Some of you may have heard about it. It was in all the best newspapers. It was on TV
and the interwebs. It was such an historic event that even Peter Mansbridge talked
about it. In the province immediately to our right the citizens did the unthinkable on May
5th. They celebrated Cinco de Mayo in a most Canadian revolutionary sort of way.
They decided that they had put up with enough crap from their provincial government;
44 years of it to be exact, and wanted them removed from office. But, being Canadians
they wanted such a coup d’etat to be done in a polite and orderly sort of way.
What they did was astonishingly bold in its audacity, yet brilliant in its shear simplicity.
The citizens of Alberta, with a double, double firmly gripped in one clenched hand and a
Timbit in the other walked and ran and cycled and drove to schools, church halls and
civic meeting centers all across their province, armed themselves with a #2 black pencil
and proceeded to use it with extreme prejudice. They took those pencils, marked a lot of
big black X’s in a lot of white circles on a lot of ballots and made an old, tired and terrible
government disappear like a cheap Vegas magic trick.

With an average age of just 38 years old, many Alberta
voters have never known anything other than a Conservative government in their lifetimes stretching back 44
years to 1971 and Peter Lougheed. They were like East
Germans overthrowing the Communist government and
tearing down the Berlin Wall. It was all they had ever
known. It was their security blanket. They vaulted themselves into the Great Wide Open with that flood of bold
and hopeful X’s.
What they did was to take a leap of faith into the unknown with the NDP party hoping and trusting that it just
had to be a better choice for government than the Conservative Devil they have known for their entire lives in
many cases. Most political commentators and pundits set
their hair on fire over the sheer lunacy of such a radical
shift in the status quo. This is Canada after all and we
are not used to this type of political radicalism unless tu
parle Francais.
Quebec has always been the home of intelligent strategic
voting both provincially and federally within the Canadian
federation. From the outside it looks chaotic and without
reason. From the inside it is always voting with intent for
change; hopefully for the better. Quebecers more than
any other political jurisdiction in Canada are willing to
take strategic political leaps of faith in order to attain their
goals. Like their beloved Rouge, Blanc et Bleu, you win
some, you lose some but they always got game.
This was also the case in Big Blue Alberta this month.
Maybe they were drunk with Red Fever for the Flames
but no matter. Albertans took a very bold political step
into the unknown in the hopes of bettering their lives and
restoring good governance for themselves and their families. I think and hope their radical political experimentation will prove to be a very pleasant surprise for most of
them.
I am fairly certain that it will be much less pleasant for 27
Conservative Albertans who are currently employed as
migrant workers in Ottawa. Hopefully their term of employment will prove to be temporary and that the voters
of Alberta will act in concert to bring them home from Ottawa and reunite them with their families in Alberta in
October.

In what can only be described as political Kismet by most
Canadians, Prime Minister Stephen Harper is now represented provincially by three NDP MLAs. He will now get
a chance to see firsthand how an elected servant of the
people is supposed to act and represent those voters
who have placed their trust and faith in him. Hopefully he
focuses on the whole “more citizens’ interests and less
business’ interests” thingy first and foremost. Or perhaps
he may just perform another Beatles song on his keyboard in the hope that Hey Jude will take a sad election
and make it better.
The IAM&AW has a very close and personal tie to one of
the 53 new NDP Alberta MLAs who swept into power on
May 5th. Brother Jamie Kleinsteuber, who is an 18 year
member of the IAM&AW and a proud member of LL1681
in Calgary, was elected as the MLA for Calgary Northern
Hills, defeating the Conservative incumbent in that riding
by almost 1,300 votes.
Jamie is an Air Canada employee who worked in the
Customer Service group at YYC prior to his election. He
received a great deal of support from the members of
LL1681 during his election campaign. Brothers Ryan
Wick, Kent Yanciw and Keith Aitken were amongst a
group of key political activists and supporters from
LL1681 for both Jamie and the Alberta NDP.
A lot of our Brothers and Sisters in Alberta worked very
hard to help the NDP achieve this historic political victory.
On behalf of the Executive and members of Local Lodge
764 I offer sincere congratulations and best wishes to
Brother Kleinsteuber in his new and hopefully long career
as a public servant.
As Parliament winds down their 2015 spring session in
the next month and the MPs head back to their ridings
and onto the annual summer BBQ and rubber chicken
circuit of political fundraisers you will start to see more
and more of your tax dollars being spent by the Harper
Conservative government telling you what a fantastic job
they have been doing in Ottawa for the last 10 years. As
my grandfather used to say, never let the facts get in the
way of a good story.

The date for the 2015 Canadian federal election will be
Monday, October 19th, 2015. You will witness an unprecedented orgy of spending by all political parties
between now and then telling you how only their party
can fulfill your dreams and how only their fearless leader can keep you and your family wealthy and safe while
you sleep at night. The Conservative government will
also burn through millions more of your tax dollars on
self-promotional partisan advertising during this period
as well. It’s good to be the King.
Most of us simply try and plug our ears, shut our eyes
and pray for it all to be over as quickly as possible. October seems such a very long way away. The problem
is that is exactly what some political parties want. They
want to discourage you from voting and they certainly
want to discourage you from informed, knowledgeable
and intelligent voting. Big business cannot vote. They
recognized decades ago that they can only control democracy with huge sums of money strategically spent
to discourage targeted groups of citizens from voting.
Ironically $75 million of your tax dollars are being spent
to tell you what prudent and responsible fiscal Ninjas
the Harper Conservatives are. And that $75 Million is
just on advertising the Grand Wizardry of their 2015
budget. They want you to know how they have balanced the budget, cut your taxes, helped you save
more for your retirement and by you; I mean people
with an annual income that ends in a minimum of five
zeros.
You may have seen the recent taxpayer funded partisan vanity videos of Conservative Employment Minister
Pierre Poilievre extoling the virtues of their child-care
benefit to the same taxpayers whose money he is
spending on these self-promotional videos. Poilievre is
only 35 years old and has been a Conservative policy
researcher and MP for 15 of them. I guess it is easy to
not see the context on acceptable and unacceptable
taxpayer funded spending when your entire adult working life has been spent inside the Ottawa bubble as a
Member of Parliament.

As we move into the run-up to the Monday, October
19th federal election Local Lodge 764 will be engaging
with our members to encourage each and every one of
you to exercise your democratic right to get out and
vote. We have a very active Political Action Committee
and we invite any of our members who would like to
get involved with the democratic process to contact us.
The information that is available to you as voters is
contradictory, confusing and most certainly biased by
the mainstream business centric media. We will concentrate on informing our members about issues that
affect them and their families in their everyday lives
both at home and on the job. We will endeavor to simplify the issues and present the positions of the major
parties on each of these issues to help you determine
which party best represents your social, fiscal and
workplace interests.
It will be a lot of information. We hope that you take the
time to read and understand it. More importantly we
hope that you feel compelled or engaged or enraged
enough to grab your double, double and your Timbit on
Monday, October 19th and take your own walk or run or
cycle or drive to make the change you want and vote
for the Canada that you want to live in and the Canada
that you want your children to grow up in.

federal counterparts and all of their multinational oil
and gas industry business donors and supporters

My faith in Canadian common sense and decency has
been reaffirmed. I am very pleased to see that in Alberta this month, democracy defeated fear by a very large
margin of victory.

Johnston and Grace McCarthy used their business and
political skills to wrest the airport away from Federal Government control, and help it become the third largest economic generator for the province of British Columbia.
This brings us to the 23rd Annual General Meeting of the
Vancouver Airport Operating Authority, held Thursday,
May 14, 2015 in the East Concourse, International Terminal Building and called to order at 1530 hours by YVRAA

While these numbers and project completions were excellent, YVRAA is not resting on its laurels. Other airports
(notably Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles,
and Dallas) are just as aggressive in pursuing airlines for
new routes to their destination as is YVRAA. Notable this
year was YVRAA’s ability to attract Air France, Icelandair,
and AeroMexico (December 2015) to Vancouver.
Increased efforts have also been made to attract more
South-East Asian and Chinese carriers, and to that end,
more resources were allocated to a YVRAA subsidiary in
Hong Kong to pursue this business. Discussions are continuing with Federal Government authorities to relax the
“Transit without Visa” (TWOV) regulations, and allow
Asian passengers minimum handling at Vancouver (with
direct bag transfer to their connecting flight) on their way
to Europe, the United States, Latin and South America.
Two TWOV pilot projects (one involving the Air Canada

and was advised that the problem had been found and
corrected. I also raised the issue at this year’s AGM of

the YVRAA in 1992 and a short while later his consultancy
became a subsidiary of the Airport Authority called VISTAS.
VISTAS was purchased from YVRAA by its employees in 1994
and became InterVistas, and now, after multiple mergers and
acquisitions, is part of the global transportation advisory group
Royal HaskoningDHV. Dr. Michael Tretheway is the Chief Economist and Strategy Officer for Royal KaskoningDHV. InterVistas
did $1.05M worth of untendered consulting business for
YVRAA in 2014.
YVRAA hopes to achieve total economic control of airport
activity. Such control is now enjoyed by the Airports of Singapore (Changai) and Hong Kong (Chok Lep). In these two examples, the Airport provides every service to the airline, and the
airline arrives and departs from the Airport with aircraft and
flight crews only.
