Nothing like visiting a conservatory to get you in
the mood for spring! This is the Wintergarden
glass house in Auckland’s Domain park, the city’s
oldest gardens, built around the cone of an extinct volcano. The Domain includes formal gardens and a duck pond that was the source for the
city’s first piped water supply in 1886. The Wintergarden is a World Heritage site and includes 2
greenhouses, a formal courtyard and a fernery in
the old quarry.

From the Editor
Everything old is new again—and some stuff is just plain new! In this issue you’ll
find some of the New Products we found at TPIE 2015, with more to follow in the
March issue of our sister publication, Urban Horticulture, which hits your email
inbox on March 17. What’s new or new-again? How about topiaries, terrariums, a few new plants,
plus dye-infused orchids, containers and smaller versions of vertical gardens, some which sit on
your desktop. Plus one new and one re-vamped CEU program from our friends at Green Plants for
Green Buildings.
You’ll also enjoy reading about the Malaysian Coconut Palm, which won the Cool Products Award
for the Morning Dew Tropical Plants team. Plus a very special offer from Architectural Supplements
to have your projects featured in their new brochure, deadline is March 31.
Speaking of deadlines—the deadline for submitting your projects for our International Design
Contest is also coming up soon. Be sure to register your very best work in this contest so you can
be featured in I-Plants and Urban Horticulture magazine. What a great way to be recognized for the
work you’ve done in 2014—which includes a plaque and news release for all winners. And this is
the ONLY contest that gets you international recognition in the only trade journal just for interiorscapers!
Welcome back—to Dave Winter with his new company, Midwest Tropicals, who starts advertising
with us in this issue. It’s good to “’have you back where you belong!”
Remember to thank our advertisers and let them know you found them in these pages.

Malayan
Coconut
Palm
Guzmania ‘Milena’ and John Mendozza
By John Mendozza
Morning Dew Tropical Plants
The Malayan Coconut Palm is a
great plant to bring in a tropical
feel! They come in a variety of
sizes and are easy to care for.
The Malayan Coconut Palm, Cocos nucifera, is part of the Arecaceae family, which is the palm
family. The origin of the Malayan Coconut Palm is unknown,
but is thought to come from
parts of Southeast Asia.
It comes in a number of varieties, named for the color of the
fruit. The Green Malayan Coconut Palm, for example, has a
green coconut. Other varieties
include the red, yellow, and
golden.
In smaller pot sizes, you can see
the exposed coconut, making it a
fun and novel item!
The Malayan Coconut Palm can
do well indoors or outdoors. It
makes a great container plant on
a patio or as a focal point in a
tropical landscape. The Malayan
Coconut Palm will flourish in
warm conditions with high humidity, and abundant light, but it
will still grow well in
lower light or partial
hade. It will tend to
reach upward in lower
light.
Like most palms, it salttolerant once established.
The Malayan Coconut
Palm will generally flower in four to six
years and outdoors it tends to be selfpruning; the fronds will turn brown
and simply fall off as new ones
emerge.
Indoors, it likes to be watered thoroughly every 10 to 12 days. If planted
outdoors, the Malayan Coconut Palm
does well in a sandy- or other welldraining soil mix and should be
watered every day.
The 6” Green Malayan Coconut Palm
has been very popular, winning the
“Cool Product Award” at TPIE this
year, and is going fast!
For more information on Morning Dew
Tropical Plants go to
www.morningdewtropical.com
Under the right conditions,
Malayan Coconut Palms can
reach heights of 30 to 60 feet,
with a spread of 15 to 25 feet.
A fertilizer can be applied during the active growing season
to encourage more vigorous
growth.

Heathy Art Brochure 2015
Architectural Supplements
RECEIVE $500 CREDIT OR MORE FOR PHOTOS OF YOUR INSTALLATIONS!
Based on the tremendous popularity of our first Healthy Art Brochure, Architectural Supplements
is announcing a contest for Healthy Art 2! We’re looking for beautiful photos of your installations
using our products. All entries will be considered, but extra consideration will be given to shots
featuring our Phoenix line and our ASI outside lines. Holiday Displays using any of our pots are also
desirable. But the most important factor is sheer beauty!
RECEIVE UP TO A $500 CREDIT FOR EACH SHOT USED (There is no limit to the amount of shots
we might use so you can potentially earn significantly more than $500!)
Any customer who submits a shot that is selected to be in the gallery will receive a credit against
future purchases. (If you buy through a distributor we will provide credit to you through your distributor.) Credit for selected shots will be as follows:
1-$500.00 for a shot used as a full-page on our printed gallery.
2-$250.00 for a shot used as less than full-page in our printed gallery.
3-$100.00 for a shot used in the on-line gallery but not included in the printed gallery.
We’re leaving the decision making for selection to our designers. Our only direction to them is
that the shots used are high quality and that the gallery showcases our products. The judges will
consider all submissions, no matter what the resolution, but without the proper resolution (see instructions below), many shots will not be usable in the printed version.
