome any new sponsors.
