Goldstein has embodied these traits
every single day she has blessed our
community with her presence.
She is exceptionally smart—envisioning
creative programs, classes and often
single-handedly bringing together large
committees to get the work done.
She is courageous—time and again
standing up for her beliefs about
education, her commitment to the
children and families she works with,
and the Judaism she carries in her heart
and on her sleeve.
She is the embodiment of kindness.
She teaches her passion for Judaism
and community-building here at IHC,
and throughout our city. We often take
for granted how exceptional our school
and family education programs are,
because Marcia has always celebrated
the contributions of others.
The “Huggy Bubby” will not soon be
forgotten in the halls of our congregation.
Her warmth, her generosity, and her
spirit have helped us become who we
are, and she and Marv continue to leave
their indelible mark at IHC. Please join us

We announce with joy the Bar/Bat Mitzvah of…
Carly Levinsohn will be called to the Torah on April 18, 2015.
She is the daughter of John and April Levinsohn and has an older
sister, Allie Levinsohn. Carly attends The Orchard School and is in
the 7th grade. She plays the violin and the flute in the school band.
Carly is an avid oyster sheller, loves to read, and adores animals.
She enjoys theatre and was so excited to be a part of the school
musical Beauty and the Beast. Most of all, she likes spending time
with family and friends.
David Bender will be called to the Torah on April 25, 2015. David
is the son of Gary and Vicky Bender of Carmel and is the older
brother to Matthew. He is a 7th grader at Park Tudor where he
plays soccer and serves as a leader of the middle school Vex
robotics team. David is a First Class Boy Scout and plays for the
Indiana Fire Juniors Soccer Club. He sings in the 7th grade chorus
and plays trombone in the middle school band.

CHANTS ENCOUNTERS

Every nation has what is called a “Master Story,” an
event or series of events that are recounted and
remembered generations later. The “Master Story”
of the Jews is the Exodus from Egypt, which we remember annually at
the Passover seder. However, philosopher Carol Ochs suggests that our
story begins earlier than the Exodus. For Ochs, the Jewish Story has 9
points.
The first of these is the existence of God. Next comes creation, the
materialization of space and time. Then comes humanity, the formation
of a sacred space created in God’s image—human beings. The next step
in the story is enslavement; people forget God, creation, and humanity.
Step five is liberation—memory is restored to us. Step six, covenant,
means that our memory is intensified. Only then can we experience
revelation, the knowledge that everything in the world reveals the
holy. However, that is not the end of the story. As the Torah recounts we
still must wander and seek the holy until we arrive at the final step, the
Promised Land—the place where we can live up to our promise.
Ochs’ story is a summation of the Torah. At Passover we retell only a
portion of the story: enslavement and liberation. However, our task as
Jews is to be mindful of the entire story and make every effort to reach
the Promised Land. Unfortunately, Ochs believes that most of us are
stuck in living the fourth step: enslavement.
How do we move from enslavement to the Promised Land? At Passover
we retell the story of liberation. The seder includes a wonderful text
which reminds us of the rest of the story as well. It probably is the best
known of all the songs we sing and the least studied. “Dayeinu—it
would have been enough” is the refrain of the text which begins with
the Exodus and ends with the building of the Temple in Jerusalem. While
the traditional text reflects the fears that our people have felt through
the ages, the overall message is that we can reach the Promised Land
and live up to our promise as God’s partners.
Another way we can be moved toward the Promised Land is to worship
together. The more we pray, the more we are reminded of our story in
all its possibility. When we look at the text of our prayers, we see each
of the elements of the Jewish story. Our liturgy is a regular reminder of
who we are and what we can be. Passover is another in our Jewish cycle
of beginnings. This year, let us seize the opportunity to learn and grow
from it.

FROZEN??? Read Jewish Books—They’re THAWsome!, the
theme of the 2015 Religious School-Temple Library sponsored
program was appropriately named for the cold winter we
experienced. We have had wonderful participation and hope
children have enjoyed and learned a great deal about Judaism
while polishing their reading skills. Be certain to complete
the “Frozen” cards in the pockets of the books your children
borrowed and return them by Sunday, April 19. Contact the
librarian with any questions about the program.
Return Books—There still are many adult and children’s books
due to be returned. A great spring cleaning task is to find library
books in all sorts of nooks and crannies of the house and car
and to bring them back to the Temple Library. Our books for
children have yellow or red labels on the spine to differentiate
from public library, school library, and Bureau of Jewish
Education library books. We appreciate your help!

what was happening to Jews as the country morphed from the
Tzarist regime to the 1917 revolution to the Soviet Union, we see
how families lived and survived under difficult circumstances.
The Paris Architect, also a debut novel, was written by Charles
Belfoure, a professional architect. In the early 1940s, Lucien,
a striving young Paris architect, is asked to design areas in
buildings where Jews could hide temporarily when Nazis were
searching for them. Lucien is reluctant but does it initially for
the money. Gradually he takes on the challenge as a way to
save innocent people. He manages to resolve personal issues
and develops an intellectual relationship with a disillusioned
Nazi officer. The characters and the plot keep the readers on
edge.

WHAT’S NEW
The first Passover Seder this year is on Friday night, April 3.
In case you are looking for last-minute recipes we have two
cookbooks to recommend. For other springtime reading, there
is a children’s book as well as two novels to suggest.
The New York Times Passover Cookbook: More Than 200 Holiday
Recipes From Top Chefs and Writers, edited by Linda Amster with
an introduction by Joan Nathan, has a variety of recipes that
include both traditional and newer additions to the Passover
table. The format is user-friendly, recipes are easy to read and
the chances are you will find or adapt a recipe for your family’s
tastes.
Passover By Design: Picture-perfect Kosher by Design Recipes
For The Holiday is Susie Fishbein’s adaptation of some of her
Kosher By Design recipes plus new ones she created specifically
for Passover. More than 130 of the recipes are gluten-free.
The fabulous photography of John Uher complements this
attractive and colorful book.
Goldie Takes A Stand! Golda Meir’s First Crusade, by Barbara
Krasner with illustrations by Kelsey Garrity-Riley, is based on
an incident from Golda’s childhood. Nine year-old Goldie is
the president of the American Young Sisters Society of Jewish
immigrants from Russia who leads a campaign to provide
textbooks for the children in her Minneapolis elementary
school. Despite some setbacks, she is able to achieve her
goal. This is a good introduction to the life of the future Prime
Minister of Israel.
The Little Russian, a debut novel for adults by Susan Sherman, a
co-creator of Disney’s “That’s So Raven,” chronicles the story of
Berta, a Ukrainian native whose life takes many turns during the

As I am sitting here writing this I am still seeing snow on the ground and today being 30
degrees outside felt like a heat wave. I hope that as you read this there are fresh buds on the
trees, flowers peeking through the grass and a warm breeze blowing in the air.
Our third annual Women’s Seder brought together women of all ages to celebrate Passover
with a women’s point of view. It was an evening of prayer, song, and dance; also an evening
of wonderful traditions, food, friendship, and new ideas. I want to thank Patty Goodman,
,Elyse Chuvalas and their amazing committee. Everything was perfect! I also want to thank
Cantor Janice Roger and Tami Krichiver for leading our Seder and inspiring us all.
I wish for all of you and your families a very warm and joyous Passover.

religious, social, and educational growth and enhance Jewish life by supporting clergy,
cultivating women's leadership, advocating for social justice, providing programming,
and offering support.

The Sisterhood Raffle will be held on Sunday, June 7 at the Spring Sisterhood meeting.
You should be receiving the mailing soon. This is one of Sisterhood's most important

Julian Center as well as general support of the congregation such as Religious School
and special programming. The Raffle will be set up like last year where you may choose
the prize you would like to win. This year's prizes include jewelry, manicure/spa services,

of tickets and plan on coming to the Spring meeting on June 7.

Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN)
HAVE FUN AND HELP HOMELESS CHILDREN
AND THEIR FAMILIES
For 20 years the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN), now
known as Family Promise-IHN, has been providing temporary
shelter and support to homeless children and their families
in Indianapolis and then helping them find and keep safe,
affordable housing
IHC congregants have long supported Family Promise-IHN
by hosting homeless families at the Temple. Here’s another
important way to help homeless families by supporting
Family Promise-IHN. Join the IHC team and teams from other
congregations and organizations from across the city for a fun
afternoon with family, friends and
pets at the 2015 Walking for Dreams
5K Family and Pet Walk on the
downtown canal on Sunday afternoon, May 17.
Walkers of all ages, including pets, can help Family PromiseIHN by raising pledges and then walking. One hundred per
cent of every dollar raised by the IHC team goes directly to
Family Promise-IHN.

April is a quiet month for YOUth due to school spring breaks. I’m happy to say that all
YOUth groups have been having a lot of fun and getting a lot done. Just a couple of
weeks ago, IFTY participated in the Kenya Carnival, an interfaith youth driven event,
raising money to help children attend school in Kenya. Then at IHC IFTY held its annual
Purim Carnival. There was a silent auction to raise money for Help Hope Live, the
organization help Ethan Kadish.
Spring Kallah was a huge success and IFTY hosted like professionals. All the hard work
paid off. IHC showed how beautiful our community is.
Small Chai boys and girls have had such fun getting to know each other and building
relationships not only with students in their classrooms. But in the other grades as
well. I am so proud of them. As always, if you ever have any questions about YOUth

SECOND SUNDAY CONCERT
Bay Street Horns on Fire
April 12 at 2:00 pm
Bay Street Horns on Fire is a funky jazz ensemble that performs new, exciting
arrangements of familiar jazz, classical, Dixie, and rock tunes. The group features
Glen Johnson, Trumpet; Shawn Goodman, Clarinet; Bob Burns, Saxes; John Morse,
Trombone; Bill Schmidt, Tuba; and Michael Totty, Drums. This ensemble, in various
forms, has toured the United States and Korea presenting performances and
educational workshops, received first prize at the 2003 New York Quintet Competition,
has received several grants from various arts councils, and has been endorsed by
Yamaha.
Second Sunday Concerts are made possible by the generosity of IHC’s Brotherhood
and Sisterhood as well as the Cantor Janice L. Roger Music Fund.
These programs are free and open to the public.
