Another World: Portraits from Ohura Tony Carter
Another World: Portraits from Ohura is a result of 30 visits to Ohura (Manawatu-Whanganui region) over the period of
a year. By chance, I stopped as I was passing through one day and was fascinated by the people there. I grew up
in a rural environment and I feel I understand the ‘no airs and graces’ attitude of the residents. I wanted to capture
the rawness and humanness of Ohura. The people who live there don’t fit in to the mainstream – they live in Ohura
because it is a place where they can be honest and real about who they are. I tried to reflect that honesty in my work.
Ohura represents a different type of cultural diversity. I spent a lot of time with the residents, listening to their stories
and getting to know them. Once I’d finished working on each photograph, I took it back to the resident for them to
see. That way I built up their trust – they could see I was working in a respectful manner.
My Ohura photographs are full of intensely personal objects and locations that reflect the lives of each resident I
photographed. Character houses, domestic clutter, faded posters, beloved pets, tattoos – I wanted the portraits
to be intimate, honest and direct.

Ambrotypes and Alchemy - Contemporary use of Wet Plate Collodion in New Zealand Paul Alsop
Ambrotypes are images made on glass with silver and light using the Wet Plate Collodion (WPC) process.
The technique is the third oldest form of photography and the earliest form of Polaroid, dating back to 1851. The
images produced are archival and unique objects in their own right. The technique is antiquated for a reason, as
it is cumbersome, expensive and highly involved, however, as many people have become disillusioned with digital
photography and as film is often cost prohibitive, the Ambrotype and the Tintype are undergoing a revival worldwide. New Zealand is an island nation with limited ‘wet plate’ resources and strict border control. Paul will discuss the
limitations, frustrations, deviations and how the ‘can do Kiwi’ attitude has been applied to keep this marvelous
process alive and kicking in Aotearoa. Topics covered include:
• The History: Early photographic techniques and early NZ photographers
• The Science: Basic science and chemistry
• The Process: Learning by my mistakes
• The Limitations: Reasons why photography evolved
• The Aesthetic: Forget the fluff, it’s all about the final image

Preparing for Serendipity - How planning and preparedness allows us to get lucky How embracing
our client’s demands and constraints allows us the freedom to create art Jason Naylor
Our wedding photography business is a service business - we exist to please our clients.
We have a responsibility to create imagery for them - they are our #1 priority.
However, as artists, and we’re constantly looking to push ourselves, create something new,
something that excites us. There’s no routine or status quo. Every day, every shot, is something unique.
We actively embrace this paradox of the client’s requests vs our creative vision - using their constraints
to give ourselves a canvas, and thoroughly planning to help spark ideas to create something new.
We believe constraints and limitations are necessary in creativity. This presentation will show you how we use them.

The Hub
Have you ever watched a speaker and had a burning question,
but didn’t want to ask it in front of 200 delegates?
Well, now’s your chance!
Our friendly and approachable speakers will be based at The Hub
and ready & willing to chat about everything and anything.
Bring them a coffee (our speakers like coffee!),
pull up a chair or bean bag, and discuss life’s (or photography’s) big questions!
Gear n Action
Let’s face it…..
most of us photographers love new photographic gear.
But it’s so hard in an industry exhibition to get that gear out of the glass cabinets!
That’s why we have Gear n Action! It’s a space for exhibitors to showcase,
let you touch, feel, try out and more.
